Where are they now: NYR 1st Rd Draft picks since 1985

I'm sure you've played this game before, but thought it'd be fun (in that painful stub-your-toe way):

2003 -- Hugh Jessiman
2002 -- None/Lee Falardeau, C 2nd Rd (33rd overall)
2001 -- Dan Blackburn, G
2000 -- None/Filip Novak, D 2nd Rd (64th overall)
1999 -- Jamie Lundmark, C
1999 -- Pavel Brendl, RW
1998 -- Manny Malhotra, C
1997 -- Stefan Cherneski, RW
1996 -- Jeff Brown, D
1995 -- None/Christian Dube, RW 2nd Rd (39th overall)
1994 -- Dan Cloutier, G
1993 -- Niklas Sundstrom, C
1992 -- Peter Ferraro, C-RW
1991 -- Alexei Kovalev, LW
1990 -- Michael Stewart, D
1989 -- Steven Rice, RW
1988 -- None/Troy Mallette, LW 2nd Rd (22nd overall)
1987 -- Jayson More, D
1986 -- Brian Leetch, D

So, where ARE they now? Not trying to disparage the team, b/c I'm not sure other clubs haven't faired similarly, but interesting all the same. If I had the time, it'd be interesting to see how the Rangers' 2nd round picks faired vs their 3rd.

Recently there were a few guys i thought would be good but ended up nowhere - Evgeny Gusakov & Sven Helfenstein. "The Goose" was a pretty impressive player in the Q(Edge's fave) a few years back, and at 6'6 215 looked like he had good hands, but he went back to Russia never to be heard from again. Helfenstein was small, but crafty and was very good at the WJC that year. He'll probably never come over to play the NA game.

Wow...we've never had a first overall pick? EVER?????!!!!!?

Edge 03-19-2004 10:03 PM

nope.

it's always been a ranger trait. Even when we suck, we don't suck enough to get a franchise player to build around so we always get guys wit high upside and high question marks.

Well...not NEVER.
1965 - Andre Veilleux, 1965, 1st overall, New York
A right-winger, Veilleux was chosen first overall in 1965 by the Rangers from the Montreal Jr. B organization but his career never took him even once to the NHL.

Of course - at that point, the draft was completely different. Many players were signed at age by age 14-15 to Junior contracts.
