Guess The Pens Next Winger Game

There is a very good chance that Shero deals for a winger by the deadline.

Make a guess who you think it will be... you only get one guess though.

I'm going with Guerin. The Isles will most likely be sellers at the deadline... he is getting older (38) and they will most likely want to move him for some kind of asset.

Guerin also will not cost nearly as much as the more high profile wingers who might be available at the deadline.

He is having another good season with 10 pts in 15 games. He shoots righty and would fill the power fwd. role they are lacking right now.

He would look really good on one of the top two lines and I believe would have a huge impact in the playoffs.

I really wouldn't want Guerin. He's never really proved much in the playoffs, and if we were to trade for another winger, I'd hope we'd do better.

However, that might be what we would have to settle for if it comes down to that. I don't think we have the spare assets like last season to make a Hossa-esque move unless we trade core players and high draft picks.

Burgs 11-12-2008 10:31 AM

Guerin makes a lot of sense, but I'll go with Martin Havlat. Shero will be outbid by the Habs for Gaborik so we'll settle for the next best thing.

Hossa was considered a playoff bust until he played with Crosby...

Guerin still has something left in the tank... he is big and a force around the net and along the boards... he can still skate... he is also a right handed shot... he is going to be an UFA this Summer so he is going to be on the trade block I believe.

I don't want to see the Pens make another big trade like last season. They will actually have to give up something of value this time... and I feel like Guerin can be had for a 2nd and a mid level prospect perhaps.

I know he can make a big impact for the Pens if Shero acquires him.

I have to agree. Unless there is an offer he can't refuse for Staal(this is not a trade Staal post, just discussing possibilites) I can't see there being too many that a)you'd want to give up, and b)that teams would want in exchange for an impact player.

From the hockey perspective I don't think I want trade Staal after last night's performance, but salary cap considerations may come into play. If so, you might acquire a winger and some other pieces that way. As to whether or not you're better off though.....tough call. That is a big hole to fill.

(turning into talk radio caller)" Send Maxime Talbot and a 2nd round draft choice to Calgary for Jarome Iginla. Throw in Scuderi if they balk and you should have a deal."
(talk radio caller off).

Paul Kariya.

Blues are one of the worst teams in the NHL again, he has one year left after this one, age 33, can keep up with Sid, has a good shot, plays left wing, cap hit of 6

bathroomSTAAL 11-12-2008 10:57 AM

I want no part of Guerin. Guy is a fossil. We need someone who can help the team long-term.

That's what FA is for... Guerin isn't going to become a fossil by the Spring.

Anyone who doesn't want Guerin on the team this season hasn't watched him play. You think he couldn't make a big impact on Malkin or Croby's line? Please...

I'm looking at wingers who can make an impact this year without giving up any valuable pieces and let Shero worry about finding long term solutions this Summer.

AEKaki 11-12-2008 11:15 AM

I think we have a chance for Kariya and Stempniak from the Blues. Stempniak would be a great addition because of his right-handed shot.

AEKaki 11-12-2008 11:17 AM

What about Erat?

I would love to have Stempniak but Guerin would be cheaper.

No way Erat is traded, he just signed a 7 year contract. And he isn't the type of player the Pens need, he is allergic to shooting the puck.

I'm gonna go with Shane Doan.

You really think the Habs are going to go after another winger this season with the addition of Tanguay to their already strong wingers?

It wouldn't surprise me. It's their centennial year and I'm sure they want to make it real special. More importantly, they will have 10 UFA next summer including Koivu, Tanguay, Kovalev and Komisarek. This season might be their last chance with the current core.

IHWR 11-12-2008 11:56 AM

Milan Hejduk. I think Colorado's going to fall way out of contention in the tough North-West Division and will deal away some of the non-future.

Hejduk has one more year left at $4 million after this season.

It's a bit of a long-shot guess...but he's a guy I'd be interested in even with his contract having another year on it.

I think it moved...

No way Chicago trades Havlat... Chicago's days of being sellers at the deadline are history. What about a guy like Slava Kozlov?

I don't think Hossa and Guerin are good comparables. The reason why is because Hossa's non-producing playoff seasons were when he was an extremely young player. As he entered his prime, he had good playoff years in Ottawa.

Guerin has never really had a good playoff that I can recall off the top of my head.

I'd love Hejduk. He's still young, and he's been on a cup winning team. Plus, he knows how to play with top flight centers.
