I'm not terribly worried about Grebeshkov. I think the Oiler are tight against the cap and are hoping they can get him signed for under $3M a season. I think they'll ultimately get him locked up, or he'll be awarded, in the $3-4M range which most of us pretty much expected him to get all along.

I expect this domino to fall within days of the Heatley domino falling (whether or not he approves the trade).

rigger 07-13-2009 11:22 AM

Grebs will be signed, if there's one thing we know its that K Lowe is a great judge of defensive talent. He grabbed this guy and knows he has the ability to get to Visnovsky levels.

He's signed long term prior to arbitration I believe. He's said to be very coachable and soaks things up like a sponge, he's said he likes it here and with Khabby coming (the best russian goalie for quite some time) I would think that makes Grebby happy to play with him.

Other Little Mikey 07-13-2009 11:39 AM

I just think they don't want to sign anyone until they figure out who might get traded. Probably teams like the ability to sign a guy themselves. Smid's not signed either.

This is the million dollar question. When is the Heatly domino going to fall. 1 day or two a week or two a month or two? At this point all we know is it will be before training camp and that is too damn long for this organization to wait for.

And there's more.

I know I reference the ratio of offensive/defensive zone faceoffs for certain players, but Corsi numbers are pretty much useless without it. I'd be willing to bet that virtually all of those players on Kulka's list start far more of their shifts in their own end than it the offensive zone, or at the very least are among the leaders on their teams in this metric.

"At any rate, I generated Quality of Competition four different ways for the Edmonton Oilers. Rankings among regular players are below:"

What follows is a table containing 4 wildly different calculations for each player. Proof positive that this QoC number is more noise than signal.

Reminds me of the 3 different Feng Shui experts giving 3 wildly different and conflicting opinions on that episode of Bullshiat with Penn and Teller.

Like Feng Shui, I guess QoC is whatever you want it to be.

Asher 07-13-2009 12:38 PM

My guess is another 1 year deal for Grebs.

Jay Bouwmeester is clearly one of the worst players in the league and no one here wanted him to join the Oilers, especially those people who love to use Corsi in their other arguments.

Oh, wait...

Red Deer Rebel 07-13-2009 12:40 PM

Maybe I need another shot of coffee, but I'm having a hard time finding the Grebeshkov article. Which is it?

Oh, wait...

They still haven't come up for a statistic for good players that play on ***** teams.

Oh I didn't have a Grebs article, I just couldn't think of an appropriate poll based on what I did have... sorry, throwing you a curve ball today.

Ah that would explain it. I've never been able to hit a curve.

Red Deer Rebel 07-13-2009 12:48 PM

I don't think there's much of an issue here. Grebs likely is just deferring to his agent, and, from what I understand, his agent is a bit of a hardliner.

It looks like Tambi is a bit of a hardliner as well, which is what we need.

When they do, I'm sure it will be an advanced one.

Oh, wait...

voodoo numbers suggest the oilers should target a trade for David Moss to play on the top line with Horcs. Corsi supermen.

"Bouwmeester is the defenceman who had the most ice time on a bad team in the NHL. Perhaps that explains his inclusion on this list, but it is alarming that he didnít do enough to drive the Florida offence to have a better Corsi Number. Is that worth $6.6 million a year from the Calgary Flames? I am skeptical."

Jaybo is overrated.

okgooil 07-13-2009 01:12 PM

I have to wonder if grebs has something to do with heatley (for the love of god, make up your mind:shakehead) if he comes we will be in cap trouble, maybe then they want to just give him a short term deal for a lower cap hit. If that is the case I hope we don't get heatley and they lock up grebs long term ala gilbert.

Yes, Khabibulin would testify to that. ;)

Like I said, Corsi data is useless without the proper context. All Corsi shows is the relation of shots for and against when you're on the ice. Any fool should be able to understand the notion that when you're starting more often than not in front of your own net, you're more likely to be on the ice for a shot against than a shot for. Even the best faceoff men lose 40% or more of their draws, so it's not uncommon for a shot against to occur without anybody being at fault defensively. This is especially likely for defensemen who have little to no impact on the outcome of a faceoff.

Kulka (Mirtle is bad for this as well) is just showing that people who don't understand the numbers they're using shouldn't try to use them to prove or disprove anything.
