ARLINGTON, Va. –Washington Capitals fans can listen to all seven preseason games this year on WashingtonCaps.com, and fans in the D.C. market can watch the three preseason home games live online. The Capitals will take the ice for their first preseason game at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 against the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Washington’s final four preseason games will also be available on WFED 1500 AM and WWFD 820 AM, starting with the Sept. 29 road tilt against the New Jersey Devils. Steve Kolbe, the radio voice of the Capitals for the past 11 years, and WashingtonCaps.com senior writer Mike Vogel will call the road preseason action. The Philadelphia Flyers will play one last final game in their former home, the Wachovia Spectrum, when they meet their American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, on Tuesday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come early and celebrate the Spectrum at a free block party featuring live entertainment, interactive games and more beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The game will be preceded by a special on-ice ceremony featuring a memorable hoisting of the Stanley Cup banner by 21 members of the Flyers Stanley Cup winning teams (1973-74 and 1974-75). The jerseys worn by the Stanley Cup champions during the pre-game ceremony will be autographed and auctioned off during the game.
“There’s no one else we’d rather ‘Celebrate the Spectrum’ with than our fans,” said Flyers Senior Vice President of Business Operations Shawn Tilger. “We want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to see the Flyers in the Spectrum one last time and that their experience is as memorable as possible.”
And the first cuts happened yesterday. The Flyers sent a bunch of guys to the Phantoms, their AHL affiliate, and took 32 players on the road to Ottawa yesterday afternoon. Of the young players who made enough of an impression to get another NHL look, few have a realistic chance of cracking the Flyers' deep roster, but all have made an impression, including forwards Jon Kalinski, Andreas Nodl, Matthew Clackson and defenseman Luca Sbisa.
"We're down to 32, with three goalies," coach John Stevens said yesterday. "That's how many we're going to take on the road for these next couple of games [tonight in Ottawa, tomorrow in London, Ontario, against the Islanders]. "It's a good opportunity to get another look at some of these young players and get some of the veteran guys in that haven't played yet and still continue to cover things as a group.

The Flyers announced that they have returned forward Zac Rinaldo, defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon and goaltender Jacob DeSerres to their respective Canadian Hockey League teams, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
Rinaldo, the Flyers’ sixth round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, was returned to the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey League. Bourdon, a Flyers’ third round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, was returned to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. DeSerres, a Flyers’ third round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, was returned to the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have returned defenseman Kevin Marshall to the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Marshall, 19, did not appear in any of the Flyers’ first three preseason games this season. He was drafted by the Flyers in the second round (41st overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have assigned 13 players to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. Among those reassigned were defensemen Oskars Bartulis, Tim Ramholt and Mike Ratchuk; forwards Rob Bellamy, Frederik Cabana, Matt Clackson, Garrett Klotz, David Laliberte, Ned Lukacevic, Patrick Maroon, Jon Matsumoto and Nate Raduns; and goaltender Jeremy Duchesne. Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki, currently out with an injured hip, skated for 30 minutes today (September 30) at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone and said he thinks he is ahead of schedule to return. Niittymaki had surgery on September 12th on his left hip to drain fluid and clean up some loose bodies that were in his joint. “I feel good. I wouldn’t say 100 percent, but pretty close,” he said. “We’re definitely ahead of [schedule] right now. It’s only been a little over two weeks and they said four-to-six, so that’s a good thing.”

The Flyers have a few guys banged up with hip flexor injuries, but none is serious enough to be considered a threat to the season opener Oct. 11.
Defensemen Randy Jones and Steve Eminger and left wing Scottie Upshall are all dealing with inflammation in the hip area. Jones has played in one of the five preseason games, but expects to be back on the ice tonight against Washington.
Last regular season, the teams met four times. The Flyers won November 2 (3-2) and January 13 (6-4) at Washington. The Capitals won November 23 (4-3, SO) and February 6 (4-3) in Philadelphia. The Flyers were 2-1-0-1 while Washington was 2-2-0-0.
The Flyers all-time regular season record is: W 92 -- L 61 -- T 19 -- OTL 3. At home, the Flyers are 55-27-6-1 and away they are 37-34-13-2.
