Vladimir Malenkykh

Would someone be kind enough to give me a small synopsis of his performance with Lada Togliatti, and offer an opinion on his readiness to play in NA?

Very much appreciated.

I, too, am very intrigued with him. Anything is appriciated.

Soyuz 04-05-2004 04:46 PM

He's been ready for the past two years. On the thin team like Pittsburgh he would be a solid top 4 blue liner. I am surprised they haven't signed him yet. He did have a mediocre playoffs with a couple of bad mistakes in the semis where Lada got eliminated, but overall he is a solid blueliner and Pitt should definitely sign him.

I think i heard they are trying to sign him this summer, which would pose a very interesting, yet good problem next season as to who gets to play in Pittsburgh...

Consensus is that the two defenseman in college right now (Noah Welch and Ryan Whitney) are ready to step into the NHL. With the emergence of Ric Jackman and Brooks Orpik this season, along with prospects like Martin Strbak and Ross Lupaschuk, it seems to me the Pens have more than enough depth at D now.

Heres my starting 6 D for the Pens next year:
Rick Jackman and Dick Tarnstrom
Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi
Dan Focht and Michael Rosival

They need to trade melichar or cut him, because hes terrible.

enough said, anyones thoughts

I think the Pens merely offered him tryout contracts the past two years. I've also heard that Malenkykh is only interested in a one-way deal, but I don't buy that.

Either way, everything I've heard sounds promising.

He is probably ready for the NHL. He plays first line on Lada which is probably the most defensive (and boring) team ever seen in Russia. he had a pretty brutal game in the playoffs when his team lost 6-0 to Omsk. THe coach said that the pair Malenkikh-Kondratiev (the NYR prospect who played few games with the Maple Leafs early this season). was resposible for 4 goals. THe pair is selected for the national team though. He probably won't be a top 2 D but could be a valuable top4-6.

I can't help but wonder what how much the Russian Hockey Federation or whatever it's called is compensated for star after star leaving their system and country. Does anyone know?

Do the PENS have a history of bad Russian draft picks or something?

Soyuz 04-09-2004 09:52 AM

The current agreement ends this summer. Under the agreement they would get $150k for a first round pick - which is a joke, since that usually means they lose their top talent.

Scratch Focht and put Melichar. Rozsival's status is up in the air.
Tarnstrom, Jackman, Melichar, Orpik and locks, Scuderi is close to it. The remaining spot would be up for grabs between Rozsival, Malenkykh (if signed), Whitney, Lupaschuk, Focht and Strbak. Welch will stay in college.
Malenkhyk is strangely enough not the biggest need. But you don't waste assets, and I'd rather see the Penguins trade Rozsival, Focht and Strbak and bring Malenkykh.

Here are my Pens dmen:
Jackman-Tarnstrom
Orpik-Whitney
Malenkykh - Rozsival/Melichar/Scuderi/Strbak/Focht

I really want Malenkykh to play because he is very physical, and we need that.

Jacob 04-27-2004 05:00 PM

Is that true, Guillaume and Soyuz, that Malenkykh is pretty imposing in terms of his body checking?

Zoo 04-28-2004 01:03 AM

I hope the pens sort out something cause we could use abit more mongrel on our blueline to go with Orpik.

Here's my line up.

Locks*

Tarnstrom*- Jackman*
Orpik*-
Melichar*

So that leaves us with two spots open.

Rozsival - I think CP should try and move him at the draft. For a middle or a late pick.

Strbak - Trade bait.He could be put on waivers.Lets hope some on picks him up.

Whitney - Playing well for WBS, I think he could make it out of camp and possibly being paried with orpik to add some offence to that line.

Scuderi - I have no problem with him being our 6th defencmen.

Malenkykh - First off I hope we get him into camp and he forces Edzo to put him in the line up.But if not a year in WBS or less would be nice.

Foct - He's our 7th defencmen, who can fill from time to time.

Nemec - I like this guy, I feel he could be the dark horse at this years camp.
