The PP Shooter....Gorges?

Change of pace from O'B, Lucic et cie.

I was of a mind to rotate S.Kost, Hamrlik and Brisebois until we figured out which one hit the net the most, and with the best force.

My thinking was that A.Kost & Kovelev ought to stay down low, in motion, to maximize their talents on the PP.

Watching last night, S.Kost still looks like the one of those 3 who can hit the net most of the time. Hamrlik and Brisebois seem to shoot harder but the key thing is that shots hit the net, so there's at least a) a scoring chance and b) a chance for a rebound.

Now, I never considered Gorges, but he scored a goal & his other shots looked pretty good all night. I know it's one game, but that's an experiment I'd like to continue for the next 10 games to see what's possible. It's not a blast, but it's more accurate than I remember. Was it just *his* night?

Did anyone else see the PP where Markov was on the left side, and Robert Lang was positioned on the right point as the shooter? Was it just that once shift, or did anyone see it happen again?

We need a shooter for the PP to work, it's a "Shooting" formation and we haven't solved this yet.

lol... no dice on Gorges being the PP solution

Well he wasen't even supposed to make the team last year and look at him now. He's getting better every game.

Gorges has recently been given a bigger role due to a key injury, and he is responding with an increase in his production and even better overall play.

He probably isn't the answer we are looking for to help a struggling PP, but the thought definitely deserves consideration.

MrNasty 11-25-2008 04:43 PM

it is worth a shot until Gainey beats the bushes some more. Nobody else has seized that spot. At least Gorges has a hard low shot...he just never gets to use it.

Sure, that's one opinion alright. Please feel free to contribute your thoughts on who that shooter ought to be.

Some will say that Gorges has been the most improved player so far, and I remember the talk that said the very same thing last year - that he was last year's most improved player. So ya gotta admit he's on the upswing.

What would you do?

Erika 11-25-2008 04:59 PM

Sergei's slappers is so underrrated. Out of Markov, Tanguay, Hamrlik and Brisebois, Sergei slap shot is probably the most accurate. Several of his one-timers created scoring chances by giving rebounds or touching the post.

Keep Sergei there. Give him 5-10 games and see what happens.

I don't think it's a bad idea to try, I mean what do we have to lose? The PP isn't really working and Gorges is playing better every game. I'd like to see Carbo try it...he can't be any worse than Brisebois out there.

ReVeuF 11-25-2008 05:01 PM

All the PP point guy need is to have a somewhat accurate shot, so far Gorges proved it last game, maybe not a powerful shot but at least it is on the net.

redmachine54 11-25-2008 05:05 PM

I'd leave Sergei there for now; I'm sure he's been told to shoot, and his shooting is pretty damn good. I like what I've seen so far.

I thought Gorges would get some PP time on the second unit this year, but I also didn't think Brisebois would be playing as much as he has, who would definitely have higher priority over Gorges on the PP.

We more or less have that in Sergei Kostitsyn already. But Gorges is looking like a good option too. Too me, given that he's already playing with Markov right now, I would keep the pair intact and use S.Kost on the 2nd wave.

No, they really are just average, no better than the other guys mentioned so far. But he hits the net and doesn't need to be in particular spot to do it, so he should continue to get his chance. The odd time he really connects and wires it good but those aren't the norm.

Gorges is doubtless being rewarded by the coach for his play, he has earned his PP time the way a real hockey player should. I'll be the first to chuckle if he suddenly becomes a success there, but Brisebois has been worse than I hoped, and Hamrlik misses a ton.

Call up Weber and see what he can do...
Last year the turning point was when Lapierre and Sergei were called up.

Yes, that's another option, I forgot about him. But we'd have to send down O'Byrne, I don't think there's room on the team for 2 young D-men who can't defend very well at the same time.

Yes, you are right on this one.
Other options would be to grab a PP specialist via trade. Corvo, Preissing, etc... I doubt Corvo is available. Any suggestions ?

Maxpac 11-25-2008 06:36 PM

Our pp is 23rd in the league, right now i am open to ANY suggestions. I still don't get why carbo hasn't tried putting hammer on the right with Markov back on the left, but Georges looks to have a real nice low slapper just like Streit has. I said this summer that it was in Georges' best interest to practice on his slappers and one-timers with the vacant pp shooter, now's the perfect time to try it, we coudn't suck more even if we tried. It's so obvious that we need a damn shooter, why doesn't Gainey do anything about it?

HockeyF3ind 11-25-2008 06:39 PM

I think this idea has A LOT of merit behind it...Gorges is by far and away THE most improved/impressive player this season....he has been absolutely AMAZING so far, and has demonstrated he might have a quality boomer shot to be of use on the PP...i believe this is definitely worth a shot.

mariolemieux66 11-25-2008 06:53 PM

Shanahan might help on the PP, he will putshimself in front of the net for tip-in and rebounds or shoot forthe one timer.
Trade Higgins and a young prospect dmen for a good offensive dmen.

Not with the team we have.
There is a few things missing.

Habs10Habs 11-25-2008 08:10 PM

No offense against Gorges, who has really stepped up this year. But if he's getting considered to be our "Shooter" on the PP, we are really in trouble.

We need someone who's shot will intimidate, sorry but Gorge's shot doesn't strike fear into anyone. I still would love to see A.Kost given that spot.

plafleur10 11-25-2008 08:19 PM

Weber is not dressed for Hamilton tonight...Recall in view for the PP???

Why do you say that when we have no clue what his offensive potential is....

Look at Souray's NHL numbers before he started shooting, hell look at his junior years numbers. Georges is our 2nd best passing defensmen and he proved yesterday that he has a good shot. There's no downside in trying since our pp already sucks. If that doesn't work then we need a defensmen ASAP.

Souray was a lousy defenseman when he came up. But he's always had the shot. Gorge's shot is decent, but if you want just decent...keep Sergei on the point.

Andrei K has a freakin canon....teams will not come out to the point and challenge his shot. Where as if we put Gorges there, they won't be intimidated, and they will be all over him.

Our PP doesn't need another passer on it. We have too much passing going on as it is now. We need a shot, and even though Gorges scored last night...he's not the answer.

Taupy 11-25-2008 08:49 PM

Gorges has been tried on the powerplay for the last 2 years in the preseason. He wasn't really bad so we might give it a try. He has a good shot but the question is, would he intercept all the passes and make good passes too?