In 23 PO games, the Flyers are 11-12 including 6-4 at home and 5-8 away. The Caps won series in 1984 (3-0) and 1988 (4-3) while the Flyers won in 1989 (4-2) and 2008 (4-3).
The Flyers were undefeated in the 20 games (16-0-4) these teams played in the 1970s. The streak reached 25 (19-0-6) as it carried into the 1980s.
November 9, 1974 -- In the first ever meeting between the franchises, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber and Tom Bladon each had three points in the Flyers' 6-2 home win. Orest Kindrachuk scored the third goal via a penalty shot. The first goal scored in this series was by Washington's Bill Mikkelson who scored just four goals in his NHL career.
December 26, 1974 -- The teams met at Washington for the first time. Bobby Clarke scored twice and led the Flyers to a 4-1 win.
January 16, 1975 -- Bernie Parent had the shutout and the Flyers scored three third period goals in a 4-0 home win. Philly outshot Washington 11-1 in the third and 40-20 in the game.
March 18, 1975 -- Rick MacLeish (3-2-5) led the Flyers to a 7-2 victory at Washington. Bobby Clarke recorded his 100th point of the season.
June 4, 1975 -- Bill Clement was among a package sent to Washington for the first overall pick, used to select Mel Bridgman.
October 9, 1975 -- In the season opener, Reggie Leach scored the tie-breaker with 1:59 to play in the Flyers' 5-4 win. Michel Belhumeur made 45 saves for Washington. The Caps scored twice in the last five minutes of the third period to rally from a 4-2 deficit. Mel Bridgman, the NHL's number one pick in the 1975 Draft, scored in his first game and gave the Flyers a 4-2 lead.
December 19, 1975 -- Rick MacLeish (3-0-3), Bobby Clarke (1-3-4) and Bill Barber (2-2-4) led the Flyers to a 7-5 victory. The game was knotted at 5-5 after two periods. The Flyers outshot Washington 53-22 including 20-3 in the first period. Philly outshot the Caps 50-28.
February 24, 1976 -- Washington (six losses in six games) earned the first point in franchise history against the Flyers in a 5-5 tie. Bernie Parent played his first game of the season after he returned from neck surgery (October 14) and the rust showed; he made just 14 saves on 19 shots. The Capitals led 3-0 past the midway point of the game but the Flyers scored the next four to take a 4-3 lead in the third period. The Caps then scored twice in just over three minutes to regain the lead, 5-4. Tom Bladon's goal tied the game at 5-5 with 5:23 remaining. The Flyers held a 41-19 shots advantage including 33-12 over the last 40 minutes.
April 1, 1976 -- The Flyers clobbered the Capitals 11-2 in the Spectrum as Reggie Leach (2-3-5) became the second player (Phil Esposito) in NHL history to score 60 goals in any regular season. Bobby Clarke (0-5-5), Bill Barber (3-1-4, 11 shots) and Orest Kindrachuk (2-2-4) had impressive games. Philly led 4-0 less than nine minutes in to the contest. The Flyers outshot Washington 62-23 (44-11 after two); the shot total remains a team record. Ron Low gave up all 11 goals and made 51 saves; he stopped 24 of 25 shots in the second period. Philly scored five times in both the first and third periods. One of the goals was by Larry Wright who scored his first NHL goal in his 40th game; it was also his final game with the Flyers. The Caps scored with six seconds left in the game.
February 10, 1977 -- Bill Barber (1-4-5) and Rick MacLeish (2-1-3) led the Flyers' dominance in a 9-2 win. Shots were 46-18. In Ron Low's five starts for Washington against the Flyers, the goalie went 0-5-0 and surrendered 34 goals, including 26 in his last three outings.
November 3, 1977 -- The Flyers had a 17-1 shots advantage in the second period of a 4-1 victory.
February 12, 1978 -- Washington had just seven shots (2-2-3) on goal, still an all-time low for any team against the Flyers. The Flyers won 4-1 and out-shot Washington 30-7.
February 26, 1978 -- The Flyers dominated the first period by taking a 4-1 lead on a 21-7 shot advantage after 20 minutes and skated to a 6-1 win at Washington.
December 21, 1978 -- The Flyers got a pair of goals from Yves Preston (2-1-3) and Rick MacLeish (2-0-2) in a 5-2 home win. There were three fights in the game including Mel Bridgman defeating Bill Riley who earlier fought Rick Lapointe.
