Banning Leafs jerseys at the Corel Centre?

http://ottawa.cbc.ca/regional/servle...erseys20040316

Quote:

OTTAWA - Maple Leaf fans beware. Ottawa councillors want to ban your hockey sweaters from the Corel Centre.

Coun. Rick Chiarelli wants the Senators' home rink to be a Senators-paraphernalia-only zone.

Because of the budget-cutting exercies, there's been nothing but negative news coming out of city council committee meetings these days.

So, was Tuesday's decision a diverson from it all? Or was it real?

Every councilor on the committee voted in favor of it.

Coun. Chiarelli admits this resolution is meant to lighten the mood of Ottawa citizens. But he says he means every word of this resolution.
Wow, your civic government hard at work. Too bad we don't have a rolleyes smilie here anymore. Fortunately I have my own in the event of such emergencies.

Doesn't matter. The Leafs fans will still out cheer the Sens fans, just like the Candiens fans in the Bell Centre and the Sabres fans in the HSBC, and just like every group of fans in every building other than the XCEL where it was about 51-49%, which I didn't mind. They didn't deserve to lose their team in the 90s.

Hellsempire 03-17-2004 12:20 AM

Now that is just plain stupid to ban someones sweater from an arena... It won't happen. That is like saying the Devils at CAA should ban the NYR or the Flyers from wearing their jerseys to the game... Just not going to happen...

BlueBlood17 03-17-2004 12:22 AM

Everyone is obsessed with the Leafs it seems.

Sometimes I think non-Leafs fans are more obsessed with the Leafs then we are. :joker:

The Leafs are just too intimidating for the Ottawas of the World. Ban the Leafs jersey. It won't make a damn bit of difference!

They don't outcheer the habs, not even close. There may be a lot of leaf fans there, but to say there are more is just stupid.

Hellsempire 03-17-2004 12:31 AM

Do we really need another thread about the Habs? The last one was just locked... This thread is between the Senators and the Leafs. NOT the Habs...

OFF TOPIC!

Sotnos 03-17-2004 12:32 AM

No one seems to notice that this is a joke/publicity stunt? :dunno: Not what I'd want my lawmakers wasting time on, but it sounds like it was done in fun (and for charity).

did you even pay attention on Saturday night? It was a blue and white wave and the Habs fans were D-R-O-W-N-E-D!!!!!! O-U-T!!!!!!! by the Leafs faithful, JUST LIKE IN EVERY OTHER BUILDING (save 1)

Bicycle Repairman 03-17-2004 12:35 AM

Your typical municipal government is run by the dim-bulb lesser lights of the political world. Not at all like the respected, towering intellects which populate our National governments.

I can't get in a huff about this issue either way.

Easy there, cowboy.

PaulPosition 03-17-2004 12:39 AM

Yeah, it seems all the money in Canada goes right into the center of universe that is Toronto only to be sunk on train and arena tickets so leafs fans can go and show how much more money and time they can lose in futile things. Oh well... ;)

Porn* 03-17-2004 12:43 AM

you know... if leaf fans would boycott sens game vs. the leafs they wouldn't sell out :joker:

Ottawa is a pretty crap city for hockey :yo: let them do what they want... ignorant chirelli...

Wingboy2999 03-17-2004 01:00 AM

That's HILARIOUS.

That is so true.

They can't even sell out their building.

littleHossa 03-17-2004 01:43 AM

Like we need this stupid bull****, I don't remember being against the Leafs in any of the 3 playoff rounds last year and those games sold well, and there are a lot of other team that sell out the Corel Center besides the Leafs in the regular season.

I can see the headlines on CNN now, "Hockey Team Jersey Impedes Progress". Please, someone confirm that it's just a stupid joke.

PS sup fellow UW goon?

GD|eNSo 03-17-2004 05:33 AM

Haha! I think this is funny. Was it last year, where they would buy Leaf and Hab sweater's from the fans? or was it trade them in for a Sen's one? Anyway's I think they are just kidding ... if not, then some people have real issues up there.

One person out of 15 realizes that this is tongue in cheek. Unbelievable.

Tongue in cheek it was not, my friend. It was in fact a prime example of the anti-leaf bias which so many many people from outside of the country of Toronto have so disgustingly decided to take up. A travesty, I must say. A travesty.

Sens are in the upper echelon attendance wise, at 12th in the league.
So they aren't one of 5 NHL teams to sell out every game . Good of you to call them out on it chief.

It is the plight of our time. When my children begin studying history at school, no longer will they learn about geat injustices in history such as Apartheid. No my friend, they will learn about the greatest injustice of them all, performed by Ottawa Councillors against the scorned Leafs nation, preventing them from wearing whatever apparel they please at the Corel Centre, all for charity. The nerve. Travesty indeed.

This doesn't sound too tongue in cheek to me.

"Coun. Chiarelli admits this resolution is meant to lighten the mood of Ottawa citizens. But he says he means every word of this resolution.

"The senators have been an integral part of the economy in Ottawa, and our civic branding and it's offensive to [have] a bunch of people walking around with Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys when civic pride is on the line."

Chiarelli believes the resolution will pass when the full city council votes on it later this month."

Mayor Bob Chiarelli says, "Certainly it's tongue in cheek. It's meant to create some excitement around the city. We want the Maple Leaf fans in the Corel Centre to realize that the city is behind the Senators."
