Thornton vs. Sundin?

I only ask because my Leaf fan friends got into a heated arguement over the same thing. so i just wanted to see what the general hockey fan world had to say about the matter. thanks.

Now: Mats Sundin
Future: Joe Thornton

Stephen 03-08-2004 10:21 PM

Sundin is better right now. He has won so many games for Toronto by scoring the late clutch goal. He's not the flashy young guy like Thornton is, but he's a battle hardened warhorse. And he's also outscoring Thornton this year too.

nordique 03-08-2004 10:58 PM

The question should clarify whether this is RIGHT NOW or OVERALL VALUE.

One game: Sundin
One season: Sundin

Would I trade Sundin for Thornton? Absolutely.

Charge_Seven 03-08-2004 11:09 PM

People need to post there reasoning on here, and not just vote. Apparently 9 people would rather have a guy who scores less, and has less experience. 9 so far that is.

Sudnin is definitely the man right now. He's the top 3 period point man in the league, he's tied (or was...) for most career overtime goals, he's got more playoff experience. Any team or person choosing for this very moment would be retarted to not choose Sundin. However, if we're talking for next season, and the year after, and the year after, then definitely Thornton.

Psycho Papa Joe 03-08-2004 11:21 PM

Right now Sundin is the better and smarter hockey player.

#44_delivers 03-09-2004 01:17 AM

as much as i hate to say it i pick thornton
but wow sundin is one classy guy.

Dabruins 03-09-2004 05:10 AM

This poll is for right now, at this very point who is a better overall player. Now i know all you leaf fans keep saying Sundin is the better clutch player and leader. But he isnt, what has he lead them too in his nine? years there? hell he was almost thrown out of toronto a couple of years ago. the only good playoffs he has had in the last 5 years was the one for his contract year. I think it was two years ago he got injured and the leafs didnt lose a game. Roberts took over as the team leader and then Sundin came back in the second round and in his first game back they lose and eventually lose the series. The guy is not so "Clutch" in the playoffs. Now, this is not to say that Thornton is either but all the arguements for Sundin are saying his clutchness and leadership make him better and i think the leadership aspect is false. Thornton is a better two way player, his face off % has gone up this year and im pretty sure is higher than Sundin. he has way more Heart already, he will stick up for team mates and take the heat when the team doesnt do well. he is a better playmaker than SUndin right now. and has been in the top players in the league for two years. I still take thornton right now over sundin, even though Joe hasnt had his best year point wise and Sundin is having a great year for himself.

nuksforlife 03-09-2004 01:51 PM

Joe Thornton easily

Psycho Papa Joe 03-09-2004 01:57 PM

This poll proves one thing. 58.7% of the people on this site just haven't watched Sundin and Thornton play.

FlyersGuy69 03-09-2004 04:38 PM

Joe Thornton

JOHNBOY 03-09-2004 05:35 PM

Joe Thornton.

Sting 03-09-2004 10:11 PM

I'm wondering how Sundin even got half of Thornton's total..go leaf fans go. Sundin is past his prime, but he's also the main go-to guy, especially considering mogilny was out the whole season. The Leafs don't really have an all-out offensive threat and one of the main reasons Sundin has the points is because he's always being given the puck. Thornton is in a similar situation but to a lesser extent...he's got another all-star in Murray with him.

Thornton is also only 24...but I think he'll have more of an impact on this league than Sundin will. I pick Thornton.

benji 03-09-2004 10:26 PM

Thornton for sure.

You think Thornton is better because Sundin has points because he doesn't have as good players around him as Thornton :dunno: Worst logic ever.

Well Yannic Perreault has more NHL experience than Sidney Crosby and has scored more points in the NHL this year than Sidney Crosby, but ya know what......I'd still take Sidney Crosby.

As for Thornton vs Sundin, the one thing people forget is Thornton is still very young. I mean at a similiar age, what was Mats Sundin like. Sundin at 24 years old was considered a flake, and anything but a team player. I mean Quebec was happy to ship him out.
So at the same point in his career, Thornton is miles and miles ahead of Sundin. As for this particular year, I might be inclined to say Sundin, but overall without a doubt, I would say Thornton.

BTW, anybody who thinks the leafs wouldn't trade Sundin for Thornton should really lay off the pipe.
