Hours after Ottawa GM Bryan Murray held a news conference to announce the team was at a contractual impasse with restricted free agent defenseman Andrej Meszaros, The Hockey News has learned from a source close to the negotiations that Meszaros has agreed to a multi-year offer sheet with an average salary in excess of $5 million per season.

The team that has agreed to terms with the 22-year-old has yet to be confirmed.

When contacted by The Hockey News, Murray wouldn't confirm the report.

"Iíve heard rumors that thatís happening, but thereís no confirmation of that at this point," said Murray.
I wonder who the team is.

Someone on the Ottawa board said Tampa, but i'm not sure.

Macke* 08-28-2008 04:51 PM

Vancouver.

Bold Moves.

Mue 08-28-2008 04:52 PM

I'm going to trust the poster on the Sens board and assume it is TB.

Why would Vancouver send out an offer sheet to Meszaros? Unless they have a deal in place to trade a defenseman for a forward..

Kid_Roll 08-28-2008 04:54 PM

Tampa is doing all the bold moves Gillis said HE'D make! The dirty ********.

If true, what does $5 million of RFA compensation goodness land you nowadays?

Flyersguru 08-28-2008 04:55 PM

Homer strikes again :D

The Fuhr* 08-28-2008 04:55 PM

$3,923,437 - $5,231,249
1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

$5,231,249 - $6,539,062
Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick

I Eat Crow 08-28-2008 04:55 PM

I bet it's LA

EkLOLund 08-28-2008 04:56 PM

$3,923,434 - $5,231,246 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

I'd guess 5 years 26 million

LA has no reason to give up a 1st a 2nd and a 3rd when they can just trade a 4th or Schneider.

ManInTheBox 08-28-2008 04:57 PM

Anyone want to comment on the chances the Sens can match this..?

It depends on the team and how much the compensation is.

Two firsts a second and a third. I probably would not match.

A first a second and a third, I would.

Nikita Filatov* 08-28-2008 04:58 PM

I hope it's not Boston.

0-2%

If Murray wasn't budging over 3.5

5+ is not even close.

Well when you consider they had a press conference saying they would not pay him $4.5 million earlier today why would they all of the sudden be willing to pay $5 million?

We do not have 2nd so Flyers are not in this one.

oiler-dude 08-28-2008 05:00 PM

So will this GM get the same wrath Lowe did? Not exactly market value for Meszaros...

Schneider is Ducks property ;)

Come to think of it, Mezsaros is not a d-man I'd throw a 5 million+ offer sheet at during a rebuild. Tampa makes a lot of sense as some have said.

btn 08-28-2008 05:01 PM

Please not Atlanta

britdevil 08-28-2008 05:01 PM

Who is desperate for a top-4 puck mover?

Boston, Columbus, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, St. Louis, LA?
