Last season
December 7th, 2002 - Habs 4, Coyotes 2(Go to Bottom for details)

Preview:Ok, Tonight is the night. Kovalev is in town (Phoenix) and the habs and Koivu are loaded with a top sniper... I'm guessing Koivu didn't sleep last night thinking of all the scoring chances missed in the passed that will now find the back of the net. As for the game in itself... well i don't care ;). Nah seriously can we continue with the intensity of the last period in San Jose tonight? i think we can.Might be a better game than we all expect... Phoenix will want to end that losing streak tonight and the habs will be pumped with their new friend in the line up. Let's cheer for the habs !!! good game to all.

News and Notes:
. The habs will Have to take care of 2 dangerous players in Shane Doan (22g-40a=62p) and Daymond Langkow (19g-28a=47p).
. Coyotes' last game was against the oilers (4-5 OTL).
. Ladislav Nagy (24g-28a=52p)(out for remainder of season), Tanabe (defenseman, IR) and Nazarov (day to day) are all injured.
. Mike Comrie has 8 points in 12 games with the Coyotes (1g-3a=4p in 6 games agaisnt Montreal).
. Since Bowness is coaching, they have lost 4 in a row.
. On the road, the Habs' record is (15-15-2-2),and (7-4-2-1) against the western conference.
. Brent Johnson is coming to Phoenix in return of Mike Sillinger (to St Louis).

Kovalev's Comments on the trade:
"Q: What are your thoughts?

Alex Kovalev: Well to start, I donít know. You know, I have to do better than I did before. I came in and I was happy, and I wish I could have done better with this organization. But I guess it just didnít work for me. Maybe Iíll just work with a younger team. Maybe down the road, if something happens, Iíll get the chance to come back and do better. Right now, I donít want to hurt a team anymore and I guess itís just time for me to move, just go back and find what I was successful at. I think that Iím looking forward to seeing. Montreal is a young team and in the playoffs. Iíll get a chance to go back to the playoffs and try to be successful.

Q: Do you know why it didnít work here again?

Alex Kovalev: I donít know. I guess you try to take too much into your own hands and try to do too much and it didnít work out. Thereís a lot more guys here that are star players. I just didnít fit it. Thatís probably what I think. I just didnít fit in with this team. Maybe I will fit in better with a young team.

Q: Does it hurt? Are you shocked?

Alex Kovalev: I was expecting that they were going to trade me. They talked about it a lot, rumors have been around for a while about most of the guys, about Leetchie (Brian Leetch) and the other guys. But I knew that eventually I was going to go somewhere so I was ready for that. I tried to still play for this organization. You canít just stop playing, so I just kept working hard. Now I am just going to another team to continue to do my best.

Recap from last year
"--- Richard Zednik scored his team-high 13th goal as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 Saturday night to end a four-game winless streak.

Randy McKay, Chad Kilger and Andreas Dackell had the other Montreal goals, and Mike Ribeiro had two assists.

Jeff Hackett made 29 saves for the Canadiens, who were 0-2-0-2 after a 7-6 overtime loss at Colorado on Friday. But they had another streak going -- a 1-0-2 mark in the last three games against Phoenix.

Tony Amonte cut the Coyotes' deficit to 4-1 late in the second period, and Branko Radivojevic scored for Phoenix with 2:41 remaining.

The Canadiens wasted little time jumping on the slumping Coyotes, 1-4-4-1 in their last 10 games and 2-7-3-1 at home.

Phoenix, desperate to reverse a trend of slow starts, outshot Montreal 7-1 in the first eight minutes, but Hackett handled all of the attempts.

At the other end, Patrick DesRochers stopped Craig Rivet's slap shot -- Montreal's second -- but lost his balance. Zednik scored when he scooped the rebound over the fallen goalie 9:01 in. It was the ninth time in 10 games Phoenix fell behind in the first period.

McKay beat DesRochers from the circle with 4:36 left in the period, and Kilger made it 3-0 with 1:55 to play when he swept down the left side and fired across into the net from the bottom of the circle.

Kilger's unassisted goal, which came against his former team, proved to be the game-winner.

The Coyotes switched goalies between the first and second periods. DesRochers left with seven saves, and Brian Boucher finished with 20.

Boucher was screened by teammate Radoslav Suchy when he allowed Dackell's goal 5:01 into the second period.

Amonte scored his eighth goal from high in the slot, firing a shot that deflected off the stick of a Montreal defenseman and into the top corner of the net."

As long as the habs stay out of the box and dont take stupid penaltys like they did tuesday and that theo is on top of his game I think we have a good chanche of winning the game game.

The coming of Dowd smels the end of kilger in my opinion.

Bťgin -Dowd-Ward would be a sweet line in my opinion, from what I remember of Dowd in the playoffs last year, Dowd is a prety intanse player and would fit in nicely with Bťgin and ward. :yo: :yo:

The Coyotes haven't had a performing PP for a few years now. If Langkow and Doan are two to follow, Taffe has been playing well recently and Gratton was very sharp against the Oilers on tuesday (second star of the game).
Phoenix is in a losing funk and has been atrocious in the new Glendale Arena but i suppose this will have to stop one day and it is always dangerous to play at team like that. Will Johnson start in the net for the Yotes? Will this be an electrochoc for a sinking team?
Otherwise, if the Habs play a classic gritty game and if Kovalev connects well with his new teammates, that should be a win pour les Habitants.

Great job by Catala on the GDT. :handclap: Are you the new GDT maker, because you're making one heck of a job. Habs will win this one, Kovalev with a goal and an assist.

Bill McNeal 03-04-2004 09:06 PM

Don't usually make predictions, but I'm so excited about Kovalev I need to :)

I say 4-1 Habs. Koivu pots 2, Rivet and Brisebois get the others, Kovalev picks up an assist.

montreal 03-04-2004 09:10 PM

Is Dowd still injured or will he play?

Also I hope Garon gets the nod, then Theo on Saturday. Garon should play one of the next 3 games, we need Theo to be sharp.

anyone got an idea what the lines could look like?

I am expecting Garon to make the start in this one. Hopefully we get to see Boucher because he has just been brutal lately.

Any word on whether Dowd is going to play or not?

Can't wait to see Kovalev dawn the Habs jersey :D :handclap: :handclap: :handclap:

hehe, well i can't say i'm not excited myself... the GDT was ready since the San Jose game... Great that it is starting at 9 PM... for once i will be able to watch it on a friday night.

PS: For the betting thread guys, i can see a lot of bets involving Nagy as a scorer... Don't forget he won't be playing tomorrow... as well as Sillinger who isn't a Coyotes anymore...

PS#2: Thanks for the kinds words *Habsolument* i just had some time to waste this week, so i tried to use it well and makes it benefit all of us.

Also I hope Garon gets the nod, then Theo on Saturday. Garon should play one of the next 3 games, we need Theo to be sharp.

Sportsnet said he'll be in the lineup tomorrow. I can't wait, I think we could make a really strong playoff run. Look at it this way. We have Theo playing like 2 years ago, but a strong team around him this time.

According to Red Fisher in today's Gazette, Dowd is still on the mend and won't play. Fisher didn't suggest when he will be in the lineup but did say the injury is minor.

Just over 11 hours till AK-27's debut :rolly:

Signs seem to show that Dowd will not play tonight due to a minor knee injury, but time will tell for certain.

I hope the Habs' PK is better tonight, but, admittedly, we are still missing Bulis AND Sundstrom.

In any case, a hat trick for Kovy tonight.
GO HABS! BELIEVE!

BTW, excellent job on the game post. Between jl.roberts and yourself, we have two of the best game-day posters on this site.
