Higgins to the Islanders

I never make these trade proposals, but with Higgins an RFA at the end of the year, and the Habs prospects coming up. Higgins may be expendable. I'm sure the Habs will try to sign him, but if the sides are too far apart, they may be willing to trade him. Since the Islanders have a lot of cap space and he's a hometown boy, i'm sure they would be interested.

Would the Isles do..

Islanders: Chris Higgins

Canadiens: Islander 2nd round pick 2009 (30-35 range) + mid range prospect

Or maybe just drop the mid range prospect and get the Islanders "second" first round pick (27-30 overall) aquired from the Senators.

grabo84 03-16-2009 03:28 PM

This is pretty fair. I don't think Gainey should trade Higgins for futures though.

AlMo 03-16-2009 03:33 PM

Higgins will be likely be used as a trading chip in a bigger trade *ahem*Lecavalier*ahem*

How is a career 20 goal, 40 point 2nd/3rd liner that has had injury problems going to fetch a 1st round pick?

You could say the same thing about Campoli and Comrie. Higgins is better than those two guys put together if you ask me, and they got the same first plus a useful player in McAmmond.

not really...i think a late first for camp was a lil much bc thats what that trade amounts too, even though comrie is a far better offensive player than mcammond. but a dman who moves the puck like he does isnt something you get for a 3rd. and considering hes around 35-40 pts a yr on the backend, hes worth more than higgins 40 pts playing fwd, IMO. also younger and signed 2 more yrs much cheaper.

edit: i was using 40 pts bc it was stated in previous post. i cant search stats at work bc everything but hf is blocked and i dont have exact #s to go on...

Campoli was rated higher by Ottawa for the purposes of that trade IIRC, so I'm not sure if that comparison works.

Last year Higgins had 27 goals and 25 assists for 52 points...Ya he's probably a 2nd/3rd liner but he's still young and has potential to be a 30 goal guy in his career. He's struggling this year because of injuries, but he's still a good player.

Besides, at the 27-30 range aren't you hoping to get a 2nd liner anyways?? Chances are that you won't land a 1st liner at that range so the whole "Chris Higgins isn't worth a 1st rounder" is a little vague. Their second rounder will probably be between 31 and 33 anyways...but you woulden't have said anything if I would have just left it at "the Islanders 2nd rounder".

grabo84 03-16-2009 03:53 PM

I think you guys are underrating Higgins a bit. This guy is one of Montreal's most dangerous players, plus he's from NY state. I think a lot of teams would be interested if he was available, which he probably isn't (HF proposals aside).

no thanks. i'll take komisarek july 1st though:handclap:

Komisarek won't be worth what you'll have to pay him, if you ask me.

let the Islanders fans/management find that out!I wouldn't give him more then 4.5 a year

Patty Roy 03-16-2009 04:02 PM

The Habs do have young players coming up, but they are being brought in to replace UFA's like Kovalev, Dandeneault, the recently traded Begin and possibly Tanguay.

I'm not against trading Higgins, but i dont have any interest in dealing him for a 2nd round pick and some B prospect.

Yeah, thats about my limit. I'd give him a bit more on a shorter term, but not long term.

Hipster Doofus 03-16-2009 04:36 PM

What is it meant by midrange? I'd be interested in that deal depending on your definition of midrange prospect.

Would Toronto's 2nd and Mark Katic be close to value? Katic is undersized but gifted with great wheels and hockey sense. He's developed nicely and could compete for a spot within a few years after some seasoning in the AHL. Not sure if Monteal wants someone who can step in right away as well.

BLONG7 03-16-2009 04:42 PM

Would the Isles and Habs be good trading partners on draft day? What if the Isles get the 1st overall? Higgins, Komi ++ for the 1st overall?

And overrating draft picks - any drafts picks. (As usual.)

"Third-line" wingers do not put up 27 goal seasons. Perhaps in fantasy or on all-star teams. Not NHL teams.

Higgins had 27 goals and 52 points last season...this is an off year for basically the entire team, although Higgins was out for about 30 games.

Nizdizzle 03-16-2009 05:38 PM

I'd give up one of the 2nd rounders + 3rd or something from Leafs to get Higgins, steal for the Islanders here.

Well Garth Snow is an idiot, he'll probably trade down again, which honestly I hope doesn't happen since I'd really like to see the Isles succeed again.

Watsatheo 03-16-2009 05:44 PM

Buy high, sell low.

A 27 goal season, one of them. It's still not 30 goals and yes, Chris Higgins is a 2nd line fill-in when he's hot, but he's inconsistent and the most consistent, well-developed aspect of his game is his defensive ability. Hell, Taylor Pyatt has a 23 goal season on his resume, it's really not that impressive. Mike Peca had a 27 goal season to his resume as well, the difference is he was a 1st liner and a catalyst for his team all the way to the Cup finals.

He's 25, close to 26 years old with a career high of 52 points. I think it's safe to say that if you're throwing away a first rounder on a 50 point player that might only be around for a couple of seasons you're probably not going to have a job as a GM for very long, if you've ever had one at all (which I'm almost positive you haven't).

This isn't overrating draft picks this is trying to intelligently manage your assets and acquiring the right ones. Sure, if you think you're close and Higgins is going to be one of your final pieces to shore up some holes, then throw a 1st rounder Montreal's way. But when you're at the bottom of the barrel, without any real prospects beyond Okposo and Bailey to speak of (for being so terrible, NYI has an equally bare cupboard on top of it... Ness, Toews, Niemi, etc. are pretty mediocre)... you should keep that 1st rounder, NYI needs a swing at a home run much more than a glorified 40 point grinder. I appreciate Higgins' game, but MTL fans have overrated him for quite some time, some even expected him to turn into a 40 goal scorer!
