CALGARY - Jaromir Jagr could very well be the world's best-paid headhunter.
Earlier this week, the former National Hockey League star, who's getting paid $25 million worth of rubles to play for Avangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League (known as the KHL) for the next two seasons, was making a recruiting phone call to Wayne Fleming. A very wary Wayne Fleming, as it turns out.
"I kind of said, 'Yeah, sure,' " admitted Fleming, "but then he started talking a little bit longer (and he realized the call was legit). I'm not sure how he got my name or number, I don't know how that happened."
Jagr laid it out for Fleming - after just six games, Omsk had fired its head coach and would Fleming be willing to jump on a plane and come to the Siberian city to take over? By Thursday, Fleming had submitted his resignation as Flames assistant and was getting his visa papers in order.
