Emery could sign for one-year @ 1.5m (post #553)

I just heard on WIP 610 that the Flyers are going really hard after Ray Emery. It was reported by Glen Macnow that the Flyers may already have deal in place but have to wait until July 1 to make the deal. I am not sure about this deal.

Barring a collapse in negotiations, the Flyers are expected to sign Ray Emery as their starting goalie for next season.

TheKingPin 06-03-2009 12:41 PM

Well hell, if he comes at 2.5 or so I think you have to sign him. He is a "proven" goalie that comes cheap. And like it or not cheap is the name of the game. But either way id rather have Harding at 2.5 than Emery.

I would rather have Harding as well. Right now we need goalies since it doesn't seem like they are going to sign Biron or Niity.

Flyersfan1216 06-03-2009 12:49 PM

Cant they sign him now since he played in Europe last season. Eklund and a flyers beat writer saying the deal is all but done

Terence Peterman 06-03-2009 12:57 PM

I hope not. 610 doesn't give a damn about hockey either, so I have a hard time buying into this.

It's not Emery's attitude I have a problem with, it's the FO's. If this is their "solution," next season's going to be a guess at best.

Chuck Downie 06-03-2009 12:58 PM

this looks to be true.....I hope to hell that he's matured.

BigBanger 06-03-2009 12:58 PM

another smart move by great flyer organization ... im sure the sheep will love it.

FlyHigh 06-03-2009 01:01 PM

Wow, I can barely contain my excitement.

If we sign Emery and let Biron go, it's a massive step backwards.

six sigma 06-03-2009 01:04 PM

Nothing against Emery, but is he really the starter this team needs?:dunno: Kinda confused here.

dbr2 06-03-2009 01:06 PM

I'm so over this Emery crap.

im hoping is that they are possibilly forcing the hand of Biron and his agent.
Or they don want to pay the price for trading for Harding or Lehtonen.
Or this thing out of 610 could just be a giant pile of crap.

I just can't imagine who the hell the backup would be at that point.

And it's probably best I don't think about it.

Flyersguru 06-03-2009 01:10 PM

Timmy P says its pretty much done.

If we get Emery and a decent back-up for 3.5 mill I am all for it as long as the extra $$ goes to def. Emery talent wise is = to Biron, so def a good option if he is cheap.

Even outside of the off-ice crap (all this team needs is another partier and undisciplined player), Emery had 1 good season on an absolutely dominant Ottawa team and was extremely mediocre during his other 2 years.

**** Holmgren.

**** this ****ing POS team.

Says what?

And who is this "decent" backup?

dawkins121 06-03-2009 01:17 PM

As much as I hate to say it, he might be the best mix of track record and affordability on the market right now...

dbr2 06-03-2009 01:18 PM

Injecting locker room cancer.

I think it's a massive step sideways. They are about equal and I might actually prefer Emery a tiny little bit.

Either way, you guys really need a real goaltender. I don't see Harding, Emery, Biron, ________ (insert random mediocre goalie here) as the answer any time soon.

Granted, that's easier said than done.

But I actually think it might be a good deal for you guys if Emery can regain some of his potential.

Which is a nice way to say, "picked up at the Bargain Basement Super Center."

Give me Marty ****ing Biron.

CanadianFlyer88 06-03-2009 01:20 PM

Another opportune time for the 'vomit smilie.'

My opinion,

Biron apparently wants 5 mill, I will scream if we pay him that much. Emery is still young, give him a chance and see if he can bounce back.
If Biron asks for 5 mill and Minny and Atl ask for too much in a trade, who do you guys think is a better option ???

Opus 06-03-2009 01:20 PM

If true, it's definitely high risk. His off ice shenanigans are well documented, and a thing of concern. I posted them all in a previous Emery thread.

However. If he wants to prove that he's a changed man and drops the diva attitude, we have pretty much the same skilled goalie at a lesser cap hit. That would free up some money to go after a defenseman and chore up the back end.

Of course, this could backfire. At the very least, the soundbites and media quotes will be worth the price of admission.
