Colrado to pay to move up in draft?

Oiler fan here...

Left assume that Colorado gets #3 pick. What do you guys figure it would cost them to move up to get the #1 pick? With Sakic's age showing do you think Colorado is going to try to get the #1 or #2 pick? If Tavares is NHL ready he could have a great rookie campaign playing #2 center.

It would cost too much. I think Duchene would be a great replacement for Sakic down the line. Great two way offensive dynamo with great speed, complete player, and strong.

I would hate for the Canucks to play against Duchene that much though.

I heard the av's are quite high on Duchene.

Yup, and Duchene is a big Avs fan too.

If the Avs get the third pick, they'll gladly take Duchene.

There's no point in the Avs trying to move up when they're virtually guaranteed a Top 3 pick by virtue of their oh-so-awesome talent at achieving mass suckage this year. They've got a lottery pick and could conceivably win Tavares and if not, they've got a real good shot at Duchene.

So why bother wasting prospects they can't afford to waste when they're alerady nicely positioned to get a top-notch junior?

They'd be supremely stupid if they tried.

I hope they pick Cowen or something. Mind you, Cowen could be a real pain to play against, but at least we won't have memories of him scoring on the Canucks like Hedjuk and Sakic does.

I don't know in which universe would the Avs pick Cowen over Duchene at 3 though.

The universe that has Ron Delorme as chief scout for the Avs.:sarcasm:

falconski 04-08-2009 12:28 AM

don't see it happening unless the avs get unlucky in the lottery and drop to 4th, and I still doubt it would happen, the avs are pretty high on duchene

windflare 04-08-2009 12:28 AM

Yeah, the Cowen thing was just a joke. Besides, if they miss Duchene, they still have MSP, Schenn, and Kane to choose from, and all of those could develop into very good players that I would hate to see play against the Canucks. Damn the Avs for tanking it so hard this season.

 Would be funny if he somehow ended up on the wings.

But on topic, if the Avs get the 2nd pick i can see them moving up or down, but not if they get the 3rd.

Holy crap! Right where you guys slot too. That's gonna be a match made in heaven.

CAPiTA 04-08-2009 01:26 AM

The Northwest Hodgson/Duchene rivalry will be one for the ages. Book it.

Red Wings prospect Justin Abdelkader grew up in Michigan as a big time wings fan. Abdelkader and Duchene can help get this rivalry started again! They both have natural hatred for the other team.

Hodgson vs Duchene the next Naslund vs Forsberg

AgentNaslund* 04-08-2009 04:18 AM

If AVs get the number 2 pick who they draft?

Hedman. Always BPA.

what about the Duchene's favorite team is the Avs and the Avs are high like a kite for Duchene?

Pierre Gotye 04-08-2009 05:31 AM

If the Avs have a shot at Hedman, there is no way they'll draft Duchene over him.

They would have to trade down to do so, which might be right for them.

But the presser with the Avalanche isn't so much at forward, it's on past the backline.

They have Liles, and Clark back there. Both are inconsistent or not very good in their own end. No one else is on that roster who I'd want playing for my team. They're awful.

Hedman would be an immediate lift to them.

They need help everywhere even in goal. They're just not that good of a team anymore. I don't think Granato is a good coach, but having Stastny out most of the year didn't help.

Poor decisions with signing Tucker and Raycroft too. That's a GM mistake.

It's pretty well established that it's Tavares -> Hedman -> the rest. It's nice that he's an Avs fan, but that shouldn't factor into management's decision, even if it were someone that is more comparable.

I know for a fact the Islanders will NOT be trading the number 1 pick if they get it. The 2nd most likely team to get the #1 pick is Tampa. The only way they trade down is to swap spots with the Islanders because they want Hedman. Avs will need to win the lottery to draft 1st.

the "Fix" is already in ...Colorado is going to win the draft lotto

Qurpiz 04-08-2009 08:02 AM

My thoughts:

If the Avs get:

1st overall
Tavares, no questions

2nd overall
Hedman. Future cornestone on defense, where ever he'll end up in.

3rd overall
Duchene. Reasons already mentioned

But, if the Avs get 2nd and a team with 3rd willing to overpay for 2nd, I say go for it and take Duchene.

ttam103 04-08-2009 08:07 AM

Duchene getting mentored by Sakic (if he stays a few season)?

That be awesome for him.

That makes sense. The NHL would prefer to have Tavares in a small market in the middle of the Rocky Mountains instead of a huge market like New York.