January 9, 1979 -- Wayne Stephenson made 41 saves and Reggie Leach (2 goals), Bobby Clarke and Bob Dailey each had three points in the Flyers' 5-2 win. The Capitals' Guy Charron (2 points) had 13 shots on goal, the Caps outshout the Flyers 43-22.
March 29, 1979 -- Down 4-3 in the third period, Jimmy Watson scored a SHG with nine minutes to play, Bill Barber scored the go-ahead goal two minutes later and the Flyers added two more goals in a 7-4 win.

April 3, 1980 -- Reggie Leach scored his 48th, 49th and 50th goals of the season and Bobby Clarke had four assists in the Flyers' 4-2 home win. Down 2-0 after one period, the Flyers scored twice in the late portion of the second period and then Leach sealed the victory at 5:08 into the third before adding his 50th on an ENG.
August 21, 1980 -- Bob "Hound" Kelly was dealt to Washington.
December 20, 1980 -- The Flyers dominated the last two periods of a 5-2 road win. The Flyers outshot Washington 32-10 and out-scored the Caps 5-0 combined in periods two and three. Washington led 2-0 after one period, including a goal by Bob Kelly. Reggie Leach and Tim Kerr scored PPGs 28 seconds apart -- on different penalties -- to give Philly a 3-2 lead.
December 21, 1980 -- It took 26 (19-0-6 pre-game record) tries but Washington finally recorded a victory in this series as Mike Palmateer made 44 stops in a 6-0 win in Philadelphia. There were 17 fighting majors, multiple misconducts and 344 PIMs. The first clash erupted just 19 seconds into the contest between Jim McTaggart and Ken Linseman. Archie Henderson (who played just seven games in his Caps' career) and Behn Wilson dueled twice in the first period. Former Flyer Bob Kelly and Linseman also fought.
November 21, 1981 -- Washington blasted Philadelphia 10-4 and the Caps had their first ever home win in this series. The Flyers were 9-0-6 in the first 15 games at Washington. Rick St. Croix was in net for every goal. Washington led 8-1 less than halfway through the affair. The next night, Washington won again as rookie sensation Chris Valentine snapped a 2-2 tie in a 3-2 victory.
March 7, 1982 -- Rick St. Croix made 44 saves and Philly scored four first period goals in a 7-1 thrashing. Both teams recorded 45 shots.
March 27, 1982 -- Bobby Clarke rallied the Flyers to a 4-4 tie at Washington. The Caps had a 4-1 lead in the final period but after Al Hill made it 4-2, Clarke scored the first of his consecutive goals 17 seconds later and then on the PP with 6:05 to play. The second period was littered with fights and four players (Ray Allison, Bob Hoffmeyer and Glen Cochrane of the Flyers and the Caps' Torrie Robertson and Randy Holt were ejected). Holt had 34 PIMs in the game. Lee Norwood had four points for Washington.
October 9-10, 1982 -- The Flyers beat the Caps twice in consecutive days. Darryl Sittler had three goals in the two games.
December 26, 1982 -- The Flyers scored three third period goals in a 6-3 road win. Mark Howe's second goal of the game came on the PK just 26 seconds into the final period. January 18, 1983 -- Washington's 4-1 win was the only loss by the Flyers in a 22-game span from 12/22/82-through-2/10/83.
December 15, 1983 -- For the first time in a regular season game, the Flyers scored three SHGs, including two in 21 seconds, in a second period explosion that saw the Flyers score six times. Entering the 2007-08 season, this is also the only time the Flyers had three shorties in one period. Darryl Sittler had four assists to lead the Flyers in their 9-4 assault of the Capitals.
December 26, 1983 -- The Flyers overcame a late 4-3 deficit when Tim Kerr and Ilkka Sinisalo scored within 44 seconds of each other in a 5-4 win. Sinisalo scored on a breakaway with 4:36 to play. Washington trailed 3-1 after one but went ahead 4-3 with 8:22 remaining on a Bobby Gould goal.
January 8, 1984 -- Bengt Gustafsson had a remarkable outing scoring five goals off Pelle Lindbergh in the Capitals' 7-1 victory.
