Gainey proposes changes in the rules...

BG has given a proposition during the GM meetings, his prop is players are not allowed to slide on the ice to block shots or passes. You must have your skates on the ice at all times.
He was saying enough with changing the rules around goaltending.

Pretty dumb proposition.

Great answer. Thanks

Pax Macioretty 10-24-2008 04:58 PM

That's a terrible idea, i mean seriously, 2 min for blocking a shot ? lol

Franky Gee 10-24-2008 04:59 PM

Bad idea...

Bill McNeal 10-24-2008 04:59 PM

I'll give him credit for thinking outside the box to increase scoring (ie not just focusing on the goalie equipment and the size of the net), but I'm not a fan of this. Just seems wrong to penalize a guy willing to put his body on the line for the benefit of the team.

And what would happen to those classic diving plays where the defender comes back to block a pass on a 2 on 1? Or would that be allowed because you're "blocking" the pass with your stick and not your body?

That being said, I'd go this route sooner than making the nets bigger.

Wadafak?

Gainey :shakehead

Vinceee 10-24-2008 05:00 PM

i find the game exciting... we dont need more goals imo

Dwight 10-24-2008 05:08 PM

Very surprising to hear this come from Gainey.

The man's still a genius, probably a top 10 GM in the league, but this idea is ridiculous

TornACL 10-24-2008 05:15 PM

I find it strange that Gainey thinks that not allowing the players to block shots anymore makes the game more interesting, while in fact a player diving to block a 100 mph slapshot is quite spectacular to see.

Canadian_Brewtality 10-24-2008 05:16 PM

McGuire on the team 990 just said "Thats ********" in reference to gainey's proposition.

that isn't what Gainey proposed . He suggested that the player to get one skate on the ice , so basicaly , you can block a shot , but not by sliding all your body on the ice , la Carbo .

here the report from Lebrun ; " Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey proposes that players in the defensive zone must have at least one skate on the ice when blocking shots. So, instead of having players collapsing all over the ice and sliding all over the place, Gainey believes this would allow for more pucks to get through from the point and, hence, create more scoring chances. Great idea by Gainey, although it really puts the onus on the referees. "

ScherbakAttack 10-24-2008 05:20 PM

Yeah I'm not too fond of this idea. It's not something that deserves a penalty.

JrHockeyFan 10-24-2008 05:23 PM

Wow. Flamingos all over the ice. Great recipe for:

1. Lots of screen shots without blocking

2. Lots of injuries to the legs

Pedro McGuire* 10-24-2008 05:25 PM

I think BG is a very intelligent man, when he says something he has usualy though it out thouroughly. Despite alot of poeple thinking this sounds stupid, you have to agree that it would without a doubt make a huge difference.

beowulf 10-24-2008 05:26 PM

Would take a lot of getting use to. funny thing is that he team is one of the best at blocking shots.

Habskrieg 10-24-2008 05:26 PM

I like the idea, as long as it is diving in order to block a shot on the net, I'm for it. This could make a difference in selecting offensive players for their defensive skills, and defensive players for their offensive skills. Plus, it also helps out players that play on the point. I wouldn't say it's an excellent idea, but I don't mind it, I for one would like to see what this gives.

psychonaut 10-24-2008 05:27 PM

Wow you slide on the ice, get hit by a 100mph puck, your hurt and they give you a 2 min penalty?? Ouch that hurts.

But I think more goals does not make it more exiting. Many great games where 2-1, 3-2 what ever.

So standing and blocking shots will cause more injuries then sliding and blocking a shot? .... Interesting.

NewHabsEra* 10-24-2008 05:29 PM

I dont get this one.. Pretty surprising from Gainey..

I think what he meant is that players will be less encouraged to jump in front of a shot. Therefor avoiding injuries related to blocking a powerful shot.

bib 10-24-2008 05:32 PM

Imagine Trent McCleary being stretchered off to the penalty box

Gainey :shakehead

Fire Brunet* 10-24-2008 05:35 PM

OK this deserves a Gainey :shakehead
