At that price the Sens would be foolish to trade him.

I totally agree but other teams may come with pretty decent offers for that steal of a contract.

canuckfromtoronto 07-31-2008 09:58 AM

damn now the canucks are super ****ed if they dont sign Sundin, theyll be no one else

Whitesnake 07-31-2008 09:59 AM

Great signing for them. This has to be one of the best signing for a team during the offseason.

No joke, 2.75/year for a guy who will probably score you 30ish goals and 60ish points in each of those two years is a nice deal.

n0pan 07-31-2008 10:01 AM

I expected something more like $3.5M but damn!

Janne Niinimaa is still available i believe.

britdevil 07-31-2008 10:02 AM

Great deal for Ottawa. :handclap:

Karl Eriksson 07-31-2008 10:02 AM

He will be logging second line minutes for once, so in terms of value for money, yeah this contract is up there.

We did not get 'Fingered'

The reason why it took so long to sign him is that Murray was waiting to see if any other teams were willing to overpay for his rights. I'm sure there were offers, but none good enough to convince Ottawa to part with him.

Also, after the Hossa sign-and-trade fiasco I seriously doubt Ottawa would do it again.

BigCanadian 07-31-2008 10:05 AM

A great contract for the Sens. Cheaper than everyone thought it would be.

As for the Sign and Trade - I think it is always an option, but only for a really attractive piece, as Vermette's trade value just went way up with that steal of a contract! If Leclaire or JayBo or something similar becomes available and Vermette is moved as part of a package for them, then possibly, but for it pretty much rules out the players being offered so far from most teams.

Most Sens fans will be very happy to keep him, especially at that price, including myself.

ben3001 07-31-2008 10:15 AM

I don't think it is sign and trade. Vermette just agreed to a discount and you just don't trade the guy after. Ottawa would look like the most classless organisation out there after doing something like that.

Great deal by Murray and so stoked to see what he can do in the next 2 years :hyper:

champs83 07-31-2008 10:17 AM

cheaper than finger!

I agree. The Senators now have more reason not to trade him.

This should serve notice to people that just because people can be traded, doesn't mean they will.

The Chef* 07-31-2008 10:18 AM

I'd put this up there with the Kostitsyn signing as one of the best this offseason.

Pancakes Pancakes 07-31-2008 10:19 AM

I'm pretty sure Vermette agreed to take less because Murray told him he needed the room for Sundin. ;)
