State of the Union Address
So....where are we at? I think Bolland's contract is a bit rich. Same can be same for Byfuglien, Huet, and Campbell. That being said, with raises due to Keith, Seabrook, Toews, Kane, and Barker...what's next? Khabibulin? Gone. Havlat? Gone.
How do you think we did in the draft over the last couple days? How do we approach free agency (if we approach it at all)? Who do we have to move? Are we in deep **** or what? We're just starting a rebuild, but I have a god awful feeling that we're already in trouble. Between Bolland, Byfuglien, Huet, and Campell...I think we've handcuffed ourselves quite a bit. I can't even imagine what our upcoming RFA's are going to command after we fattened up Buff and Bolland the way we did.
I'll be honest...I'm scared ****less.
What they do in free agency depends on the RFAs; how many will be kept and how many will be traded? Could use a 3rd line center is Pahlsson isn't coming back, since Versteeg and Sharp are better as wingers, but Pahlsson will cost $1.5-2M.
Versteeg| Toews | Kane
Ladd | Bolland | Byfuglien
Brouwer | Sharp | Aliu/Beach/Skille
Eager | Fraser | Burish
* ex: Dowell
Keith | Seabrook
Hjalmarsson | Campbell
Barker | Sopel/Hendry
* ex: Johnson
Red = RFA
You know...the more I think about it, the more comfortable I am with the idea of letting other teams tender offers to SOME RFA's...especially if it means we can stock the cupboard with more picks so we can keep the stream of talent coming. If you're going to build from the inside, it's the best way to go. You can't keep offering big $'s to other free agents when you have your own to take care of. I thought for sure we'd have seen Tallon trade someone like a Jack Skille at the draft, though.
2) Huet's deal is less than Khabby's, so if Huet can regain his form we're actually saving cap space there...
3) Versteeg and Barker are expendable, I doubt either are a part of the Hawk's "core" going forward. Look for either to be traded or tendered lower than Bolland's contract.
