Let's see if this kid could pan out. He has the potential but let's see what the injury did to him

Slappy 05-14-2009 05:31 AM

i hope so. caps need a 2nd line center.

Foy 05-14-2009 06:41 AM

He won't be in DC next year.

tim 05-14-2009 06:55 AM

Seems pretty high for a kid you'll get likely 1 year of play from on that contract.

Boxscore 05-14-2009 07:56 AM

Slap, I don't think he is cut out for a top six forward. At least not yet. He could be a potential replacement in the near future if when Fedorov is gone.

txpd 05-14-2009 08:03 AM

Fedorov is a top 6 forward. I am not sure what you are trying to say.

Boxscore 05-14-2009 08:23 AM

The Caps did not plan on having Fedorov center their 2nd line longterm. Fedorov is a top 6 forward by default right now. Nylander was brought in to center one of the top two scoring lines with Backstrom. Where his game is right now, Fedorov is better suited as a 3rd line two-way center, which is what Gustafsson is. Gustafsson's game is more comparable to Pahlsson than a young Fedorov.

Standard entry-level contracts for players Anton's age in his draft year...for a first round pick typically is the max. salary for the draft class plus some performance bonuses.

Carlson, the other first round Caps pick for 2008, is signed for 3 years at $875,000 a year; the max salary plus signing bonus (for 2009 picks it goes up to $900,000); the only additional possibility would have been more performance bonuses, which first rounders are more likely to have built into their contracts than later round picks, but it sounds like the Caps managed to avoid those with these two although with Anton's not official yet, it is possible they are just reporting the base dollars for now and he could have some performance bonuses.

to the OP, thanks for the heads up on the news

Still not a fan of the spot they drafted him in....but we'll see how it goes.

For now, it's about him staying healthy.

KRM 05-14-2009 09:16 AM

I really like Anton, he is a very solid prospect who is underestimated just because people think he rides on his fathers successful career. But I'm curious to where he'll be playing next season, here he says it will most likely be for Frölunda, 14 forwards under contract (7 of them are centres), and a couple of high profile players rumoured close to signing.

I'd be more disappointed with the way that pick is panning out if GMGM hadn't stolen Carlson in the same round.

Langway 05-14-2009 09:37 AM

What's Frolunda doing next season? Has it been determined? Some reports said they (and a few other teams) were leaving the SEL and either joining a regional league or the KHL.

He turned 19yo in February. IMO, the issue is the injuries leading up to and after he was drafted, but when he has actually played, the reports have been favorable. I haven't seen him play since the first day of camp, so I'll have patience and hope he can stay healthy.

That's for the 2010-11 season, next season they are still in the SEL.

Langway 05-14-2009 10:52 AM

Thanks. So if Gustafsson does make the cut to Frolunda's big club then it won't be an even more pronounced jump.

I guess there's a chance that Gustafsson could join Hershey next season but the plan has been that he'd play in the SEL for a season and then come over if he's ready. I doubt much has changed over the course of the season (in part due to injuries) to accelerate that timeline.

usiel 05-14-2009 11:16 AM

Way too early to bash Anton. Sure some of the injuries are concerning. Lets see how he does this upcoming season. Caps drafting is pretty solid lately and they did take him over Carlson so they see something here.

sk84fun_dc 05-14-2009 11:18 AM

Also, note, if they are ready to sign him now and he is assigned/plays in Sweden for 09-10, the contract will not count against the 50 max since he is 19yo and does not turn 20yo until 2010.

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 05-14-2009 11:37 AM

I'm one of the few that was actually pulling for them to draft Anton in the first. Ignoring the possible nepotism, he was exactly the sort of player they were lacking in the system. I have high hopes for him.

Millhaus 05-14-2009 11:54 AM

Yeah I think if they had drafted Carlson in Gustafsson's spot and Gustafsson in Carlson's spot I don't think many would be as down on Gustafsson as they are...

Stu Macher 05-14-2009 01:08 PM

I really like him as a prospect, hopefully he can stay healthy.

Atlas 05-14-2009 02:39 PM

Don't know anything about this kid. Hopefully he becomes a player. I can tell you that his father Bengt was a great hockey player. He did a lot of the same thing Backstrom does today. Just good at everything. Hopefully the kid loves hockey as much as his dad.

Hot Carlson 05-14-2009 02:45 PM

Good news. Hopefully he can develop into a consistent centerman for us.

strungout 05-14-2009 03:11 PM

Corey finally got to HFboards today...
