New rules look to curb fighting

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hocke...m-fights_N.htm

don't think I'm a fan of less fights.

Staals Eye 03-11-2009 02:43 PM

bye bye bobby.....

KotsyJr 03-11-2009 02:44 PM

The fighting everyone after a clean check thing is getting ridiculous. Would be nice to fix that at least.

silverfish 03-11-2009 02:46 PM

These aren't official so nothing is true yet.

DontStepanMe 03-11-2009 02:48 PM

If anybody knows Dagoon personally I would check up on him. He might have a coronary.

Fitzy 03-11-2009 02:51 PM

Hopefully this means less 2-minutes-a-night trash on every team.

NYRFAN218 03-11-2009 02:54 PM

I don't like the rule about the instigator after a clean hit. It's a good idea but your leaving the clean hit discretion up to the refs. What happens if a guy gets hit from behind but the refs thinks it's a clean hit? Your going to get an extra 2 for instigating but they don't get one for a hit from behind?

FLYLine24 03-11-2009 02:55 PM

Instigator rule has been horrible and they want it called more often...unbelievable.

That's my biggest problem. Don't have a problem with guys like Colton who work hard to be legit contributors outside of the pugilism.

+1...thats the thing that pisses me off the most a scuffle or fight after every good hard hit

I prefer those fights greatly to the fights which happen for absolutely no reason.

and why don't they just penalize the take-down after a fight?

TomLaidlaw 03-11-2009 04:04 PM

The wussification of the NHL continues. They should be getting rid of the instigator penalty not expanding on it. The NHLPA has to agree to this before it is passed correct?

Fletch 03-11-2009 04:20 PM

allstar...

you get pissed off after scuffles from a hard hit? To each his own, I guess. That's a part of the game I enjoy - where the players show emotion and stick up for one another. I rather not leave it in the hands of the refs - too many will think it's fair game out there and the stars of the league will get hurt one by one. Ask any current or former star their thoughts on the issue.

Well, most of the time those are called. I know you are worried about the extreme cases but what I think it's a good trade off. You want to fight a guy for playing within the rules? Fine, but you're sitting an extra 2. No rule is perfect, it will always have a drawback. The question is if the game will be better if they reduce the amount of fights started after good plays.

Personally, I'd rather see a hard hit in retaliation for a hard hit. A fight is exciting, but the games filled with non stop hitting are the best.

Agreed 100%. Enough is enough. You can't hit someone anymore without some moron jumping you.

And staged fights are ********.

I agree with the whole clean hits thing. But what exactly is a staged fight? I dont get it. How does one determine if a fight is staged?

Basically if it happens right at the face-off.

Those are dumb.

Bluenote13 03-11-2009 05:26 PM

I'm pretty sure fighting in the NHL will disappear in my lifetime, so enjoy while you still can.

Agreed- Start by altering the instigator, so players like Ruutu will have to answer the bell after they take runs at people.

This change will basically mean that people like rutuu can go run people all day and now you would be pretty much guaranteed to be down a man for trying to beat the **** out of him.

vipernsx 03-11-2009 05:51 PM

I think fighting will reduce itself. No one wants to break a hand or hurt themselves in some other way which causes them to not be able to play. Look at Paul Mara recently. No one wants to split their skull open on the ice because there helmet is off and end their career or worse. Fighting will reduce itself yet not disappear completely. When guys have a tool in their hands that can be used as a weapon which they're often swinging at each other already, you need to know that if you use it to hurt someone that another guy may plant his fist in your face. Many guys aren't so tough when they don't have a weapon to back it up, be it a bat, a knife, a gun, or a hockey stick. IMO the only reason why it hasn't reduced itself already is because there still exists guys like Renney who think they need to dress a pugilist every night to maintain some kind of physical presence, even when the opposition doesn't have one. Fighting is a part of hockey and shouldn't be removed buy to have a one dimensional player who can do nothing else but, isn't necessary for the success of this sport. I will be the first to applaud Orr for dropping Fedoruk but the reality is, the game prior the Rangers should have started taking runs at Phillies top guys in retaliation or someone should have stepped to Fedoruk and put an end to it then. On the other side, to have a guy like Orr giving Crosby facials and bumps at the end of a shift or play is pathetic goon play and isn't good for hockey.
