Toronto, Philadelphia, Minnesota and LA Closing in on Ryane Clowe

Per his twitter. He says the Sharks are also trying to re-sign him. Sounds like they might be a contract impass.

Tor, Philly, Minny and LA closing in on Ryane Clowe. SJ still trying to sign him.

Clowe is one of my favorite players and imo on the verge of becoming one of the best power forwards in the West. I'd love to have him on my Leafs.

detredWINgs 06-26-2009 12:13 PM

Surprised LA is "closing in" on a deal with an in-stater.

mercury 06-26-2009 12:14 PM

What would Philly be giving up? A forward, a salary dump, and a pick or prospect? And why do we need another forward?

JMFJ 3 06-26-2009 12:16 PM

I wouldn't mind a Clowe - Handzus - Simmonds 3rd line.

suitup17 06-26-2009 12:18 PM

Clowe to Minny for Koivu. Not sure what else San Jose would have to give.

Le Rosbeef 06-26-2009 12:19 PM

I don't think Clowe is going anywhere, I really don't. He's too valuable to this team if he plays to his potential and he's still young.

I don't get it either. The last thing Philly needs is another winger. And they have Hartnell anyway.

State of Hockey 06-26-2009 12:20 PM

Would love to see him in Minnesota. He's probably my favorite Shark.

Why the hell would you put Clowe on the 3rd line? :shakehead

Sharks don't Koivu. They need high draft picks and talented young wingers, or prospects of that type.

McNasty 06-26-2009 12:22 PM

Not sure I understand this from a Flyers perspective, but Clowe is a guy I like a lot. Kinda funny to see the Sharks move one of the guys who plays better in the playoffs instead of some of their underachievers.

hockeyball 06-26-2009 12:24 PM

I think the issue is DW is looking to the future cap issues and looking for a discount from Clowe.

Plus there have been some injury concerns with Clowe that DW definitely has more details on that we are no privy too. It's possible he's saying "your a risk, we won't pay that".

Not sure I like giving up Clowe for a draft pick. There's no guarantee they will pan out. Plus Clowe has a lot of potential. It would have to be an overpayment for a trade.

GKJ 06-26-2009 12:25 PM

We might need a Darren Dreger Twitter Thread.

I'm down with him though for the Flyers.

Team are going to overpay for a guy with 1 good year....:shakehead

Is Clowe is moved, it's going to be because DW doesn't think he can sign him to a contract he feels comfortable with, or because he gets offered a deal he can't pass. The Sharks have some very real cap issues over the next couple of years, and as much as I like Clowe, I thought he was a disappointment in the 2nd half of this year (and the playoffs), and it's not impossible that DW thinks he is replacable.

WTFMAN99 06-26-2009 12:29 PM

Quick! Run faster Doug! :)

That's very true, but the rest of our team disappeared too. If we could get a couple of good prospects I would be happy as well. We're starting to run out.

That's how HFBoards works. 1 good year + under 28 = Perpetual superstar. Coincidentally, 8 good years + over 30 = Declining waste of paycheck.

Ninja Hertl 06-26-2009 12:30 PM

I'd hate to get rid of Ryane, but it seems like the Sharks could get great value seeing as he's universally coveted.

That said the sharks want an awesome winger. What can these teams offer?

I like Clowe, but its good to know you didn't watch any Sharks playoff games this year.

I don't really understand it from Philly's standpoint, either. Clowe would be an awesome Flyer, but he seems a bit redundant. Hartnell plays a similar game. I could see Clowe as a replacement for Knuble, but he will assuredly make more than Knuble and will command assets in return. If the Flyers are able to clear a forward's salary (Lupul and/or Briere), then I could see this being a good move, but I don't think it will happen.

Gagne - Richards - Clowe
Hartnell - Carter - Giroux

Those lines look great, but they obviously assume the Flyers trade both Lupul and Briere and let Knuble walk.
