Two-Year Plan

OK, so I did a little number crunching assuming the cap remains the same next year and then dips to 55M the following year. In Free Agency I propose the Penguins let Guerin, Satan, Fedotenko, Boucher, Gill and Garon walk. I propose they persue Cammalleri and Kotalik and promote Adams, Goligoski and Curry from the minors. Here are my projected line combos with cap hit:

EDIT: Sykora is not resigned and Kennedy takes his place. Dupuis is traded for a pick/prospect and Caputi takes his place. Gonchar signed to a 6 year deal 5 - 4 - 4 - 3 - 1.5 - 1. Lovejoy takes over Scuderi who leaves via free agency.

Forward Lines
Kunitz (3.73) - Crosby (8.7) - Kotalik (2.1)
Cammalleri (4.5) - Malkin (8.7) - Kennedy (.73)
Caputi (.83) - Staal (4) - Cooke (1.2) then Talbot (1.05)
Adams (.6) - Talbot (1.05) then Zigomanis(.7) - Goddard (.75)

Defense
Gonchar (5 then 3.08) - Eaton (2 then 1.25)
Letang (.84 then 2.5) - Orpik (3.75)
Goligoski (1) - Lovejoy (.5)

Goalies
Fleury (5) - Curry (.75)

Spares
Zigomanis (.7) (2009-10 only)

Cap Hit
2009-2010 = 56.42
2010-2011 = 54.21

ThatGuy 04-27-2009 11:46 AM

Isn't the cap like 57M right now?

naustic 04-27-2009 11:48 AM

cant see gonch taking a 1m haircut and scuds is due for a raise

Spares
Adams (.6) (2009-10 only)
Zigomanis (.7)
Lovejoy (.5)

Cap Hit
2009-2010 = 60.39/62M
2010-2011 = 59.93/60M

You're cap numbers are high so that's gonna be a buzzkill. IIRC, the current cap number is $56.7M? That might not be exact, but much closer than the 62 you are working with.

Beyond the cap hits, some of those numbers aren't realistic. The most glaring is that Scuderi is going to get much more than .9 from next season. If we can keep him (which I am not even sure we will), it will cost about $2 mill in my estimation. Sykora at $2 mill also may or may not happen.

Well Gonchar is getting older and if the Pens offer him a longer term deal, perhaps something like 5 - 4 - 4 - 3, he might go for it. That would have him signed to age 40. Perhaps he'd even be willing to go Detroit style and sign a 5-year deal with the last year being 1 million making the total cap hit 3.4M

Scuderi is earning .71M this year so .9M is a raise.

What Scuderi makes this year has absolutely no effect on what he'll make next year. He's earned a raise, and it will be a bigger one than 200k. He'll make about 2 million, not .9 million.

The easiest way to save some money would be to get rid of Dupuis somehow. I like him as a checking liner, but he's a 4th liner on this team and could easily be replaced for half of his cap hit.

Jacob 04-27-2009 12:10 PM

Hopefully the Penguins management is working out a 2-year plan right now. However, some of your figures are off.

The Cap is expected to drop to 50 million in 2010. Sykora, as bad as he's been, won't take a paycut. Cammalleri is unrealistic at 4.5 And Scuderi at .9 is a complete pipe dream, ney, an insult to our intelligence.

I've upped Scuderi to 1M. If that's still way off, they could put Lovejoy in the bottom pairing and move Eaton up to the top pairing.

I'm hoping Cammalleri (who is making 3.35 this year) will sign a longer term deal with a lower cap hit than he could potentially make with a one or two year deal.

I mean everyone can't be up for massive raises. Especially if the cap goes down. The players (employees) salaries will be affected by the economic situation along with the cap. Their salaries don't exist in a bubble and they will not be paid as much as they would be if the economy was booming. At least, that's my opinion.

Big McLargehuge 04-27-2009 12:38 PM

There is no way Scuderi makes less than $2 million next season, probably far more if he hits the UFA market (most likely an inevitability).

OK, Scuds out, Lovejoy in.

And he'll be the one guy I won't mind seeing leave for money because he deserves it. Defensive d-men like him don't get a chance at big pay-days often.

