Kovalev

Is he gonna start playing any time soon? He doesn't even look like he is trying out on the ice. He is suppose to be one of the leaders of this team but he's been terrible. I don't want to hear about how great he was last year because that doesn't really matter. He's almost like a black hole right now on his line. Pleks and AKost are out skating but Kovalev is just floating. What's his problem?

usernam 11-14-2008 07:47 AM

I won't say anything about Kovalev until next game. IMO, the next game is decisive. We'll see if he'll bounce back or not.

Riverboat Gambler 11-14-2008 07:52 AM

Physically Kovalev has hit the point of diminishing returns. Although, he's still strong on his skates he's pretty slow. The best way to play against him is to be physical, as it takes him off his game (as evidenced in how after he was hit, all he did was focus on retaliating). It's still early and we've seen his skill set be effective as recent as last year so I'm willing to give him some more time. However thus far this year he's been too slow.

Give him more time on the PP!

And that proves what exactly?

To me it looks like he is just going through the motions. He hasn't showed anything close to the emotion that he showed last year and it's a little worrisome.

7th Player 11-14-2008 09:30 AM

He definetly has to get things going!!!
As does the rest of the team!
It's time we STOP playing like All-Stars and start playing as a team!!

HellasLEAF 11-14-2008 10:01 AM

Kovalev is going to be a 2nd half player. I think he is going through the motions too. He's been around the game a long time it's gotta take big games to fire up the old dog.

TheCH* 11-14-2008 10:14 AM

Why is Kovalev not on the first PP? Thats where he works his magic and he is only getting like 30 seconds on each pp..

Pascal 11-14-2008 10:37 AM

Baby Kovy was upset he didn't play on the PP enough last night. He has a contract to get this summer!

Why should he get the time? If he's going to float around on the ice during his shifts.. he doesn't deserved to get treated well.

Taupy 11-14-2008 10:44 AM

Maybe he wants a new contract?

HamrlikTheStud* 11-14-2008 10:56 AM

He has to get a surgery every 3 or 4 years for his knees problems... This is the 3rd year... And there are rumours he has some problems with his knees.

WeThreeKings 11-14-2008 11:01 AM

I'm way ahead of you guys.

Magic33 11-14-2008 11:03 AM

I think its a simple case of him trying to do to much. For how sweet his hands are, he simply cannot dangle 5 guys and score. He needs to start using his linemates. Speed has never been his staple. That whole line needs to step up, because when they're going, they make room for each other in the offensive zone. It'll come soon

HotPie 11-14-2008 11:04 AM

I'm interested to see how he responds tomorrow. So far, he's playing himself off a contract with the Habs.

place the blame directly on carbo. he gets NO powerplay time, and when he does get a few seconds it's with the second unit (no Markov). Carbo needs to learn to manage his players properly in order to get the best out of them. we all know the type of player Kovy is... you have to put him on the ice in pressure situations when we need a big goal or a powerplay goal.

If this is really the real kovalev, I think it is his last year in montreal

If he cant be usefull whenever we put him on the ice, why should we keep him?

Lets trade him to the trashers, they will have 2 kovy's and we could have Little :naughty:

Its got nothing to do with punishing him for how he has played, he was demoted there since the season started. We all know thats where he plays best, he needs to be playing more pp time plain and simple.

Seems like people want to keep him off it just out of spite(like you for instance), and not because its for the greater good of the team.

To be fair, our PP started with Kovy on the left side and Markov on the right. For some special, magical reason, they decided to change what made our PP #1 the last season.
Seeing as the Koivu line started the season great, right from the 2-3rd game, they became the #1 PP unit.

Now I don't care what anybody says about Kovalev, he's a baby, he's a primadona, or wtv. This doesn't change the fact that he's on our team and we need him to perform as well as he can. So, as a coach, you have to know where your player usually excels and use him there, i.e the PP.

After last year, I thought Carbo understood that Kovy needs to feel important.
I think Carbs misused Kovy from the start. Changing the PP, meant removing what gave him close to 50pts last season..:shakehead: I understand Carbo probably thought he could balance out the PP more and in the end we'd still be the #1 around the league in PP. But it didn't work (until now at least), so why not go back to what made us so dangerous last year??..
I would give him more PP time so he could find his magic back because that's what we need. Not give him 41sec of PP icetime like yesterday:help: Kovalev needs to be on the right, and Markov has to play on that unit on the left point. Plain and Simple.

He was also never, not once, used in the shootouts so far.

You just don't do that to someone that needs and feeds off the spotlight.

I'm not putting all the blame on Carbo, Kovy should be working harder. But I feel Carbs is taking the same route he took in 06-07 with Kovy, slowly downgrading him. He made him play 41sec on PP yesterday, and put him with Lats-Lang, to make the slowest trio of the NHL.