April 1, 1984 -- In the season finale to determine home ice advantage for the upcoming series, Washington beat the Flyers 4-1.
April 4, 1984 -- In Game 1 of the Patrick Division Semis, the Capitals scored twice in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and won 4-2. The Flyers dressed eight rookies.
April 5, 1984 -- In Game 2, Washington got four third period goals to break open a 2-2 tie and won 6-2. Bobby Clarke scored his final NHL goal to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
April 7, 1984 -- In Game 3, Washington swept the Flyers (3-0) with a 5-1 victory in Philadelphia. Al Jensen stopped 37 shots. Pelle Lindbergh played goal, replacing Bob Froese who started Games 1 and 2. It was Bobby Clarke's final game as a player. Bill Barber underwent what would be career-ending surgery to correct a knee injury suffered prior to the series during a workout; Barber was diagnosed with a severe fractured femur. Bob McCammon and the Flyers agreed on a mutual- resigned from the Coach-GM after this series.
December 23, 1984 -- Tim Kerr tallied three goals in the Flyers' 7-4 home win.
February 9, 1985 -- Tim Kerr had four goals, including a natural hat trick, and Brian Propp scored with two seconds left to give Philadelphia an important 5-4 win. The momentum-shifting victory propelled the Flyers to a 24-4-0 record in the season's final 28 games. Entering this game, the Flyers were 11 points behind Washington for the Division crown and 19 behind Edmonton for the NHL's top record. The Flyers eventually surpassed both teams for the League's best mark.
March 7, 1985 -- Tim Kerr (3-1-4 in the game and 7-1-8 in his last two against the Caps) and Dave Poulin (3-0-3) each recorded hat tricks and Ilkka Sinisalo (2-1-3) added consecutive goals to start the third period in the Flyers' 9-6 home victory. The Flyers led 2-0 but soon trailed 4-2. Kerr's 50th goal of the season, followed by Poulin's pair within a 32-second span of period two and Sinisalo's pair to open the third period upped the lead to 7-4. After the Caps scored twice, Kerr (51st goal) and Rick Tocchet finished the scoring.

January 9, 1986 -- Darren Jensen recorded his first NHL shutout by making 24 stops in Philadelphia's 4-0 win. Darren Jensen and Al Jensen were the goalies. The Flyers outshot the Caps 35-24.
March 13, 1986 -- Bob Froese made 19 saves as he shut out the Capitals 2-0 in Philadelphia. Ilkka Sinisalo scored in the early moments of the first period and it was the game's lone score until Dave Poulin added an ENG with 12 seconds to play.
March 23, 1986 -- Bobby Gould's goal in the early third period gave Washington a 6-5 home win. Pelle Eklund became the first Flyers' rookie to reach 50 assists in a season. This was the rare NHL game in which four goalies surrendered goals. Tim Kerr scored his 51st and 52nd goals of the season.
April 6, 1986 -- In a record-setting performance, and with the Patrick Division title on the line, the Flyers recovered from a 2-0 hole and won 5-3 at home. Philly entered the game with a 108-107 point lead over the Caps. The Flyers tied a team record with their 53rd regular season win while Tim Kerr scored his NHL-record 34th PPG of the season. Brian Propp scored a hat trick and Kerr scored twice. Propp's second goal was on a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway with PK'er partner Dave Poulin that gave Philly a 3- lead. Down by two goals, Washington pulled goalie Pete Peeters with 3:13 to play in regulation and narrowed the score to 4-3. Propp's third goal, his 40th of the season, came with 1:15 to play and gave Philly a 5-3 lead. Washington's 107 points were third best and 15 better than fourth place Quebec in the overall standings.
December 26, 1987 -- Ilkka Sinisalo's goal with just over two minutes to play capped a three-goal rally in the Flyers' 3-2 win at Washington. It was the Flyers' seventh straight win and 14th in a row (12-0-2) without a loss.
January 31, 1988 -- The Caps' Kelly Miller snapped a scoreless tie in OT. Mike Gartner had 10 of his team's 28 shots on goal.
March 10, 1988 -- Tim Kerr played for the first time all season after his fifth shoulder operation (last played in the 1987 POs). Willie Huber had three assists and Brian Propp scored twice in the Flyers' 5-2 win.