How about the idea of trading Dupuis for the rights to Kovalev or Komaserik

That would be my first move, he will never be able to perform at what we need to be in the top six. And yea he is a good 3rd and 4th line grinder, but he can easily be replaced with someone that does the job just as well, or better for less than what we are paying him.

SterlingBennett 04-27-2009 01:06 PM

Also Talbot or Zigo need to go, our center depth can cut a bit of weight.

Zigomanis is a UFA after this year, and I see Talbot never leaving Pittsburgh, he is quickly becoming a Icon.

I say we promote Jeffery and Caputi . Re-sign RFA's Gogo and Curry. Try to keeps Scuds, if we cant, try and land Komaserik for 3 and Kovalev for 3....I know its a highly optomistic wish list, but :yo: Shero is God and we all know that

ColePens 04-27-2009 01:14 PM

If we get a chance to sign Ziggy under 1M.. I snatch that guy up as quick as possible.

I am all about Luca coming up next season, and Curry could defiantly fill in as back up net minder for Flower. Garon is just... Ugh... Curry can do just as well as Garon, or even just slightly worse, for less money.

I like Gogo, so if we could afford to resign him I would have no complaints. And I agree with you for the most part about Talbot, he is loved in this city. Plus he has really come into form under DB's system in my opinion. He is never going to be a "super star" :sarcasm:, but he does his job, and does it well for what we pay him.

If the cap drops to $50 million three quarters of the teams in the league will be scrambling absent some kind of adjustment to allow teams to temporarily exceed the cap to some degree for their own players. And a LOT of teams (including those like Detroit who made so many bargain signings) will be in far worse shape. The Rags, Flyers and a lot of other teams in our division will be almost totally gutted with some of their albatross contracts. And there is not going to be much of a significant market for the players cut loose either, certainly not for any kind of big bucks. A few players for teams who have a lot of cap room, but those teams are going to be fairly limited in numbers. I would not worry too much about it as it is not a Pens 'problem' exclusively but will be pretty much a league wide problem. Which argues strongly that it will be resolved in such a way that we should be fine.

SteelGeno 04-27-2009 02:03 PM

for next year though i would like this lineup (im sure its a pipe dream)

Trade Pascal Dupuis( -1.4m) for the rights to Alex Kovalev
Alex Kovalev agrees to a contract with a cap hit of 3m
Alex Gologoski is re-signed @ .800m
Rob Scuderi is re-signed at 2m
Petr Sykora re-signed @2m
Paul Bissionnette re-signed @ .5m
===================
Kunitz (3.725) Crosby (8.7) Kennedy (.725)

Kovalev (3) Malkin (8.7) Sykora (2)

Cooke (1.2) Staal ( 4) Caputi (.525)

Bissionnette (.500) Talbot (1.050) Jeffery (.525)

Godard (.750)

Forwards 35.4
===================
Orpik (3.750) Gonchar (5)

Eaton (2) Letang ( .835)

Gologoski (.800) Scuderi (2)

Defence 14.385m
===================
Fleury (5)

Curry (.500)

Goalies 5.5m
===================
Total: 55.285m
Cap Ceiling : 56.7m

I may be a little low with my salary estimations, but I went with the Max Cap the same as this year

People are predicting it to dip to 55 million this year, and then 50 million next year. Saying it will dip to 55 million next year is being extremely optimistic. Also you're being really optimistic about Letang and Goligoski's cap numbers.

Eaton I cant see taking less, Gonchar while he might take the same amount as he makes now wont take less I do like extending him 1-2 yrs on the end to lower the cap hit though. Cammaleri is going to make 6 mil on the open market this summer though so that doesnt work too well for us. Hopefully in 2 yrs Kotalik isnt going to be necesary and either Caputi or Tangradi is ready for that spot.

Komisarek please. He had a brutal season this year but he's an absolute beast when hes healthy. I think hes gonna get something like 4.5 on the open market but if we could get him at something similar to Orpik I'd love that.

pittiful89 04-27-2009 02:58 PM

Honestly, at this point I think it should be a 1 year plan. If it actually drops to $50 million in 2010, then the league will have to do something because most teams will not be cap compliant. They will either have to temporarily decrease all salaries, make a 1 year exception to the cap, or maybe even this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_Player_Rule

But still, thinking we can keep the $21.4 million trifecta and sign the likes of Cammalleri is laughable.
