They've got some cap space. Any idea on what his salary demands would be?

Quellet The Dogs Out 11-03-2008 10:46 PM

Apparently he will accept under a million.... and that would be pro-rated, obviously.

But that opens up a whole pandoras box of roster moves for the Flyers.

He will slow down the Flyers.

doesn't stop us from keeping Knuble who isn't possibly faster than Shanny.

Only way I see it working is using him to make up for lost offense in a trade where a guy like Lupul or Hartnell is moved for defense. Otherwise it seems pretty pointless.

Kaktus* 11-03-2008 11:20 PM

PP will be around 30%.

Lupul and Kukkonen for a top-4 defenseman, I'd guess. Who's available?

Just like how the Rangers PP was.....right?

Iggy-4-50 11-03-2008 11:34 PM

He wants to stay close to home in NY. bummer, if he came to Calgary i would drive his kids to school if it made a difference. I might even drive his wife as well.

What does Rangers PP have to do with the Flyers PP? Where is the comparison? I just do not see it. Say what you want about his speed, age etc etc THis player still has that shot and it was a little off last season below 10% junior.

Last year: Knuble with 15 PP goals and Shanny with 11, Hartnell with 10, Briere with 14

Add Gagne and Carter to the list this year

Briere Knuble Gagne
Timonen Richards

Hartnell Carter Lupul/Shanny
Coburn Sbisa/Shanny

But would you drive Craig Janneys wife?

i'd be ok with shanahan if he is in fact a replacement for someone being dealt for a defenseman. git 'er done, homer.

Perhaps he's shopping Knuble. With the start he's had, he's got decent value right now. Moving him also gives up some cap relief.

Trade Knuble (+) for some defensive help.
Sign Shanny with left over cap room.

While I understand Shanahan is older, I think swapping Knuble for Shanny is pretty much a lateral move.

If it (Knuble, +) lands us a decent defenseman to shore up the back end, then I too, would approve.

Especially if he's willing to play for around 1 million.

I'd do it in a heartbeat, Knuble + Jones would be my dream deal as I cant stand Randy Jones

Panaccio: Flyers Meet with Shanahan

Monday, November 3, 2008

By Tim Panaccio
CSNPhilly.com

Paul Holmgren isn’t happy with the defensive play of his forwards. So much so that the Flyers’ general manager met Monday afternoon with free agent left wing Brendan Shanahan.

“Brendan wants to play, so we sat down and chatted about the possibilities,” Holmgren told CSNPhilly.com. “We would have to jump through some hoops to get a deal done because of the cap, but we could do something.”

The Flyers are top-heavy with forwards, and they are about $700,000 under the NHL’s $56.7 million salary cap. They would have to lose salary. Other sources say the 39-year-old Shanahan might be willing to play for less than $1 million given so many clubs are strapped by the salary cap right now.

Around 26%

TOML 11-04-2008 11:22 AM

Yeah i can see this. But... What happened to Downie?

WJG 11-04-2008 11:24 AM

I still say he ends up on the Leafs. They need another top-six forward with Tlusty in the minors.

Nothing. He's not a defensive player nor he doesn't bring veteran leadership.

Two things the Flyers could use.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shanahan in a Philly uniform. As for Knuble, if he could be part of a package to get defensive help I'd be all for that. Replacing Knuble with Shanahan would be a wash. Plus Shanny's leadership would be helpful.

NYRSinceBirth 11-04-2008 01:00 PM

I would hate to see him in Orange and Black. I was hoping to either see him in a Rags or Red Wings jersey before he retired. Oh well, I still have to llove what he brought to NY. Good luck Shanny.
