Question: What happens if a player is waived?

Let's say hypothetically, that Fahey and/or Potter play well enough to displace a higher paid player, like Kalinin or Rosvial.

If the Rangers waive one of those players do we still have them under the cap?

Is there a penalty to waive a player like that?

If they clear waivers then there is no cap charge but I think we would still pay the contract. If they are claimed then I think we are charged with half of their salary (and the claiming team is charged with the other half). Not 100% on that second point though...

It depends on their contract. If Roszival was waived... every team in the league would have a chance to pick him up. If nobody claimed him off waivers, he would get sent down to the minors where he would make $5m to play for Hartford. He has a one-way contract. If it was a 2-way contract, then he would have to collect AHL-level money.

I'm pretty sure, NYReign, the teams would still have to pay his cap hit if he was in the AHL. And yes, if he is cleared off waivers they only have to pay a portion of his salary (not sure what portion). So the claiming team takes on his full cap hit, but only part of his salary. Nice loophole for teams to meet the salary cap floor but still save $$

yea but seriously folks...........they signed Mara, Kalinen, Rissmiller as FA.......which means they scouted them and which means they will not just be dumped before getting a chance to play in a REAL game

If a player is waived and cleared, then his salary won't count against the cap (but he would still get paid his full salary, he would be making 5 million to play in the AHL). There is an exception to this rule, if they were over 35 and signed a multi-year contract then their salary would still count against the cap.

If a player is claimed on waivers, then the claiming team is responsible for the rest of their contract. However if a player clears waivers, is sent down to the minors, but then recalled, he is subject to re-entry waivers where if a team claims him they are only responsible for half the salary. The Rangers would be responsible for the other half and it would count against their cap. ie if Roszival is sent down, clears, but is then recalled and say Columbus claims him, half his cap hit (2.5) would count against the Rangers for the rest of his contract and half would count against the claiming team.

if a player gets picked up on waivers, the claiming team would pay the FULL contract. the rangers would be off the hook.

Re-read EasyMac's post. There would have been no cap charge to the Rangers of Pock cleared waivers. There is no difference in the Rangers cap charge, all him getting claimed means is that Jimmy D doesn't have to fork over the cash to pay him.