March 25, 1988 -- Washington registered 52 shots on goal, including 24 in the first period, in a 5-3 victory. The Caps led 2-0 after one, trailed 3-2 after two and won with three goals in the last period with Grant Ledyard scoring the GWG. Mark Laforest (47 saves) played goal for the Flyers. Forwards Rick Tocchet (seven games including Games 1 and 2 of the POs) and Peter Zezel (three games) each suffered shoulder injuries that put them out of action.
April 3, 1988 -- Washington's Garry Galley scored two third goals in a span of 3:09 in a 2-2 tie. The Flyers needed a win in order to get home ice advantage in the upcoming first round series against the Capitals. The Caps dominated the last period, out-shooting the Flyers 20-4. Galley's second goal was a 45-foot slapper as he came off the bench for a line change. The Caps finished the season with a 1-5-3 mark while the Flyers spuutered, too, at 4-11-2. Flyers' star Tim Kerr was injured in the contest prohibiting him from playing in the 1988 PO opener.

April 7, 1988 -- In Game 2, Washington held on for a 5-4 win as Pete Peeters made 31 saves for the Caps.
April 9, 1988 -- In Game 3, Kjell Samuelsson scored in the late second period to give the Flyers the lead for good at 4-3. Philadelphia limited the Caps to 17 shots.
April 10, 1988 -- In Game 4, in one of the most thrilling comebacks in franchise history, the Flyers recovered from a 4-1 deficit with less than ten minutes left in regulation and won 5-4 in OT. Kjell Samuelsson knotted the scored in the final minute of the third then Murray Craven's exhilarating OT goal gave the Flyers a 3-1 series lead. Rick Tocchet assisted on three of the four late goals. The Caps switched starting goalies from Pete Peeters to Clint Malarchuk for the first time in the series. Ron Hextall was yanked after giving up Washington's fourth goal three minutes into the final period and was replaced by Mark Laforest. April 12, 1988 -- In Game 5, Washington returned home and skated to a 5-2 victory.
April 14, 1988 -- In Game 6, Washington scored four PPGs in a 7-2 victory.
April 16, 1988 -- In Game 7, in most of the most disheartening losses in Flyers' history, Dale Hunter scored in OT to eliminate the Flyers in what would be Mike Keenan's final game as Philadelphia's head coach. Philly led 3-0 in the second period but were tied 3-3 as the third period began. There, the Caps took a 4-3 lead before Brad Marsh tied the game 1:02 later. Washington had 40 shots.
December 27, 1988 -- Mike Ridley's second goal of the game in third period goal snapped a 3-3 tie and the Capitals prevailed 4-3. The Flyers scored three times in 86 seconds late in the first period. The teams combined for five goals in a 7:05 stretch in the first period. Ron Hextall made 39 saves.
January 27, 1989 -- Clint Malarchuk's 100th victory was one of excellence as he stopped all 42 shots and Geoff Courtnall scored the game's only goal in the Caps' 1-0 win in Philly. Ron Hextall made 30 saves.
February 5, 1989 -- Kevin Hatcher suffered two broken metatarsal bones in left foot, on a Mike Bullard slapper, and only learned of the break when he removed his skate post-game. He was out of the Caps' lineup for about six weeks. The Flyers won 3-1 at Washington despite just two third period shots (one goal) and being outshot 31-21. Ron Hextall made 30 saves.
March 24, 1989 -- Ron Hextall received a high sticking major and a game misconduct midway into the Caps' 6-1 victory.
March 30, 1989 -- The Flyers won 5-4 at home in a game that featured 26 roughing penalties and four points by Tim Kerr (2-2-4).
April 5, 1989 -- In Game 1 of the Patrick Division Semis, the Flyers blew an early 2-0 lead in a 3-2 defeat as Lou Franceschetti got the GWG in the second period. Ron Hextall made 33 saves (17-for-17 in the final period). Murray Craven suffered a broken right wrist and missed the rest of the 1989 playoffs.
April 6, 1989 -- In Game 2, with Dale Hunter off for slashing, Brian Propp netted the second of his consecutive PPGs with 51 seconds left to lift the Flyers to a 3-2 win. Propp tied the game at 11:25 about four minutes after Keith Acton scored to cut Washington's lead in half. The Caps led 1-0 after a second period goal and led 2-0 with an early third period goal.
