Sundin Wanted To Come To MTL (or NY) Over Vancouver?

Steve Simmons in the Toronto Sun...

That isn't all bad ... One more Sundin truth: His agent contacted the Rangers and Montreal in a last-ditch effort to avoid signing in Vancouver. When neither responded, he moved West
Makes sense, we never had the cap space to do it, but it is an interesting little sidebar to history if true.

ReVeuF 02-23-2009 01:29 PM

It took too long for him to decide, when Gainey choose Lang it was over for him.

Kirk Muller 02-23-2009 01:32 PM

I have a feeling the "avoid" signing in Vancouver is wrong wording. He probably wanted to see what Montreal and New York could do financially and when neither responded because they were in cap hell, he decided out West.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Oh no, wait....Canucks fans are gonna be flaming everything on the main board.

Even if the above "avoid" is true, I think he made no secret of the fact that he preferred an Eastern travel schedule. I wouldn't take it personally as a 'Nucks fan. Given recent events, the Nucks are the best of the three teams ;)

Kriss E 02-23-2009 01:38 PM

Yea. I don't buy it.

number 11 02-23-2009 01:41 PM

good. he took too long to decide and gainey had already moved on.

giovanni 02-23-2009 01:41 PM

If he wanted montreal or the the rangers, i think that he should have signed ealier.

Dutchy 02-23-2009 01:42 PM

If this is true, he's a moron. Or the worst poker player ever.

Haddock 02-23-2009 01:43 PM

Sundin is a greedy loser.

Gainey said quite clearly that when he signed Lang, it was moving on.

...what was he supposed to say? "Yeah, we could have had him, but we didn't return the call."

That would be excessively bad form.

maci4life 02-23-2009 01:53 PM

sundin wanted rangers first, they were trying to clear up cap space and sundin was delaying in hopes that they would have room. in the meantime mtl could not wait any longer therefore signed lang. Sundin gets burnt on his little gamble and thus settles for vancouver.

thats my theory.

"We had a lot of different things that [agent J. P. Barry] presented to me, but the first option has been Vancouver since we started to look at the different teams. I'm very thankful for the belief the Vancouver organization has had in me as a hockey player," he said yesterday in a conference call from Sweden.
Once again, Steve Simmons is blowing smoke out of his ass.

While quite possibly true.... again, even if it wasn't, he'd say that. Doesn't prove much.

Ever heard a player sign and say "I wanted to go here and there, but christ, the cap is annoying... so Vancouver it is!"

My reaction to this is like Komo's face.

Bitterman 02-23-2009 02:13 PM

Pffft, Sundin blew off Gainey after we traded for negotiating rights at the draft. Sundin was just chasing the dollar and took max dollars in Vancouver rather than taking a bit less to play in New York who were already messed up with the Cap.

Vancouver was obviously his last choice but Montreal certainly wasn't his first or second.
