If YOU were THE coach..

How will you proceed with this team from this point on?

After taking into account all that have happened since the beginning of the season, i would do the following:

About the lineup:

I would formulate four offense lines and stick with them for the next 4 games - vs Islanders, Detroit, Capitals, Buffalo - to try to create chemistry between the linemates for good. After the 4th game, i would only make "1" move (switch two players) if necessary. Otherwise, keep those lines for the rest of the year.

The lines would be:

Tanguay - Koivu - AK46
Kosto - Lang - Kovalev
Higgins - Plek - SK74
Lats - Lapierre - Begin/Laraque

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - O'Byrne/Brisebois
Bouillon - Gorges

Price
Halak

I guess it's pretty probable that after 4 games, some line tinkering would be needed. Probably between Kosto, SK74 and Lats.

If some of the offense lines still don't work out after the end of the year, i would ask Gainey to call up D'Agostini to replace the under-performing player.

As for defense, sorry i have no clue :)

About the style of play:

I would ask Tanguay and Koivu to shoot the puck a bit more, and try to shoot low instead of the goalie's chest to provoke rebounds. But on this line, AK46 should do the shooting most.

I would ask Kovalev to stop hogging the puck and make quicker plays. Kosto would stay in front of the net on that line.

About PP:
SK74 - Plek - Kovalev
Markov - AK46

Lang - Koivu - Tanguay
Markov - SK74

And ask them to shoot 2x more!

Yesterday's line played good. Every single line had scoring chances.
If those line give out the same effort every night, we'll be as dangerous as we were last year.

Born in 1909 11-23-2008 11:16 AM

1) Hire a shooting coach/ offensive specialist

2) Tons and tons of high-speed passing drills

3) Bring in the occasional respected HOF guest speakers to talk to the team about what it takes to win... just to break the monotony of hearing Carbo's voice everyday "were not working hard enough"

ex.

Mike Bossey :handclap:
Robinson :handclap:
Howe :handclap:
even Roy :handclap:

On yeah...

4) Crank up the CRUNCHING VIOLENT METAL between periods to Jack the the team's KILLER INSTICT up

Pantera will do fine

Cyrrus147 11-23-2008 11:19 AM

If I was the coach...I would fire myself for being incompetent with a extremely talented lineup !

Magic33 11-23-2008 11:24 AM

I think the lines havent been the huge problem so far this year, I think it has just been the lack of effort on most nights.

TCIH 11-23-2008 11:36 AM

1) Work on a different strategy of holding up the opposition in their transition game. As of right now, the current system isn't working, and the Bruins free reign into the Montreal zone last night emphasizes that. The defense is retreating too quickly, so the opposing forwards have an easy job of skating into the attacking zone with momentum and setting up (see Boston's second goal).

2) Ensure that players are constantly moving on the power-play, as well as moving the puck quickly. Passes should be fast, and when a shot is taken from the point, there needs to be a body screening the goalie, as well as at least one more there near the net for the rebound.

3) 20 laps in practice to whoever raises their hands after hooking/tripping/holding. You're going to get caught every time, so don't do it.

4) Put in place a system where the gap between the forwards and defense is smaller than it is now. There's been virtually no puck support the last few games (before the Boston game, anyway) and it's lead to sustained pressure by the other team.

5) Have a long talk with Ryan O'Byrne about what to do in certain situations, especially zone clearances. He has size and reach, and if the GM isn't going to send him back to the A for seasoning, then he needs to learn the right thing to do, and he needs to learn fast.

6) Change the lines, and keep them for a sustained period of time with only minor changes. I'm thinking the following:

Tanguay - Koivu - Higgins
S.Kostitsyn - Lang - A.Kostitsyn
Latendresse - Plekanec - Kovalev

7) Play Price 5 games to Halak's every 1, at least early in the season.

I agree , and even more if you ask me.

Take out Laraque for Latendresse, and you have my lines for right now.

tanguay - koivu - sk74
higgins - pleks - ak27
latendresse - lang - ak46
lapierre - begin - kosto

* I'd actually switch ak27 with ak46, but I doubt Carbo would.

Makes little sense. You'd want Price playing more games at the end of the season, not the beginning. The beginning is where you keep him fresh by letting Halak get his starts.

That would give Halak, in total, like 6 more starts the whole season. Not enough. When you have a backup that good, you can let him get 20-25 starts so Price stays fresh.

