Who would you rather?

This is completely hypothetical. I kinda just want to see were we all stand as a board on this one.

Who would you rather get?

Pronger or J-bo?

Lupul Carle and a 1st gets us Pronger

Lupul Carle 1st +++ For J-Bo,

(There could be any number of deals for J-BO, but he WILL cost us more then Pronger).

Also, Pronger is signed at 6.25 for this season and next and is a UFA at the end of that

J-BO is not signed.

Opus 03-01-2009 08:40 PM

Other: Jim Dowd.

QFT Jim Dowd saved hockey

TBH I'd rather have J-bo. Age being the large factor. This is depending on what those extra +s are, tho

FlyHigh 03-01-2009 08:50 PM

Damn BU wireless keeps flaking out. I'd prefer Pronger, 3 reasons.

A) Costs less. Lupul, Carle, and a 1st might even be overpayment, but it's better than giving up JVR/Giroux.

B) Increased flexibility. He expires after 09-10, same as Coburn, really alleviates our cap problems.

C) Can eventually be replaced. I'm trying to be cautious of course, but Bourdon, Marshall, Bodrov, and Sbisa all look like guys with NHL potential. If Pronger leaves, we have those 3 and a solid NHL base of Kimmo, Coburn, Sbisa.

And that's not even including the whole physicality/snarl that this team could really use.

ForsbergIsOdin 03-01-2009 08:50 PM

Also keep in mind that Pronger gives us a little more options in this salary cap ****ed world.

FlyHigh, that is twice we posted at the same time, saying the same thing. Wow ha

FlyLife 03-01-2009 08:50 PM

Pronger or neither, JayBo would be the best going forward, but he absolutely kills our cap long term. Unless we are able to work out a short term deal with Jay, which I don't see happening

Haha, no homo.

Although I actually, my friend and I wore the exact same hoodie to the UMass-BU game last night too.

Hmm.

Dig Out Your Soul 03-01-2009 08:59 PM

Pronger for the reasons already stated. It makes more sense.

dbr2 03-01-2009 09:17 PM

Prongs. He could wreak some players.

Jaybo would kill us cap wise.

Gert B Frobe 03-01-2009 09:33 PM

I know Bouwmeester is an extremely good defenseman - he is very big and very fast and makes almost no mistakes. Pronger isn't as fast probably but takes the body more and is far more intimidating. I think Pronger brings more of what the Flyers need, has another year on his deal and will essentially cost less both in players traded and money.

Intangibles lean heavily in favor of Pronger as well - he's won it all and Bouwmeester has never been in the playoffs - not even in juniors.

TheKingPin 03-01-2009 09:37 PM

Not only does pronger contract make more sense, but we would have him all next year too.

bodangleroo28 03-01-2009 10:39 PM

I agree with the reasons for pronger over jbo, but you have to think that if we get jbo hes going to be signed. And he will have a higher resale value then what we pay for him(potentially)

Norm MacDonald 03-01-2009 10:53 PM

Jaybo is the kind of player you make cap room for. I'd rather have a 25 year old rising star for the future of this team.

If the Flyers trade for Bouwmeester and sign him long-term, I'd much rather him.

ShawnTHW 03-01-2009 11:21 PM

Jbo

Cheaper
Younger
Just hitting his prime

Ill take the risk of him resigning with us or not.

Opus 03-01-2009 11:23 PM

JBo = cheaper?

Maybe this year, the jury is still out for next and those years that follow.

Does it really make much of a difference? I'm sure a lot of people (myself included) believe that Timonen is our teams most valuable player. Bouwmeester is comparable to him in about every category.

Imagine having "another Timonen" who is only 25 years old and signed to a long-term contract. Everyone on this board would consider him invaluable to the team. Even if he makes $7M, what he brings to the team would be more than worth the tradeoff of salary lost.

Of course it matters, the cap number and hit matter big time.

This has nothing to do with what JBo brings to the team, it's about the cap.

If you have to trade three roster players for one, and that one eats up 90% of what the three made...and you're already tight to the cap and have to sign others, as well as two goalies...you bet it matters.

If you've read my posts, I would love to add JBo. I've also put on some of my posts that I acknowledge it's a pipe dream...which I really do feel it is.

Readyrock 03-01-2009 11:45 PM

I think that we should acquire Bo Jaymeester.

The Flyers have ~$7.7M committed for several seasons to Lupul and Carle. That's two players whose salaries more than compensate for a Bouwmeester signing.

Like I said, Bouwmeester is the kind of player you make room for since he would be incredibly valuable for the team. Quality >>>> quality especially in a cap world when mediocre defensemen are making millions.

I know, that's the simple math without looking at the big picture, IMO.

Knuble, Upshall and two goalies need to be signed. Where is the money going to come from? If you can move the same two players and bring in Pronger, and save some money that you can re-invest back into the team...you're in better shape, I think.

Knuble can walk. Upshall won't get a very big raise and neither will the goalies (collectively at least). Also, Jones can be dumped and replaced.

Knubles loss will be bigger than some think, IMO. We seriously lack veteran leadership. Pronger would bring that, with less money...while JBo wouldn't.

Those raises, no matter how minimal, will add up. I'd rather keep Knuble and ship out DannyBoy for a 3rd line center and half the cost. That would certainly make fitting a JBo in, much easier.

I'd like to see JBo here, believe me...but I think it's a pipe dream.
