Poor Florida, nobody wants to be down there...

dubey 06-01-2009 11:22 AM

Kind of sad they need a french head coach.

Oh well, good news for us.

I don't think that it is good news for the Leafs at all, Martin is a good coach.

Agreed. Not the best one out there, but a coach that has a system in place. This is at the least bit good news for Carey Price.

The only concern I'd have if I'm Montreal is that will the players buy into him ? Montreal players needed to be babysit the whole time under the Carboneau regime and the coach lost his voice. Martin needs to show some leadership here. Overall, a very good option for the Canadiens under the circumstances, because they needed a francophone coach.

I'll admit, I chuckled. But he may not be all that bad. We'll have to wait and see. He wasn't impressive in Florida, though.

Glad we have Burke and Wilson at this point. LOL at Montreal.

I never pass up a chance to laugh at the Habs. But lately it's become too easy.

As long as he's not the G.M. he'll be fine.

Wasn't Martin the coach of the Senators when we eliminated them everytime we met them in the playoffs ?!?!?!

Thank you Canadiens organization, you just made our future a whole lot brighter.

I agree, he's a good Coach....I don't see the humour in this.

He is. Has trouble adjusting on the fly in the playoffs, but this Habs team won't be squeeking into the playoffs on the last weekend of the season next year.

Jacques Martin has had a lot of regular season success in his career. He has been a top notch NHL coach. His teams tend to be dull, even-tempered and leave no secrets for playoff time. Expect Montreal to become a good defensive team, expect the Kostistyn brothers to want out (may happen before Martin coaches them) and expect young prospects who can cut it to develop realistic roles under his system where they can succeed.

Rickety Cricket 06-01-2009 12:32 PM

Its not that bad of a choice, some of you guys are acting like they hired Barry Melrose.

ULF_55 06-01-2009 12:45 PM

Martin never had a goaltender in Ottawa.

In Montreal he'll have Halak.

Mike1 06-01-2009 12:46 PM

He is much better as a coach then a GM. Although he didn't have alot of success coaching the Panthers.

It's not a horrible move. Alot of people talk about his playoff record but he wasn't exactly given great goaltenders or gritty playoff warriors in Ottawa.

I would question wether he has either in Montreal currently too.

Good regular season coach. When we get back to the playoffs and finally inevitably eventually match up with the Habs (long time coming, one of these years we'll meet)... well, I believe we're familiar with Martins record against the Leafs in the playoffs. ;)

Wasn't he behind the bench in Florida with Luongo in his net, before Keenan traded him away.

I don't remember Martin leading the Panthers to any playoff births, but I must say I enjoyed all the early Ottawa exits in the past.

It's a fair question to ask. They don't have the gritty playoff warrior types but goaltending is still a possibility. Price looked very mentally fragile at times but could rebound.

HellasLEAF 06-01-2009 01:43 PM

I'm a little surprised.

Duke Silver 06-01-2009 01:54 PM

Good idea for him to get out of Florida after his debacle of a decision not to trade Bouwmeester.