I would reunite andrei with pleks and kovy and try and reignite the magic if not i'd call up dago and webber to send a message

Travis Moen 11-23-2008 12:06 PM

Tanguay - Koivu - Latendresse
AKost - Plek - Kovy
Higgins - Lang - SKost
Larnaque/Begin/Dandenault - Lapierre - Kostopoulos

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - Gorges
Bouillon - O'Byrne/Brisebois

Habs 11-23-2008 12:13 PM

The only real issues are the leaders not leading by example. Whether its on D or up front, too many guys look uninterested. I mean, I haven't noticed Higgins since his hatrick against the Sens, Kovalev looks uninterested and AK is floating more than ever.

They will get it back, every single team goes through a tough spell in the season, we are hitting it early.

Kosto - Lang - Kovalev ? Are you sure?

Kovy and Lang have both lost a step and are slow. Kosto on a scoring line isn't a good idea. At least put Higgins on the 2nd line and Kosto on the third. I would even put Lats on the third line and Kosto on the fourth "energy" line.

Sports1131 11-23-2008 12:26 PM

Tanguay - Koivu - A. Kostitsyn
Higgins - Plekanec - S. Kostitsyn
Latendresse - Lang - Kovalev
Laraque/Begin - Lapierre - Kostopoulos

Yes. This looks a lot better.

la25ecoupe 11-23-2008 12:46 PM

I would also tell Laraque to be more agressive. Sometimes, even if he will cause a lost, we have to send the message.

OneSharpMarble 11-23-2008 12:58 PM

Kovalev would be watching a few games from the pressbox. Then I would tell him "if things dont change it only gets worse" and "I hear Phoenix is nice this time of year"

Then I would show him footage of himself from last season and say "Here this is the guy we want, he's the one with a future".

Also Plekanec needs some serious help, maybe new line mates. A call up from the farm might be in order.

Iwishihadacup 11-23-2008 02:36 PM

I would bench the ass of Kovalev, Then use the following lineup

Latendresse-Koivu-Tanguay
Higgins-Plekanec-Andrei K
Sergei K-Lang-Kostopoulos
Begin-Lapierre-Laraque

Then, I would make Kovalev starve until he wants to prove the point of him being with the team, then I would introduce him gradually, like i would do with any rookie, with no pp time

Latendresse-Koivu-Tanguay
Higgins-Plekanec-Andrei K
Sergei K-Lang-Kostopoulos
Begin-Lapierre-Kovalev

Then, if he can play with a bit of inspiration, for a few games, I would bump him further

Latendresse-Koivu-Tanguay
Higgins-Plekanec-Andrei K
Sergei K-Lang-Kovalev
Begin-Lapierre-Kostopoulos

Then if he keeps playing well, I give him some powerplay time, but, If he get slumpy and tasteless again, I would go back one step, until he shows consistency

:win:

Oh and if he's not happy, I would ask Bob to send his ass to Atlanta

Then I would ask him to call up D'agostini

shao01 11-23-2008 02:46 PM

I'd get rid of Lang and call up Chipchura.

This could be our best potential line-up. First line rocked, 2nd line would play as a line finally. 3rd line worked really well early on and as Kovalev doesnt pass the puck there's no need to give him linemate that cna do something with it.

habfaninvictoria 11-23-2008 03:25 PM

1/ I would tell the D to stop trying to make the big one time breakout breakaway pass, these have rarely worked and disrupt the flow of play. I don't have the stats but I'd be willing to bet we're near the lead in number of icings against. This pass worked early in the season but teams expect it now and the best we hope for is to knife the puck in and be able to be in with a strong forecheck.

2/ No more dipsy doodle backhand passes at the blue line (ours or theirs). Teams expect in now and are poaching resulting in too many odd many rushes.

3/ Just for fun (cause nothing else is working) but BGL on the PP and put him in front of the net. Teams now are defending us by collapsing in front and allowing the perimeter shot, which is low percentage. Putting BGL in front would force teams to try and move him and may create another penalty and create a bit more space at the point or high slot depending on how we're moving the puck.

umm you know what buddy...

1-4 of you said right there is spot on :yo::handclap:

so that plus

my lines would be

lats-koivu-tangs
higgins-pleky-akost
skost-lang-kovy
kostops-chip-lappy/begin/bgl

Markov - Gorges
Hammer-Komi
Cube-Weber (both obyrne and breezer are sucking so i'd rather have a rookie with a cannon shot and can play the PP make mistakes than a vet and sophmore that do nothing)

Price
Halak

WeThreeKings 11-23-2008 03:55 PM

Like if I was coach.. or if I was Carbonneau? 'Cause if I was Carbs, I would quit.
