I say the Rangers secretly tell Umberger that if he signs with them after June 1st, they'll guarantee him a hefty signing bonus.

This way, if we don't sign him by June 1st, we get the 46th pick in the draft, plus we sign Umberger after he becomes a FA.

So we get the 46th pick AND Umberger.

:)

And what if someone offers him a larger signing bonus? I would rather get him under contract now

NHL counsel Bill Daly has told The Post that as long as no prior agreement exists between the team and the player to circumvent the collective-bargaining agreement by conspiring to defer a signing, the Blueshirts would indeed be eligible to receive the pick even if they were to sign Umberger after June 2.
That "hefty" signing bonus would look very suspicious in the eyes of the NHL legal team.

Indeed. I say sign him before he can walk and be done with it. We already have a glut of picks for the upcoming draft.

yeah that's a smart plan, let's have him use our facilities, show something for our farm team, raise his value and then watch him sign elsewhere.

Because that 46th overall pick would sure be the make or break for this organization.

Could you get the player and the pick? sure, but its a risky move that could haunt you if it doesnt work.

If RJ goes onto be a 25 goal, 60 point player it's gonna look very foolish to only have a mid second round pick to show for him, especially over a couple of hundred thousand dollars, especially on a team that has paid what it has over the years.

Don't blow it glen, get him signed like you were going to. Dont try to get cute with the moves, don't overplay your hand, just get him signed. if it works that's great, if it doesn't, than you at least took a shot on a kid who some potential.

I have an odd feeling this is what is happening..... Sather is sly like that at times remember the Quintal deal to Chicago? Loopholes

Edge 03-11-2004 05:25 PM

wouldn't surprise me but personally i'd rather not take the risk and more importantly get this kid into some games as there is still a chance to get him into 20 plus games and see what he needs to work on over the summer.
