NHL Network HD coming to Cablevision!

I'm not sure if anyone here has caught this, but this is wonderful news for us hockey fans in the New York City metropolitan area!

It appears that now we know why those of us have seen an extended free preview of NHL Network longer than your usual one week timeframe like NHL Center Ice has.

Cablevision has announced today that their customers will receive between now and Thursday NHL Network HD on their iO Digital Cable channel lineup! The total number of HD channels Cablevision will provide will increase to 65, but this is still nowhere close to what their competitors offer. Either way, this is wonderful news!

PR Web press release (October 14):
Cablevision Continues High-Definition Expansion With Launch Of Five New Free HD Channels For iO TV® Customers

Meh, let me know when it hits Time Warner in Manhattan.

flankerbill13 10-14-2008 11:27 AM

if you have the HD box, do you have to pay extra for the channel??

Dagoon44 10-14-2008 12:00 PM

a H.D. box cost 9.99 a month compared to a regular box which is 5.00
the channels are free.

You sure? I thought the HD box costs the same amount as regular. Only DVR boxes cost more. HD is free on io as far as I know.

Just listen to the commercial

Anyway, great news.

NYR Sting 10-14-2008 12:04 PM

are you sure the channel is free?

As of now, the NHL Network is only available if you have the sports package (which is $5). I'm not sure if that will be changing.

EventHorizon 10-14-2008 12:12 PM

It's about time. :)

RangersFan 10-14-2008 12:51 PM

This is great news. What else is included in the 5 dollar sports package?

center ice for cablevision is a one time 159 payment right?

As far as I know, you don't need to pay extra for NHL Network HD. You just need to rent the HD cable box. The reason that I am even curious myself is that as we just discussed, Cablevision customers can only get NHL Network's SD channel if you subscribe to the iO Sports Park for an extra $6 per month or if you get NHL Center Ice and it is included as part of that package... But one of my friends that lives in Bergen County, New Jersey said he's had NHL Network since last Monday as a free preview since he doesn't have iO Sports Pak. It's odd because the standard free previews customers usually get is no more than 7 days. So perhaps NHL Network is becoming a basic channel like Versus is now. That is what I believe is going to happen here. I cannot confirm this 100%, but I can say this is a pretty good bet it will be.

As I said in my other post, you can still get NHL Network's SD channel if you order NHL Center Ice should you not want iO Sports Pak.

That $159 price for NHL Center Ice is a limited time "early bird" offer. Then it goes up to $169. Gee, what a big savings of $10! How about that? (enter sarcasm)

TVG Network (short for Television Games Network) according to its description on its web site... is an interactive horse racing network that combines live televised coverage from over 100 of the world's premier racetracks and allows viewers to make wagers from home: online, by phone, mobile phone and, where available, using a set-top remote control.

Cablevision customers only recently received CBS College Sports (formerly College Sports Television or CSTV). It's fine if you love college sports game coverage. It's obviously in direct competition with ESPN U and the FOX College Sports channels.

Time Warner customers in Mount Vernon, New York will have it by October 22nd. No word yet on when it will be the case for Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens.

You're welcome. I'm glad to help. Chances are, I'll probably have NHL Network HD by tomorrow morning. Usually Cablevision adds channels during the overnight hours even though when I received ESPN 2 HD, it was in the early afternoon when it was done.

By the way, I absolutely cannot stand those Cablevision promos I saw in this thread. I hate them especially because they're so incredibly annoying and are noise pollution. You talk about blatant pandering to the Latino audience, I don't know what isn't. That one with the puppets is even worse.

FLYLine24 10-14-2008 03:17 PM

Awesome....now how about getting CI in HD??

ReggieDunlop68 10-14-2008 04:47 PM

How do you set it up to turn on to a specific channel? I did it once and now I can't remember (and God forbid should I check the manual :)).

vipernsx 10-15-2008 02:45 PM

As a displaced NYer now in Las Vegas, my savior has been DirectTV, CenterIce, and a DVR. This being my 2nd season of the NHL Network I can say this....with the network still being so young, it's got a lot of potential to grow into. As a Ranger Fan I'd trade NHL on the Fly for the MSG pregame show or SportsCenter any day! A lot of the content is repeated, often the same thing back-to-back-to-back-to-back. It's nice, but it's not something you're really missing out on if you don't get it.

Same thing here in Brooklyn. They did say it could take up to 3 days I think, so I'm hoping they add it soon.
