Last Game: Dec 6, 2002 - Habs 6, Avalanche 7

Preview:

OK, OK... I'm sure you all watched our last game (i did at 3am in the morning...). One thing is sure, We are ready for the playoffs. And tonight's game will be another test. The Avs, are another contender and top caliber team in the NHL. Even without Roy and most of the season without Forsberg, they played inspired hockey turned towards the offense. With the likes of Kariya, Hejduk, Selanne, Blake or Sakic, how could you go wrong? Scary you say? nah, we faced worst, and recently.
Our habs have nothing to fear if they play a full 60 mn's game like they did saturday night. Batman and Robin did shut down sundin's line, Koivu, Perreault and rejuvinated Richard "you've been Zednified" Zednik played like a remarkable 1rst top line. The addition of kovalev on the second line ( at first not a good idea from my point of view) adds tons of space to Ryder and Ribeiro (who plays 100 times better when he had some).
Julien can now rest his Veterans (Like Juneau and Dackell) for the playoffs. Bulis, Souray and Sundstrom, out with injuries, need space in the line up and Julien will have much to do to accomodate all his players.

News, Quotes and Notes:

. Colorado is first in the northwest division with 93 points, 3 points away from Detroit and the first Place on top of the western Conference.
. Forsberg, out with a groin injury, joined the team for their Road trip.
. Sakic took over and is doing a great job out there as always with 31 goals , 50 assists in 70 games.
. With the recent Bertuzzi/Moore incident (if we can call it that), Colorado is a little shaken up.
. I'll take this brief moment to wish the best recovery to Moore, and the best luck to the Avs' fan for the playoffs.
. Alex tanguay is out for 2-3 weeks with a knee injury. Hinote too with a probable dislocated shoulder. Bob Boughner is on IR since february 24th.
. Salo had a win in his first game with 26 saves. Nevertheless, Colorado's forum reports that he was quite nervous and didn't look so impressive
. Recent reports from Toronto suggest that leafs' fans still don't understand what happened to them on saturday.
. Can't stop loving "Batman and robin"'s line with Alfred being in their shadow (aka Jason Ward, obscure hero in last game, Good job Jason !).
. Zednik! Zednik! Zednik!
. Koivu! Koivu! Koivu! (i guess nobody thinks he's a bad captain anymore ;) , and Ribs looks like a better player since the "altercation", don't you think?)
. About last Avs' game coach Granato said:
``The new guys have brought exactly what we thought they would. They've added a lot of enthusiam to our lineup. They've added depth and they've added a physical presence.''.
. About our last game:
``The intensity was really high,'' Perreault said. ``We're trying to improve our ranking. The Leafs are one of the top teams in the league and it was a big challenge for us. To be able to show that we can play.''
. Can we get better ? well yes; Bulis and Sundstrom are back in tonight's line up. Which makes Claude Julien to rearrange his lines.
. Souray is closing in on a return as we could be seeing him as soon as Friday. (Souray would be 1 week ahead of schedule)

Recap and quotes from last year

The Colorado Avalanche are glad Radim Vrbata didn't follow his first instinct when he got the puck in overtime.

Vrbata looked to pass, but with his teammates covered he decided to shoot and scored a power-play goal 1:52 into the extra period as the Colorado Avalanche snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.

``I was just waiting for someone to get open and with a four-on-three advantage, you have a little bit more time to find someone,'' Vrbata said. ``They played everyone well and when nobody was open I took the shot.''

Colorado's Steven Reinprecht had tied the game in final two minutes of regulation, and Joe Sakic added two goals, Nos. 498 and 499 of his career, and added two assists.

Milan Hejduk had a goal and an assist on the seventh anniversary of the trade that sent goaltender Patrick Roy along with Mike Keane to Colorado in exchange for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky and Andre Kovalenko.

Doug Gilmour had a goal and two assists for Montreal, which is winless in its last four games and winless in six games played in Denver (0-4-1-1).

Montreal had killed seven previous power plays when Saku Koivu was sent off for slashing at the end of regulation. The power play carried over into overtime.

