Vanek vs. Semin

Who would you rather have on your team?

Alexander Semin 254games 108goals 108assists 216points -2+/-

Thomas Vanek 318games 144goals 116assists 260points 30+/-

Who I would rather haver? Semin pretty easily.

AK 06-17-2009 01:20 PM

I'll say Vanek here. He's never had nearly the support Semin has, but his numbers are very similar (more goals per game, less points per game).

Infinite Vision* 06-17-2009 01:42 PM

Semin for sure.

IBLeaf* 06-17-2009 01:44 PM

Semin.

Why is the poll in multi-vote format?

Seeing as how the Sabres went to the conference finals in 06 and 07, as well as won the Presidents Trophy in 07, I'd say Vanek has had plenty of support around him.

Semin has perhaps the best wrist shot in the game, and also seems to get a lot more assists than Vanek, so I'll give the nod to him. Plus, he's the best fighter in the league :sarcasm:.

This is a joke right? Have you ever heard about Daniel Briere or Chris Drury?

Maybe because this is the OP's first poll.

5 other players with over 60 points, I'd say is pretty good support.

While Semin is over 1ppg in the playoffs, Vanek is under .5ppg in the playoffs.

Vanek by the slimmest of margins. Good poll.

The Big Swede 06-17-2009 02:41 PM

Vanek because of his two way play

The Sabres haven't made the playoffs the last 2 years though, right?
Vanek ended up in the playoffs as a rookie and as a sophomore. That's not to say he'd be over 1ppg if the Sabres made the playoffs, but at least I would only count his second playoffs (10 pts in 16 games?).

Good poll though, very tough. I think I'd go with Vanek actually. Seems like what you'd get from him is more "predictable", in lack of a better word to use.
That of course is not taking salary into account...

t3hg00se 06-17-2009 03:24 PM

I'll take the goal scorer and two way player in Vanek.

TBenny 06-17-2009 03:30 PM

Semin for his fighting ability.

chewey 06-17-2009 03:52 PM

Damn! I tied it 20/20, but I wanted to vote Vanek and not Semin.

thefifthsedin* 06-17-2009 04:08 PM

it's vanek

but semin has some mean fighting skills :pillow:

Boxscore 06-17-2009 06:37 PM

Real good poll. Vanek gets my vote, and I am a Caps fan.

Selanne08* 06-17-2009 06:39 PM

Semin.

This past year he showed his skills. If not for the cheap shots he took, he could of led the league in points.

Vanek didn't play with either of them. He was mainly on a line with Roy and Afinogenov, both of whom put up career highs when playing with Vanek.

Ever heard of Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, or Sergei Fedorov? Besides, IIRC Vanek spent most of his time on Roy's line when those two were on the Sabres anyway.

I guess I worded things a bit strong, but I won't back down from the belief that Semin has better support around him. He's also playing in probably the most offensively-oriented system in the league. Vanek seems like he's sometimes bottled up by Ruff and a lack of firepower on his team.

And Semin spent most of his time with Laich and Fleishman

And Vanek never played in an offensively oriented system? When Buffalo won the presidents trohpy, had 12 more goals then the 2nd highest scoring team that year, and 30 more goals then Washington had this year. How quickly people forget what a really good team Buffalo used to be. 6 players total had 60+ points, Washington had 4. In their respective career years, there is no way you can say Semin had the better support.

Infinite Vision* 06-17-2009 07:55 PM

I don't know if people realize Semin was on pace for over 100 points this year, and was 4th in points per game behind Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby. Vanek should not be winning.

There are more things that need to be taken into account besides points.

I voted Vanek. Two way player. Pure goal scorer. Perfect english. I don't know about that contract though.

Infinite Vision* 06-17-2009 08:42 PM

Vanek isn't really that much of a two way player imo, not enough that it makes a difference how much better offensively Semin is. Semin is just as good of a goal scorer if not better, and for sure a better playmaker.
