GAME PREIVEW
Nearly one-quarter through this season, it's the Colorado Avalanche and not the Los Angeles Kings who sit last in their division.

While losing seven of 10 wouldn't be a surprise for the Kings - who had the most losses and tied for the fewest points in the league last season, it is for the Avalanche heading into Saturday's game at the Staples Center.

Colorado (8-10-0) has only missed the playoffs twice since moving to Denver in 1994-95. Without an offensive revival, the Avalanche might make it three times.

Colorado, which ranks near the bottom of the league in goals per game (2.33), has played particularly poorly during its 3-7-0 stretch. The Avalanche have scored 13 times in those 10 games and managed one goal in a recent home-and-home series with Calgary.

The Flames won 1-0 on Thursday by holding Colorado to a season-low 18 shots, and the Avalanche enter Saturday's contest on a 113-minute scoreless streak.

According to winger Ian Laperriere, the team is pressing offensively.

"We're squeezing our sticks," he said. "We had a couple of good chances, but that's what happens when you struggle. ... Everybody squeezes the stick a little more. It was a better effort, but the same result."

Milan Hejduk hasn't scored in his last six games but leads the team with eight goals, and Paul Stastny has two assists in the past seven contests but still has a team-best 15 points.

That hasn't helped goalie Peter Budaj (6-9-0), who has yielded seven goals in his last five starts but gone 1-2-2. Budaj is 2-0-1 in the last three trips to the Staples Center, but has surrendered 10 goals.

If the Avalanche can repeat recent history, they may break out against the Kings. In going 4-1-1 in the last six meetings, Colorado has scored four goals in five of those games, and won three straight in L.A., including a 4-3 victory on Oct. 20.

Stastny has a point in seven of nine meetings with Los Angeles, getting three goals and nine assists. In 34 games, the veteran Hejduk has scored 13 times with 28 assists.

The Kings (8-8-2) have scored at least three goals in six of their last eight games, including a 5-2 victory Thursday over Washington.

Dustin Brown had his team-leading seventh goal, and Michal Handzus scored on an empty netter for his third goal in four games. Handzus also assisted Anze Kopitar, the team's leader with 14 points, on another empty net goal with a second left.

Kopitar, who had a team-leading 77 points last season, has experienced the most recent success against Colorado with four goals and four assists in nine games.

Erik Ersberg has also played a pivotal role in Los Angeles' recent run since taking over for a struggling Jason LaBarbera on Nov. 4. The Kings goalie, who has made eight straight starts, is among the league leaders with a 1.96 goals-against average and has guided Los Angeles to a 5-2-1 run.

Against Washington, he stopped reigning league MVP Alexander Ovechkin's goal-scoring streak at five.

"He played well, and we needed him to play well against one of the premier scorers in the league," Los Angeles coach Terry Murray said. "We won the game, and he was a big part of that."

Ersberg (5-3-1) has allowed more than two goals in a game once this season but has played less than 20 career minutes against the Avalanche, replacing LaBarbera in the third period Oct. 20 and stopping two shots.

Looks like Colorado's in a pretty big slump. Lets keep that going!

Or let Smyth dominate our team.
Again.

Chileiceman 11-22-2008 02:53 AM

You should beat us handily. I wouldn't worry about it. We suck ass.

Random Pre Game Thoughts

Obviously, these are the types of games the Kings need to take advantage of. When you're playing a weaker team, at home, two points is a must. With the remainder of the Kings' schedule being played on the road, it makes games like this even more important.

Colorado has been struggling to get get shots on goal lately. We know how good the Kings' defense is in this department, so I don't expect to see Colorado get too many opportunities.

Seeing Stastny's stats, makes me feel better about Kopitar.

When Ersberg starts, the Kings team GAA is 2.12, that would be good enough for 2nd best in the entire NHL. Only Minnesota is better. :amazed:

JPFT 11-22-2008 03:17 AM

Yeah, the new alternate jersey!
GO KINGS GO!!!!

Telos 11-22-2008 03:52 AM

Kings need to take advantage of this opportunity and get another streak going... Beat up Smyth and win the game. 3-1 Kings. Go Kings!

kingsholygrail 11-22-2008 03:52 AM

Should be a good one. Lets see our lines break out in this and have a complete dominate game again. Get a new streak going.

Telos 11-22-2008 03:56 AM

I think if Smyth gets near Ersberg, Ivanans needs to take his stick away from him, break it over his knee, and throw the two pieces over the glass. Then you point at him and tell him not to make us go get Jack Johnson.

Guess what former King we get to play against?

BRIAN WILLSIE!!!!!

YAAAAAAAAY

:handclap::handclap::handclap:

Seriously, he is cracking an NHL roster, we pretty much have this in the bag

FootKnight 11-22-2008 06:03 AM

The Avs are having even more trouble scoring than we are, but Budaj has been playing well recently. Could be a very low scoring affair, but I'm hoping the top line can light it up. Go Kings!

Captain Ron 11-22-2008 09:12 AM

The Avalanche will be utterly baffled by the ugliness of the Kings 3rd jersey....it will totally throw off their game and the Kings will win 6-0.....then Murray will petition to play with the 3rd jerseys the rest of the season.;)

Captain Ron 11-22-2008 09:17 AM

I just noticed that as of right now Esrberg has the 3rd best GAA in the NHL (even better than Lundqvist and Luongo:amazed:), I hope he can keep that up....or even improve it.:handclap:

Cutty Sarkn3ss* 11-22-2008 10:17 AM

I'll be at the game tonight to watch them sport those ugly ass jerseys. . .should be fun.

Go Kings!

sueroe 11-22-2008 10:22 AM

Hopefully the Kings can build on some confidence from last game and keep it going.

Lets go Kings!

Chruceg 11-22-2008 10:28 AM

That last Colorado game sucked ... I will not tolerate another game like that! Sweep the Leg!!! YEEEEAAAAHHHH!

I've been a Kings fan a very long time and I do not remember reading or saying this type of statement "We know how good the Kings DEFENCE is ". Wow what a long strange trip its been..........Go Kings Go:D

DeeMeck 11-22-2008 11:48 AM

Is everyone supposed to wear black tonight?

Well i know colorado's been in a slump but for some reason they always come out strong against us.. Hopefully our D plays like they did against the caps....

Cant wait to see those jerseys in action

Captain Ron 11-22-2008 12:34 PM

Don't stare at Tony though.....you will go blind!:D

girl4kings 11-22-2008 12:53 PM

For some reason they always seem to struggle with the Avs. I hope with them in a slump we can take advantage of this and win 3-1 with the Avs getting only 17 shots on net. :)

girl4kings 11-22-2008 12:55 PM

Oh ya plus meet the players is tomorrow so I'm sure they want to win so they don't have to hear everyone *****ing tomorrow. When the Kings win the night before an event everyone is so much happier.

DeeMeck 11-22-2008 01:06 PM

Which is why the Royal rebound happened right....lol...if I recall correctly it was the night before meet the players.
