Nice trade. Rachunek is a great foundation for the new blue line.

This is a good deal for both teams. Considering the youth movement, a great trade for Sather. Rachunek is a quality young defenseman with a lot of NHL experience.

Apparently, OTT couldn't get EDM to give up Jason Smith which was the first target.

Bluenote13 03-09-2004 01:03 PM

Well, I like Rachunek alot as long as he can stay off the IR.

I don't know much about Giroux, looks like a big, lanky offensive Center/LW from the Q:
http://www.ottawasenators.com/players/0304/giroux_e.aro

Good deal for both squads, i liked DeVries, one of the only reliable D-men we've had the last 7 years.

Never been impressed with Karel

and the other kid isn't really anything to get excited about in my humble opinion.

Personally I thought we could have gotten a better package than that.

And while most of his deals have been very positive, getting Sandy McArthy back was a pathetic move.

Come on, Sandy will only help us get a better shot at #4 overall, he's only gonna be here for 13 games, does it matter?

Come on dude. Who else do you propose take all these open spots we'll have by the end of the day? We need bodies.

Bluenote13 03-09-2004 01:20 PM

Rachunek is a better version of Poti - so ...does that mean...Poti...maybe...gets...TRADED???

I wish.....

Rachunek is a signifigantly better defensive player than Poti. He's a +64 for his NHL career.

+64 playing for Ottawa is different than saying he's a +64 for the Rangers :p

I like Rachunek, alot more than Poti, i just don't know what he'll be on our team. He's been on the IR every year he's played, thats not a good sign. Ottawa fans seem torn - some liked him alot, some thought he took nights off. It'll be interesting to see how Karel plays in reaction to now being a guy who's counted on more, as to being down the depth chart on a stacked Sens defense.

The Mars Volchenkov 03-09-2004 01:38 PM

I love Rachunek. I believe he's a future #2 defenseman in this league. He's just been stuck in Jacques martin's doghouse.

LiquidClown 03-09-2004 01:46 PM

Eh, not a big fan of this trade, Rachunek never seems to be all there. Yeah he's got a nice plus minus but who doesn't on that team?
The prospect well just at first glance (and I pray I'm completely off) doesn't sound all that great he USED to be a 50 goal scorer his numbers have dropped dramatically (maybe the reason ottawa let him go?).

Davisian 03-09-2004 01:53 PM

Rachunek is the big gun in this trade, and we'll either love him or hate him, but I REALLy like the acqusition of Giroux..

He's a very versatile and scrappy forward, who's not really a fighter, but has no problems dropping the gloves if the need arises.. Plays PK and PP..

No top end tools, but everything you'd want out of a supporting cast member of a young core..

Theoren Fan 03-09-2004 02:01 PM

I think it's a great deal.

Greg De Vries didn't want to be here. He wanted to go to a winner and that's what he expected when he signed here...obviously after one season the direction this team has taken has been a drastic 180. As good as Greg can be, I don't want to hold anybody here that doesn't want to be here.

In my opinion it was a move that had to be made, and the return seems pretty nice too. Too bad we couldn't get a pick out of them too.

Bluenote13 03-09-2004 02:26 PM

I think the posters already condemning this trade are ridiculous.

Read this thread, posts by Sens fans who've seen all the players involved actually play:

Yes, adding a 7th rounder from Ottawa, now that puts this deal over the top.

According to this article, Rachunek has had attitude problems:

I agree

even breathing poti and rachunek in the same sentence is totally off base.

i think this is an awesome pickup for a 31 year old defenseman who hinted that he didnt want to be a part of the rebuilding process.

you werent gonna get a first for devries so forget that idea.

Rachenuk could def. help to establish a young nucleus of defenseman.

some people look and say "how he could not do good on ottawa". i look and say "he made one of the best teams in hockey and was a contributer".

i think some people ARE seriously setting their sights a little too high this deadline and expecting everything to bring back a first round pick.
