I'm telling you this kid can play, I don't see how he was a frequent scratch during the year. He could easily be in their top 4.

Oceanic39* 03-14-2004 01:01 PM

I really like the defense on the farm right now. Granted, Holmqvist struggled earlier in the year, but he still has the upside of a top-pair 2-way guy.

With Dicaire (great TB training camp, will rebound with stable AHL situation next year), Ranger (who just keeps producing consistently), O'Brien (who's numbers are just sick... though it is the Q) and Greco as puckmovers, and Egener and Smaby as big guys who love to hit and can skate... that's a nice stable of future TB defensemen. Very nice.

petec1978* 03-14-2004 02:49 PM

No reference to token Swiss cheeser "Bling Bling" Heibling?

Its a good thing Svitov is gone... we know what Alex does to Swiss players.

Coleman gets Game 1 nod
The second-year Knights goalie will start in net for Friday's playoff opener
By JIM CRESSMAN -- London Free Press

Gerald Coleman couldn't remember the last time he was in goal for a playoff game. Ryan MacDonald couldn't remember the last time he didn't play one of his team's playoff games.

"It was a tough choice who plays and you've got to be fair to the kids," London Knights coach Dale Hunter said yesterday after the decision was made to go with Coleman in Game 1 of the OHL playoffs.

Good luck to Gerald!!!

WCHA Play-In Game:

Alaska-Anchorage 4
Colorado College 1
-Greco E, 2 PIM, 3 SOG

Season's over for Greco, who had an excellent 2nd half of the year. He should be a key contributer for them next year, especially if Boston signs Stuart.

petec1978* 03-19-2004 11:30 AM

Season's over for Greco
CC isn't going to the NCAA's? I haven't looked at their record in a while, but I thought they had a good shot at getting in earlier this season.

-Pete Choquette

petec1978* 03-19-2004 11:32 AM

USCHO has them ranked #14 I see... so their bubble probably did just burst. Nevermind, I agree.

-Pete Choquette

Oceanic39* 03-19-2004 12:51 PM

They were listed (with the likes of Harvard) among those who needed to win their tournament to get in.

They should have beaten A-A. Their record was far superior.

The London Knights goaltender stopped 36 shots in a 5-0 victory -- his third straight shutout over the Spits -- as the teams opened their OHL Western Conference quarter-final before a sellout of 9,100 at the John Labatt Centre.

WCHA Championship

Minnesota 5
North Dakota 4
-Atherton DNP
-Smaby 1A (SH), E, 1 SOG, 2 PIM

GREAT game to watch. Back and forth and high speed. Smaby is an animal. A little bigger and faster than Sarich, and loves to hit. Good balance. A lot to learn hockey sense-wise, but that's expected from a true freshman. Mean SOB. His assist came SH when he knocked a guy off the puck against the boards, then knocked the puck away from a MN player who had come over to help. Puck went to Parise, who kicked it ahead and they get a SH goal to tie it at 4. Smaby earned some praise from the Minnesota PBP crew: "Smaby's about 6-5 but skates like he's 5-10." They also complimented one of his hits on a sequence in which he was penalized. Guy came around the net to set a pick and Smaby knocked him on his chest, then attacked the puck carrier and hit him into the boards. He was penalized for knocking the guy down who set the pick. There was another sequence where he was chasing a guy behind his net and the smaller forward stopped and went the other way and Smaby did the same, staying right with him. You don't see that kind of agility from big men. Minnesota's first goal came on the PP and Smaby was in the middle of it. Puck came from right wing to two forwards in front of the net. Smaby was the only UND player there. He met the first guy when the puck did and lifted his stick, but the puck went through to the 2nd forward, who had an open net to shoot at. I don't think Smaby saw the 2nd guy. Only a few sequences in which he got caught out of position. This guy loves to hit and he seems to be used a lot. No PP time, but on the ice for the first shift after a PP.

ECAC Championship:

Harvard 4
Clarkson 2
-Packard 1G (EN), 3 SOG, +1
-Harvard advances to the NCAAs. Projected as a 4-seed. Speculated to play BC in first round.

Hockey East:

Maine 2
UMass 1 (2 OT)
-Toffey DNP
-UMass season probably done

Tuesday Night:
Great night for Boutin.

@Quebec 2
-Boutin W, 38/40, 1st Star

“There were two factors that made the difference,” said P.E.I. coach Alain Vigneault. “(Jonathan Boutin) in goal, especially in the first. They threw everything at us and he held the fort. And our speciality units tonight, whether it be penalty killing or power play.”

Boutin, steady but overshadowed by Filiatrault in the first two games, turned in an outstanding performance, stopping 38 shots, 29 over the opening 40 minutes and 17 in the first.

“In the playoffs you need good goaltending and we got great goaltending tonight,” said Vigneault.
-PEI leads series 2-1

@London 5
Windsor 1
-Coleman W, 22/23
-As Douggy mentioned in the other thread, though Hunter was pleased with Coleman's game, MacDonald will start game 4. Also, Lightning "almost-draft pick" Ivan Khumutov got his first in the playoffs for London. He had 6 goals in the final 12 regular season games.
