Skate Tongues

It's common to see pros fold down the tongue of the skate. I was wondering how you do this and keep the skate tight.

Gunnar Stahl 30 03-13-2009 03:18 PM

colin white does this. he tapes around his ankle. he ties all of the laces, he just folds the tongue down and tapes around his ankle. this picture is from last year im pretty sure. he is wearing the one90s now he has one95s

that's what i'm talkin about
it looks like he's using electrical tape lol

I'm not exactly sure how they do it, but pros usually have custom made over-sized tongues that make it easier.

I would guess it takes a lot of bending to train the tongue to stay down.

I think it's just coloured shinpad tape.

kyle evs48 03-13-2009 03:54 PM

I'm gonna try taping the tongue down and letting that sit overnight.

SyracuseBulldogs* 03-13-2009 04:06 PM

When I get new skates I always tie the laces over the folded tongue when I am not wearing them until they get broken in this way. I have never seen anyone fold them like Colin White

That is exactly what I do. Any other way is stupid IMO LOL

If you're used to the shin pad being on top of the tongue it's going to feel wierd when you try tongues out for the first few times. I used to have the shin pad over the top but a couple years ago I switched and it is much more comfortable for me on the ice. I don't make it a point to have the tongues pushed down like these cool guys

Seems like a pretty awful reason to do it. I'm assuming White does that to get additional protection on the top of his foot for blocking shots and what not.

Doesn't Pronger do something similar?

I've never even thought of that. It doesn't seem like it would do a whole lot, but hey its better than not having the extra little bit there right?

I am a sock and shin guards under the tongue, tongue laced all the way up guy. Its just what I've always done and am used to. For the OP, if you think its cool and want to then what the hell, why not. But if you are doing it because you think others will think its cool then I think its a total waste of time. I think thats all I think I can think about for now.

There have been threads on the tongue issue alone. Suffice it to say that people think the look you like is stupid too.

I didn't call anyone stupid. I said I think the look is stupid "IN MY OPINION" and followed that up with a hearty LOL.

White & Pronger have an extra piece of padding that is coming off of the shin pad. It is not part of the skate that you are seeing. Ovie's is part of the skate (tongue) & many players do fold the tongues over. D'men especially like to have some protection over the laces for blocking shots

raganblink 03-14-2009 01:52 PM

I skate tounges out....

What it does compared to tounges in is it allows you more flexiabiltiy around the ankle and imo gives myself more agility. It makes the skate feel more like a track shoe instead of a boot.

You can do it with normal sized tounges, it just looks cooler if you have over-sized tounges.

What I do is I lace all the way up with 132's in a size 11 skate and than wrap around the back, but when I come in the front I put it as low as I can on the boot with the rest of the laces, that way the tounge can go further down.

Than for about 10 times of playing you need to work at getting the tounge down (by folding the tounge over itself) as far as it will go. Keep doing this and over time it will stay that way, even after you take them off. It just makes it more comfortable and more flexible imo.

Takes a while to get the tounges the way I wanted them (rolling with one95s) but its worth it imo. To help speed up process you can use clear tape, howver it feels weird imo.

A lot of pros request extra long tongues. That's why the look is so exaggerated.
