Flyers Nullify McLaren Trade

We get our 6th back!

The Philadelphia Flyers said Friday they have nullified the trade on March 4 with the San Jose Sharks in which they acquired defenseman Kyle McLaren in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. McLaren did not pass his physical, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

McLaren, a 31-year-old who has played more than 700 NHL games, was to be assigned to the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyersí American Hockey League affiliate.

McLaren has no goals, 6 assists and 17 penalty minutes in 17 games this season with San Jose's AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks. He sustained a hand injury in December.

"Kyle has been very professional about his situation this season," Sharks GM Doug Wilson said in a statement. "From the beginning of the year, we made a commitment to Kyle to find an opportunity for him to play in the National Hockey League. Unfortunately, this deal didnít work out but Kyle will return to the organization and work towards the full recovery of his hand.

In 719 career NHL games with San Jose and the Boston Bruins over 12 seasons (1995-96 to 2007-08), the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder has 46 goals and 161 assists for 207 points and 671 penalty minutes. In 70 career playoff games, he has 1 goal and 13 assists for 14 points and 78 penalty minutes.

So we get the pick back but he still plays for the Phantoms? Why doesn't he go back to Worcester?

McLaren goes back to the Sharks, the 6th pick back to the Flyers.

Deal is void.

It won't be there long, but on shop.nhl.com, you can get a customized McLaren Flyers jersey (white, black or orange). They gave him No. 4:shakehead

GKJ 03-07-2009 01:42 AM

He wore #4 with the Sharks, that's probably why they have it like that. If he came up, he probably would have worn #8.

Murphy7 03-07-2009 02:49 AM

In this era, with computers and all, it's just a shame that Barry Ashbee's retired number is available on a Kyle McLaren Flyers jersey. They block customizations that they do not approve of, but will sell a jersey that cannot exist.

Because this trade didn't pan out for reasons out of our control, would the league allow us to make a waiver claim?

Probably wishful thinking.

GKJ 03-07-2009 08:52 AM

You can make a waiver claim at any time if someone is on waivers.

That's what I thought, but then I thought I came across something different that claims made by playoff teams needed to be made by a certain date if you wanted to use the player in the playoffs.

Does this make sense?

Yes, they wouldn't be able to play in the playoffs. They have to be on your team by the trade deadline (that's why guys were waived the day before). It might make some sense to have an absolved waiver claim, but then the NHL could say "you had all season to resolve this, and you lost a guy on waivers to boot."

Comes back to the organizational depth I've been talking about all season :sarcasm:

I thought I read that.

We have depth. Think Luca!

I'm actually a little concerned they throw him into playoff games. Nothing against him, but that's a whole other animal. He is progressing quite nicely since they sent him to the WHL.

captainpaxil 03-07-2009 12:10 PM

maybe i read this deal wrong but i thought they purposely acquired a player on ir so that the flyers coud go 2.5 mil over the cap. if that was the cae then this means they were making room for a deal that didnt happen
