From RedWingsCentral

why is detroit in the east and why 5 west teams and 3 east??

Forechecker 08-18-2008 09:00 AM

It's Detroit's tournament, and they get to invite the participants. I don't know what the criteria is for team selection.

NYR Viper 08-18-2008 10:39 AM

detroit is pretty far east

Matt 08-18-2008 11:47 AM

Columbus and Detroit are the only Western Division teams that are in the Eastern Time Zone

BrooklynRangersFan 08-18-2008 12:02 PM

Gawd, that seems like a long way off... sigh.

donpaulo 08-18-2008 09:04 PM

looks to be an exciting tourney... some of the teams participating have had some major changes with spots opened up for the younger players who play in tourneys like this one.

Unk 08-18-2008 09:20 PM

Anyone got a guessimation as to the team rosters (no line-ups required)? I'm guessing the Rangers are gonna have a hard time winning the tourney this time again with a depleted roster compared to last season. Go Rangers prospects!

squishy 08-18-2008 10:43 PM

Here's my take... which I expect will be supplemented by a few free agent tryouts as in the past.

Artem Anismov
Joe Barnes
Brodie Dupont
Evgeny Grachev
Ryan Hillier
Tom Pyatt
David Skokan
Justin Soryal
Derek Stepan
Dale Weise
Tomas Zaborsky
Jordan Owens
Mike Taylor

Michael Busto
Michael Del Zotto
Tomas Kundratek
Bobby Sanguinetti
David Urquhart

Miika Wiikman
Matt Zaba
Antoine Lafleur

squishy 08-18-2008 10:51 PM

Looking at it, I don't think this year's roster is all that much worse than last year. Here's last year's:

FORWARDS
Artem Anisimov, Yaroslav (RUS)
Ryan Baldwin, Windsor, (OHL)
Joe Barnes, Albany (AHL)
Alex Bourret, Chicago (AHL)
Brandon Dubinsky, Hartford (AHL)
Brodie Dupont, Calgary (WHL)
Ryan Hillier, Halifax (QMJHL)
Lauri Korpikoski, Hartford (AHL)
David Kveton, Gatineau (QMHL)
Jordan Owens, Mississauga (OHL)
Tom Pyatt, Saginaw (OHL)
David Skokan, Rimouski (QMJHL)
Tomas Zaborsky, Saginaw (OHL)

DEFENSEMEN
Clayton Barthel, Kelowna (WHL)
Lukas Bohunicky, Kootney (WHL)
Michael Busto, Kootenay (WHL)
Corey Potter, Charlotte (ECHL)
Bob Sanguinetti, Owen Sound (OHL)
Mike Sauer, Portland (WHL)
Marc Staal, Sudbury (OHL)

GOALTENDERS
Antoine Lafleur, Prince Edward Island (QMJHL)
Miika Wiikman, HPK Hameenlinna (FIN)

Defense is the only worry as far as I'm concerned.

Just wondering, why is there no Denisov? I'm guessing he's too old (24) but Urquhart is 23. I'm guessing 23 yrs in the cut-off? Is Korpikoski also possibly ineligible?

I don't know that there are hard and fast rules on eligibility. In the past, the Rangers haven't brought anyone who's completed two full pro seasons, as far as I can remember off the top of my head, which is why I left guys like Korpikoski and Byers and Ouellette off. I left Denisov (and Jamtin) off based on age and pro (European) experience. Urquhart may be 23, but he's a first year pro. I can see them leaving Wiikman off the roster as well, but I included him anyway.

NYR Viper 08-19-2008 12:08 AM

the defense is going to be a lot worse then last years tournaments.....

sanguinetti
staal
sauer
potter

thats a pretty solid top 4.....

sanguinetti
del zotto
kundratek
busto

better offensively, but defensively not even close to last years......

i expect anisimov and grachev to dominate this thing this year......big bodies with skill....

Unk 08-19-2008 12:38 AM

On the flip side though, goal tending as probably improved a little. Wiikman's got a solid year in the AHL down, though Lafleur is still suspect.

Wow, to think just one year ago, Dubinsky was lumped in with the rest of the prospects, and how many times we all saw the one highlight of his spectacular goal at last years tournament.

Forechecker 08-19-2008 01:30 PM

I'll be keeping an eye on Grachev and Weise. I think Weise is a dark-horse to make the Wolfpack this year.

yea but the rangers must sign him before he gets sent down. when was the last time the rangers drafted a player and went straight to the pros the following season either AHL or NHL??? i think Blackburn was the last one, Staal did go back to juniors after he was drafted, korpikoski could have came to NA since he was drafted from europe but both NYR and korpikoski decided on to stay in europe

Radek27 08-19-2008 03:31 PM

Didn't my boy Zabrosky own in this tourny last year? :yo:

C'mon Zabs! Show em what u got kid.

Weise is an overager (20 years old) and accordingly he's eligible for the AHL.

Most players are drafted at 18 or 19 and according to the CBA, it's the NHL or back to Juniors. They don't have the option of going to the AHL.

Weise is one of the players the Swift Current Broncos feel they will lose to the AHL. As noted above, he's an overager and eligible for the AHL.

as stated korpikoski was drafted from finland so he was allowed to come to the AHL. what if Korpikoski came to hartford as a 19 year old???

Forechecker 08-20-2008 09:48 AM

I must be psychic, from Keen's Korner:

Quote:

JK: As far as leadership goes, with the potential return of Dale Wiese... is the captain's "C" his to lose with the departure of Zack Smith to the pro ranks?

Chynoweth: That has to still play out again. Everybody keeps saying he's back or will be back more than likely... I still don't think that's the case.

I think he's in great shape and had a real strong Rangers development camp. Once he goes back and the Rangers see him I wouldn't be surprised if they try to make room or have to make room for him.

I would take him back obviously with open arms. I think he's made humongous strides from the day we got him to where he is today and that's very rewarding. To have him back would be great but we're in the business of developing players and if he moves on that's great for him.

It's still a different situation IMO. Wiese is a year older than Korpikoski was following his draft year. Korpikoski probably wasn't ready for the AHL from a physical standpoint. From what I've read about Wiese, he is ready for the AHL.

This is from a Prospect Park interview with Jon Keen, the announcer for the Swift Current Broncos (Wiese's junior team):

Quote:

PP: We saw that he was 6'2 and already has an NHL sized body, is it pretty muscular, is he a work out demon or what is he?

JK: Well I will not say he is a workout demon but he is in such (good) physical shape. He just kind of put on a lot of mass in the course of last season's off-season. He came to camp a little bigger and a little stronger. He just has such good technique and he comes at you with lots of speed.

You are familiar with Ryan Hollweg (Hollweg was a punisher during his WHL days); well he does not have the build of Hollweg but Wiese is a crasher like that but with more skill offensively.

PP: We believe Wiese will be coming back to Swift Current as an overager so what kind of team will we see next season rebuilding or contending?

JK: Well that is the thing, the Broncos don't expect Dale Wiese along with another 1988 born player that was drafted Zach Smith (a Senator's pick) who was the captain of the team last year to come back. The Broncos are fully expecting Dale to sign a contract and be in Hartford or somewhere with the Rangers for next season.

You know whenever you are a NHL team and you use a 4th round pick on a 19 year old like the Rangers did you usually have plans for him.

Forechecker 08-20-2008 11:15 AM

Jon Keen is also the author of Keen's Korner for those who can't connect the dots.

IIRC, he still had military obligations in Finland to fulfill before he could come over.