April 8, 1989 -- In Game 3, Washington claimed a 4-3 OT decision. The Flyers and Caps alternated goals in each period until Kelly Miller netted the OT GWG. Ron Hextall was sensational making 40 stops.
April 9, 1989 -- In Game 4, the Flyers broke open a scoreless game with four second period goals and recorded a 5-2 win; Philly led 5-0 midway through the third period. Tim Kerr's PPG with Dale Hunter in the penalty box started the rally. The Flyers, who were called for four consecutive minors in the opening 10 minutes of the third period, PK killed eight of nine shorthanded situations in the game. Washington outshot the Flyers 15-3 in the last period but Ron Hextall (30 saves) earned top star honors with his brilliant performance.
April 11, 1989 -- In Game 5, Ron Hextall became the first goalie to shoot the puck in the opposing team's net during a PO game and the Flyers rallied for an 8-5 triumph. The Flyers trailed 5-4 with about 12 minutes to play but after Brian Propp tied the game, Pelle Eklund scored the GWG on the PP with about six minutes to play. Tim Kerr had four (2-2-4) points. Rick Tocchet's goal with 3:19 remaining broke a 3-3 tie and the Flyers won 4-3 in Game 6. Tocchet (2-1-3) also scored to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead in the third period. Ron Hextall was sensational yet again making 31 saves including 16 of 17 shots in the opening period. Tim Kerr finished with 10 points in the series.
December 1, 1989 -- Mike Bullard scored with 33 seconds to play in the Flyers 3-2 road win. Washington's Bob Mason faced just 17 shots.
December 19, 1989 -- Kevin Miller scored with 3:30 to play in the third period of Washington's 2-1 win in the Spectrum. There were brawls throughout the game including Miller and Kjell Samuelsson who were ejected in the final two minutes.
1990-1994:
January 28, 1990 -- Geoff Courtnall had a hat trick in Washington's 7-2 home win.
December 11, 1990 -- The Flyers set an all-time franchise low for shots in a game with 13; Washington had 16 shots and the total of 29 was (and is) the lowest by two teams in any Flyers' regular season game.
January 24, 1991 -- Rick Tocchet scored three goals as the Flyers leveled the Caps 6-1.
February 10, 1991 -- A game highlighted by 20 fighting majors and multiple misconducts. Dale Hunter elbowed the Flyers' Gord Murphy into the glass, eventually resulting in a 4-game suspension to Hunter and leading to mayhem in this contest. December 5, 1991 -- Down two men in the first two-plus minutes, the Flyers' Terry Carkner scored a SHG; however, the Caps scored 18 seconds later en route to a 6-3 win. This was the Flyers' first game under new head coach Bill Dineen who replaced Paul Holmgren.
December 22, 1991 -- Brad Jones scored 1:10 into OT to give Philly a 4-3 win at home. The Flyers were 1-11-2 in their prior 14 games against the Capitals.
March 20, 1992 -- Mark Recchi snapped a 6-6 tie with 44 seconds to play, his fourth point of the day (2-2-4), leading the Flyers to a 7-6 win. Washington led 6-3 as the third period began but the Flyers tallied four third period goals.
December 26, 1992 -- Eric Lindros completed a hat trick in remarkable style via a penalty shot with 19 seconds remaining in regulation; the game finished in a 5-5 tie in Landover. After a scoreless first period, the Flyers scored four times off Jim Hrivnak in a 5:21 span in the second period to take a 4-0 lead. Don Beaupre stopped 10 of 11 shots in relief. The Caps scored four goals in the third period in a span of 9:07 to take a 5-4 lead and scored three PPGs.
January 7, 1993 -- Kevin Dineen registered a hat trick as the Flyers trounced Washington 8-2.

January 13, 1999 -- JVB stopped all 25 Washington shots in a 3-0 road win. Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Eric Desjardins combined for seven points.
October 12, 1999 -- Peter Bondra scored twice within a minute late in the third period when the Caps were down 4-3 and Washington claimed a 5-4 win. Simon Gagne scored twice within the first five minutes of the game. Mark Recchi assisted on all four goals.
