Best position?

I am a new member and was curious as to what the posters on here thought?

What position beneifts the most from the speediest skaters? Meaning for my adult league team should we put our fastest skaters at center, wing or on D? What do your teams do?

Thanks.

A good defenseman with great wheels is very effective, more so than a forward with great wheels.

I think there is more to positioning than just speed. But I would probably have them at wing or center if they have enough endurance having to go net to net on each rush

Center. They have to get back on D as well as play offense. Fast D are great if you can, but slower D can just hang back more to compensate in a men's league game.

Besides, the only point of a fast D is to counter fast forwards. So if the other team has slow D, the fast guys can get by them playing up.

It's a tricky question since once you got speed, every position become so more easy to play. A fast d-men will be able to pinch and come back to cover himself, a fast winger will put a lot of pressure on defense, help his defensive play and give him many more scoring chance. As center, speed is crucial to let you come back and help your defense and avoid odd-man rushes.

Speed never hurts, and is possibly a top priority for each position other than goalie (where it is still very important), but the forwards are the least positional- they cannot always make up for mediocre speed in other ways.

So I would say forward, probably a winger, all other attributes being more or less equal.

But if your fastest player is also your best player by a significant margin, best passer, strongest on the puck etc. then you probably want him in a more core position, D or centre.

your best skaters should play defense. the "speediest" should play center because they have to cover the most ice

The best skaters usually play Defense.
The fastest skaters usually play Wing.
The guy with the most stamina plays Center.
:)

Speed is good at all positions, they all have their benefits.

Wing is good because your wings are usually your main forecheckers and will usually be the guys who have the best chance at getting a breakaway since they usually stay high in the D zone.

Either way all players have to backcheck, so saying center for speed to me is wrong. A fast wing can easily come back and cover for a slower center until the center reaches the defensive zone. A center just needs to have very good stamina because of all of the skating he has to do. You could have a very fast center who tires out quickly and he's useless. If you notice even in the NHL most of your quickest guys are wings.

Defensemen are usually the best skaters because they need to go from backwards to forwards and side to side and every other direction quickly and fluidly. One stumble and a guy is by you. You don't have to be the fastest guy, but you need to be able to move and react faster and better than all the other guys.

Anyway for speed, Wing gets my vote.

Speed is great for any player to have.
I think if you're trying to decide what position someone should play you may want to focus on other aspects of their game besides speed such ass shooting, stick handling, toughness, ability to read plays

to me thats a better way to decide what position a player will play.
