He got a job. Good for him.

sk84fun_dc 07-21-2009 12:21 PM

Looking around the League, I was thinking that was a possibility, but hoping it didn't happen. Still, good for Johnson. there was no chatter about him, which I thought was a bit strange.

strungout 07-21-2009 12:23 PM

Shero wins yet again. Good signing.

Fallschirmyager 07-21-2009 12:30 PM

like many others, I'd have preferred to keep Johnson and let Theo go. GL BJ

New best case scenario: trading Theo for a 2nd at the deadline.

I hope Johnny got a 1 way deal; should be an open competition between him and Curry for the backup role.

Same here. I really wanted to be able to root for him too, but it wasn't to be.

pgreene 07-21-2009 12:39 PM

disappointing. i really like johnny and would've loved to see him go somewhere i could wish him success. guess that means we can't get rid of theo.

unless of course we're planning to trade nyls to chicago for khabibulin. :sarcasm:

Alex28* 07-21-2009 12:39 PM

Jesus Christ, why does McPhee do this to us?

Guy was cheap, fan favorite, dynamite in the locker room, and possibly starter material if his hip goes back to normal. We fans deserve better than this

At this point, I'm not sure I want to trade Theo. Moving him that late doesn't help us unless it's part of a plan to clear space for a deadline acquisition. Whether that's the idea or not, we would be heading to the playoffs with two kids in net which seems extremely risky.

but there's no net for him to tend if we a) don't move theo or 2) keep varlamov up. i suppose there's room to imagine varlamov flames out and goes back to hershey, but realistically there just wasn't a place for johnny without getting rid of theo. also realistically, it would've been a bit nerve wracking to go into next year with a post-injury backup and a rookie in the net.

Why in the hell would you trade a vet goalie heading into the playoffs where he could be needed?

Oh to have someone as competant.

Exactly, that's why we move Theo.

Theo and Johnson are more or less a wash in terms of ability (though Johnson is slightly better in pressure situations) but Johnson is cheaper, has more of a history with the organization and fans don't want to light him on fire outside Verizon center.. Also if Varlamov is promoted he should get at least 45-55 games. Putting him in a backup role would crush his development. Johnson is good enough to successfully play 25-35 games for us on about the same level Theo would.

Good luck with that.

Are we really praising Shero and lamenting GMGM because of the signing of a backup goalie?

To whom exactly?

You make it sound like someone would just graciously take his $4.5 salary in a trade...after explaining how he and Johnson are basically the same.

Good one.

Sounds eerily similar to what the Canadians did in 2008 at the trade deadline. Trade the veteran soon to be UFA Huet to the Caps for a 2nd round pick and rely on the youngster Carey Price in the playoffs. Didn't turn out particularly well for the Canadians when Price underperformed and there was no veteran backup.

No just praising Shero for knowing his job and doing it well.

Ironically Price and Huet played at about the same level in the playoffs.

Rumor is they were going for Hossa and expected to get Hedberg as well, but that the Pens swooped in after the Huet trade, so it may not have been their first choice to go with Price/Halak.

Pretty much.

1 year 1-way $525,000 deal for Johnny.

Man.

Could have bought out Theodore for $1.5 per year for 2 years...paid Johnny $550K or so for two years....and still saved.

Oh well.

Stay the course!

Drake1588 07-21-2009 01:27 PM

That's a solid pickup at a great price.

sk84fun_dc 07-21-2009 01:29 PM

Agree. When I saw it the price is a little surprising (I figured less than 1M but more than that), but given there are still some other goalies out there and most of the backups are slotted in heading into camp, the Pens had some say.

Varlamov already has a year of playoff experience, so it's not like it's a blind shot. Plus, are we really such great contenders that we need to have a solid backup goalie? We've got Ovechkin and a prayer: same as we had last year, same as we had the year before. Theo won't push us to a Cup.