2000-2004:
January 30, 2000 -- Olaf Kolzig made 30 saves in a 2-0 shutout at Washington. The Flyers trailed 2-0 after two periods despite a 21-7 shots edge.
November 18, 2000 --Simon Gagne (2-1-3) and Justin Williams (2-1-3) each scored twice in the Flyers' 5-3 win. Washington's Steve Konowalchuk had a hat trick. Keith Primeau had three points (1-2-3) and Brian Boucher made 35 saves.
October 20, 2001 -- Mark Recchi (3-1-4), John LeClair (2-1-3) and Jeremy Roenick (0-3-3) led the Flyers to a 6-3 win. The Flyers outshot Washington 20-4 in the first period.
October 30, 2001 -- Brian Boucher made 32 saves and shutout the Capitals 3-0 at Washington.
November 15, 2001 -- Brian Boucher and Roman Cechmanek combined (24 saves) to shutout the Caps 5-0 in Philadelphia.
December 26, 2001 -- The Flyers blitzed Washington 4-1. Stephen Peat tallied with under five minutes to go in the game giving the Caps their first goal against the Flyers in over 183 minutes of play.
March 19, 2002 -- Adam Oates was acquired by the Flyers for goalie prospect Maxine Ouellet and three picks in the 2002 draft.
October 19, 2002 -- Robert Esche made a strong debut for his new team in Philly's 3-1 Saturday afternoon home victory. Esche made 23 saves and Michal Handzus, the player acquired with him in a trade with Phoenix, was a perfect 10-for-10 on faceoffs. The Flyers trailed 1-0 35 minutes into the game but then scored twice in 99 seconds to take a 2-1 lead.
November 2, 2002 -- The Flyers outshot Washington 45-11 in a 2-1 win. Sebastien Charpentier made 43 saves for the Capitals. It was the fifth straight game (part of a six game win streak) the Flyers held the Caps to one goal or less' additionally, the Flyers held a 23-6 goals advantage during this 6-game win streak.
March 10, 2003 -- Peter Bondra scored in OT to give the Caps a 2-1 home win. Washington dominated the third period and OT by out-shooting Philly 17-3 and scoring two PPGs. Bondra's GWG came with Kim Johnsson serving a minor. Robert Esche made 28 saves.
November 6, 2003 -- The Flyers handled Washington 4-2 in Philadelphia. The Flyers led 3-0 after two periods and 27-11 in shots.
January 25, 2004 -- Mark Recchi (1-3-4) and John LeClair (1-3-4) led Philly to a 4-1 road win in which they outshot Washington 22-13 including 9-2 in the third period.
February 4, 2004 -- Mark Recchi had three points and the Flyers blitzed Washington 5-1 with a 41-20 shot advantage. Antero Niittymaki made his NHL debut.
November 3, 2005 -- The Flyers scored the last eight goals in an 8-1 home victory. Jon Sim, Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne each scored two goals, defensemen Mike Rathje and Joni Pitkanen each had three assists and forwards Peter Forsberg and Mike Knuble each (1-2-3) had three points.
December 31, 2005 -- Brian Willsie scored on the final shootout attempt (2-1) in Washington's 4-3 win.
February 10, 2006 -- Robert Esche made 39 saves and Brian Savage scored twice on the PP in a 5-2 win for the injury-depleted Flyers who were missing six regulars. The teams combined for 19 PPs and each squad scored three PPGs. The Caps had a two-man advantage, down by a goal 3-2, for 98 seconds but couldn't solve Esche.
November 23, 2007 -- Niklas Backstrom celebrated his 20th birthday with an OT goal and Washington won 4-3 in Philly the day after Thanksgiving. Washington led 3-0 but the Flyers rallied with two late second period goals and a Mike Richards goal with under five left in the third period. Bruce Boudreau made his head coaching debut for the Caps.
February 6, 2008 -- Ron Hextall inducted into the Flyers' Hall Of Fame prior to the game.
April 11, 2008 -- In Game 1 in DC, Washington rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three third period goals in a 5-4 win. Mike Green scored twice in the early third period to even the game and then Alex Ovechkin scored with 4:32 to play for the GWG. Danny Briere and Vinnie Prospal (2-1-3) led the Flyers.
