Meltzer: Flyers sign Finnish National Mika Pyorala

The next question you will all have is "Who the **** is this?"

We'll do some research on this one...

GKJ 07-14-2009 06:16 PM

28 YO 8-year veteran. Played Center with Karpat of SM-Liiga for 6 years, Timra IK the last 2. Played with Johan Backlund, Joni Pitkanen, Lasse Kukkonen, Par Styf and Jussi Timonen in the past. Matti Kautto must really like him and whoever our scout is in Sweden must agree. Whatever it may be, they're familiar with him as he's been around players with Flyers connections.

Last year 33 points, +11. 5'11' 169

312 Career points in 552 games

21 goals and 22 assists last year at Timra IK in 55 games.

Interesting.

I think he will go straight to the Phantoms

Sorry about the Swedish, but you understand the stats I hope

He is a 2 way player from Finland, played pretty good for Timrå but I am not really sure if he will make it in Philly.

Ha! I was just gonna PM you to see if you could help us out here!

I'm wondering if this is someone who can take faceoffs. No luck finding numbers.

He really didn't play center until the past season, though. He's not a very good faceoff guy at all.

If he makes the team, I can finally change my name to something that rhymes with one of my favorite bands, and it would fit perfectly

BillyShoe1721 07-14-2009 06:31 PM

Weren't we rumored to be signing Mikko Lehtonen as well? I bet they were scouting one either Pyorala or Lehtonen and noticed the other one.

I must say, it would be weird if you ever changed your name ha.

So will this guy, play in the A for a little then come up? Or, make the jump with us at the start of the season.

Any one else not find any stats on him on, Hockeydb? I can't find ****.

I guess we'll just have to wait for camp. Right now all the guys we have that expect to play can't all make the team.

FlyHigh 07-14-2009 06:55 PM

This better not be our 3rd line C solution.

Vikke 07-14-2009 07:26 PM

I very much doubt this signing is for the Phantoms.
I don't think neither Pyörälä nor the Flyers would do that.
A 28 year old SEL star who's a regular on the Finnish national team has no ambition at all playing in the AHL. He's signed to make the team out of camp.

I posted on the Trade rumors board that he reminds me of Jere Lehtinen a bit, but I might be off since I didn't see too many Timrå games last season.

His eliteprospects profile, stats, photo and a brief scouting report:

FlyHigh 07-14-2009 07:30 PM

I don't think he's going to the Phantoms either, I don't necessarily mind him as a 3rd line winger, I just don't want him as a C.

EDIT: Especially while Malhotra and others are still floating around.

dbr2 07-14-2009 07:38 PM

He's gonna have to get used to the North American rinks. He might be put into the AHL for a little.
Correct me if I'm wrong on that.