Vrbata sent a shot through a crowded crease and past Canadiens goaltender Jose Theodore.

``We found a way to win,'' Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. ``There were great chances on both sides, but the bottom line was that we got the tying goal late in the game and scored on the power play.''

In the final minutes of regulation, the Avalanche pulled Roy in favor of a sixth skater, and Reinprecht poked the puck under Theodore's glove with 1:16 remaining.

``It was a great decision by Bob (Hartley) to pull me in and put a sixth guy on the ice,'' Roy said. ``And Rhino scored a big goal for us.''

Gilmour scored on a shot off Randy McKay's leg a minute earlier to give Montreal a 6-5 lead.

Sakic sent a wrist shot past Theodore at 6:41 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5.

``You better win the game when you score six goals on Patrick Roy, and we didn't,'' Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. ``We moved the puck well and did a great job of killing penalties and still couldn't win.''

Montreal scored four goals on 11 shots in the second period to take a 5-4 lead.

Andreas Dackell and Mike Ribero scored 24 seconds apart to put the Canadiens ahead 3-2, but Dean McAmmond tied it at 3-all at 6:15 on his first goal with Colorado.

Montreal regained the lead at 7:21 when Chad Kilger flipped the puck over Roy's left shoulder, but Hejduk matched it with a wraparound goal at 13:16. The Canadiens took the lead on Stephane Quintal's one-timer, off a pass from Joe Juneau, at 16:29.

``It looked like my goal would turn things for a little bit, but they came back,'' Quintal said. ``You make a little mistake and guys like Sakic, Hejduk, Forsberg are going to put the puck in the net''

The Avalanche led 2-1 after one period on Skoula's second goal of the year. Skoula sent a slap shot from the slot through a screen past Theodore.

Sakic and Martin Skoula had first-period goals to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. Andrei Markov tied it with a power-play goal at 17:14, converting a pass fromGilmour.

Great game day thread as always. Don't forget, you can always listen to the game in English on CJAD. I find they're better than Team 990.

Really looking forward to this one.

Hope to see Bulis and Sundstrom fit back in nicely and hopefully continue the role we have been on. A good measuring stick for the team tonite.

As per usual Catala... great thread!!! i really love to read them.... to be honest being a fan from England i only get to catch 10+ games a month live on TV and during the winter manage to catch a few games at the Bell... so most of my game news and previews come from habs sites... Your by far the best one i read... indepth, accurate and a pleasure to read.... so once again thanks!!

As for the game... i'm saying it will be tight... 2-1 score to whom to close to say... I'm gonna say Kovalev wont score as every time i've said he would he hasn't so lets try some reverse psycology!!!!!

Theo once again shows us why he is back to that Vezina winning form... and the fans have another memorable night at the Bell Centre.... Go habs and lets keep up this intensity and play...

Yes, a fantastic GDT once again.

If you guys are looking for some more info, I was surfing on the Avs web site, and they have a reall nice page dedicated to tonight's game notes. Tons and Tons of infos.

There's plenty of stuff on your GDT, Catala, but you might want to check it out anyway. Really interesting.

Great GDT Catala....

Should be a good one tonight. It's going to be a nice tonight for the boys. The Avs are one of the best teams in the league and probably the best road team in the league, losing only 4 games in regulation.

I'm happy that Bulis is back tonight, he brings so many little things to this team. Another dimension. Should be interesting to see Bulis play with Dowd and Ryder, they are going to be fiesty!

Some good things about tonight though...no Forsberg or Tanguay :D

NHLcrazy 03-16-2004 03:12 PM

You guys remember last year's game against them? that was something

even though we lost 7-6 in ot...

Hyped 03-16-2004 03:15 PM

I'll say a 3-3 tie.

Habs: Kovalev (2), Koivu

Avs: Sakic, Blake, Konowalchuk

Burnaby_Joe* 03-16-2004 03:15 PM

Awesome thread man. This should be an awesome game. We have a few injuries, but so does Montreal? Forsberg is on the trip so it wouldn't surprise me if he plays tonight, but we'll have to wait and see.
