Witt & Grier

What are your thoughts on the possibility of acquiring both Brendan Witt and Mike Grier?

Montreal has interest in Witt, and my friend said he heard LA and Montreal are two of five teams after Grier... Perhaps we could offer a good-enough package for them? Use Grier on the 3rd line with Bulis and Begin, move Ward to the fourth line.

Thoughts?

i can see a deal like that or hill and oneill in carolina. hill and oneill will propably cost a lot. i cant see us going after lindros now. if gainey was interested in him, why didnt he offer more to NYR in the kovalev deal to get him? richardson, odelien are propably also possible but then if were still interested in a forward, there would have to be another deal. the wash deal to get grier and witt would kill two birds with one stone.

I agree... helps us in two areas. I think it would be an ideal move, after acquiring Kovalev.

Maybe we deal Bouillon, Plekanec, a 2nd or 3rd (in 2005) and we throw in Dackell (even pay some of his remaining salary, since we have no use for him).

Would give us something like...

Zednik - Koivu - Kovalev
Dagenais - Ribeiro - Ryder
Bulis - Begin - Grier
Sundstrom - Juneau/Perreault - Ward
(then sub in Kilger, Langdon when need be...)

Souray - Witt
Brisebois - Quintal
Markov - Rivet

I wouldn't say Lindros is out of the question yet. I would imagine like most GM's, Gainey would prefer to see him play before making a deal for him. Last I read was that the "big E" is suppose to play this weekend. So we will have to wait and see.

As for O'Neill and Hill...all I ask myself is - "What is that going to cost?~?~" and the answer I get is....too much :D

I think Witt is more of a possibility and I'll keep pushin for Halpern :yo:

I don't see the Caps dealing Halpern... he's been one of their more productive players.

Habber 03-04-2004 12:24 AM

Witt would be awesome but we don't really need Grier. We already have lots of 3rd line players.

I don't know where you get off saying we have no use for Dackell, because he's been one of our most consistent players all year long.

I think BG will pick another D-man for insurance because we can't count on Komi in the playoffs. I would be happy we picked up either Witt or Gauthier.

thats what im thinking of the carolina deal. the GM there wanted ryder/komisarek and zednik for oneill and hill didnt he? theres no chance in hell of that happening. the fact that he demands that though(if it is true) tells me that even if we bargain with him, we could still come down as desperate and lose the deal.

Witt would be beyond excellent. He'd also cost a lot, like Hainsey plus.

Grier? I might have said yes if Gainey had decided to go low rent on the wing, but since he's plugged that hole, I think the next order of business is replacing Juneau's slow ass with a rugged veteran PK specialist. Make it Witt and Halpern and we're talking.

if its still possible to deal again with the rangers, why not get simon? hes a physical winger who can get garbage goals and be good around the boards.

The only place Simon could play on the Habs is in Ward's spot. That's fine by me, but is it worth giving up an asset to upgrade from Ward to Simon, especially since he won't get all that much ice time?

If you are suggesting Simon as a replacement for Dagenais, I would say no. That's a step backwards. I also wouldn't want to play him on the third line, as I like the idea of using the third line as a pure shut-down line. I'm pretty sure Gainey does too, as he's seen the Habs have tons of success using lines like these.

here's the latest on the Capitals... dated March 4, 2004

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/was42.html

it still mentions montreal chasing witt... but it also says this:

winger Mike Grier could be dealt, although it would take a hefty offer for Washington to part with Grier.

#44_delivers 03-04-2004 01:02 AM

Zednik - Koivu - Kovalev <------ a talented all euro line with tonnes of scoring prowess and speed off the wings

_____ - Ribeiro - Ryder <------- this line definaitly needs a "gifted grinder" with fair speed, anything to increase its possesion time.

Bulis - Begin - Sundstrom <------- "shadow lightning" line used against teams best lines, very fast fair skill, defencively sound and can put in the odd goal due to there fast transaction game and speed.

langdon - juneau - ward

Souray - Rivet

Markov - Quintal / ______ < id sooner replace quintal from my roster then boillion, this is where we need a new defencmen.(witt would be my choice)

Brisebois - boullion

both yanic and dagenias are not in MY roster, there a step in the wrong derection.

Ah. So Pronger is to be a Hab then. *nods* Gotcha. :D

I would agree with the sentiment about Halpern, and I should think Gainey would covet him quite highly, however I think that's one asset in Washington that won't be going anywhere.

iamcaper 03-04-2004 12:20 PM

What about Miller? He's still got some offensive punch. I know, I know, he's not the big forward that we need but if Montreal is to get somebody along with Witt why not him?

I personally would love to see Holik in a Habs uniform!!!

I'm not sure BG wants to part with any more of his future. He did mention that the team is still in rebuilding mode after all. McPhee must be asking a lot for Witt who is 29 and can go to arbitration this summer. If there is no season next year, he becomes essentially a playoff rental.

hockey_nut 03-04-2004 12:42 PM

there's a big rumor going around that Witt has been, or will be, traded to either the Islanders or Montreal... anyone hear this?!