April 13, 2008 -- In Game 2 in DC, Martin Biron stopped 24 shots and R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter scored first period goals in the Flyers 2-0 victory. Biron recorded his third shutout in his last four starts. The Flyers dominated the play by outshooting Washington 41-24.
April 15, 2008 -- In Game 3 in Philly, the Flyers defeated the Capitals 6-3. The game was scoreless 16+ minutes in but the teams combined for four goals in the next 2:33 and the Flyers held a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Danny Briere gave the Flyers leads of 1-0 and 4-2, his second goal coming with 10 seconds left in the second period and on the PP. Scott Hartnell and Sami Kapanen scored 17 seconds apart in the first period and Mike Richards electrified the home crowd with a penalty shot goal at 17:01 of the third period to give the Flyers a 5-3 lead. Briere (2-1-3) and Vinnie Prospal (0-3-3) each had three points. THOR!!! Incredibly, Patrick Thoresen returned to the lineup after being hit in the groin with a puck during Game 1. Derian Hatcher returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a broken leg on March 17.
April 17, 2008 -- In Game 4 in Philly, Mike Knuble's goal in double OT gave the Flyers a 4-3 victory. Afterwards, Knuble said "It's an unbelievable feeling to score in this town and hear the building go nuts. You pinch yourself. You can't believe it's happening." Jeff Carter scored the first and last goals in the opening period as the teams went to the locker rooms tied 2-2 after 20 minutes. Steve Eminger gave Washington a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes but Danny Briere scored midway through the third period to send the game to OT. Philly outshot Washington 46-41, including 18-12 in the OTs. Carter had three points (2-1-3), was a +3 and registered eight shots on goal.
April 19, 2008 -- In Game 5 in DC, the Caps scored two PPGs in a 3-2 win. The Flyers had a 21-6 third period shots advantage and 32-26 in the game.
April 21, 2008 -- In Game 6 in Philly, Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the third period which completed the Caps' 4-2 comeback win. The Flyers led 2-0 about midway through the game but Washington scored twice in the second and tied the game when Alexander Semin tallied with 1:57 left in the middle period. Washington held a 40-35 shots advantage including 12-8 in the third period.
April 22, 2008 -- In Game 7 in DC, Joffrey Lupul scored a PPG 6:06 into OT and the Flyers advanced with a thrilling and rare Game 7 overtime road win. There were nine seconds remaining on the PP when Lupul recorded his goal. The Flyers had the extra skater when Tom Poti was penalized for tripping. Martin Biron made 39 saves in the win and stifled any doubts about playing on consecutive nights; the teams played Games 6 and 7 on back-to-back nights for just the 8th time in NHL history. Scottie Upshall, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn were other strong performers. The Caps held a 41-34 shots advantage and a decisive 16-5 edge in the third period. The Flyers held a 7-2 shots advantage in the OT. It was the 30th Game 7 to go to OT in NHL history. The game was tied 1-1 after one period and 2-2 after two periods. Steve Downie made his NHL PO debut. Danny Briere had 11 points (6-5-11) in the seven games, marking the 12th that a Flyers' player had amassed 10+ points in a PO series. The road team has won about 36% of Game 7's since the NHL adopted the format; it was the 30th Game 7 to go to overtime.
June 20, 2008 -- Steve Eminger was traded to Philadelphia with Washington's 3rd round choice (Jacob Deserres) in 2008 Entry Draft for Philadelphia's 1st round choice (John Carlson) in 2008 Entry Draft.

Fabulous as always, MSE. I loved the pictures of our playoff series--great memories from that one. As for your musical choice, I found it very fitting (and hysterical). I'm sure Thor would be happy to know that he is being remembered and honored in such a way.

June 21, 2008 -- Philadelphia traded a pair of 2008 draft picks to Washington in exchange for defenseman Steve Eminger. The Capitals received the 27th overall pick (John Carlson) and a pick in the third round.
We got Eminger and a 3rd (#84, DeSerres) for the 27th.

Gretzky said that after the 1987 Finals as I recall. The goal against Boston, I was stunned expecting the play was whistled down and Hextall was goofing off. The goal against Washington, I did the House of Pain "Jump Around."
