2nd Line Center "again"

So.. it looks pretty much that Lombardi's shopping tour ended.

We still have a big hole on the 2nd line Center position if not Stoll or Handzus really step up.

But wanna listen to you guys... who is your guy to center the 2nd line and most important WHY ????????

I give it a shot... and say it's Teddy Purcell.
Lombardi gave him a 1 year contract and the reason for that is he has to proofe something. I think they will give him top 6 minutes from the season beginning and see what's happening.
But i don't see him stealing a winger spot and he is a pure playmaker with great hockey sense and passing skills.

that's why i think it looks like

Smyth - Kopitar - Brown
Frolov - Purcell - Williams

so he has 2 guys to mentor him and could really help to take his skills to the next level.

Just 2 problems...... the Salary from Stoll and Handzus on line 3 and 4 but you let the most skilled guy play not the most payed one

It's going to be Stoll. He's going to fire that cannon of a shot and Smyth and Brown are going to pick up the rebounds for the garbage goals.

downsy89 07-24-2009 10:47 AM

Frolov Kopitar Williams
Smyth Stoll Brown
Purcell Handzus Simmionds
Ivanans Richardson Segal

SportsFan 07-24-2009 11:26 AM

I think Stoll is going to have a very good year. I see him getting 20-25 goals with 30+ assists, getting 50-60 points. Along with solid defensive play, great faceoff skills, and playing with grit, he would be a pretty good 2nd line center.

Cutty Sarkn3ss* 07-24-2009 11:36 AM

Smyth - Stoll - Brown - that is a gritty second line.

I agree, the farther away he gets from that concussion, the better he'll be. He's a big reason our PP got a boost last year, w/ his point shot and face-off wins. If he can sniff 68 points again, then we should be in good shape. Its possible with the line mates he'll be playing with.

Smyth is going to play with Kopitar

JBernierFan 07-24-2009 12:21 PM

I do say the second line will be Smyth-Stoll-Brown. It makes so much sense. I think Brown will really step up this year playing with Smyth and learning from him, not only as a leader but also getting the garbage goals.

AKAY47 07-24-2009 12:52 PM

Brendan Segal is a AHL player, not an NHL player.. Like a Marty Murray type..
Patrick Eaves was released today, I think he would fit perfectly on the line with Handzus and Simmonds

Frolov - Kopitar - Williams
Smyth - Stoll - Brown
Eaves - Handzus - Simmonds
Clune - Lewis - Ivanans/Harrold

jimmy1100 07-24-2009 12:59 PM

I'm glad everyone here seems to agree about the Smyth - Stoll - Brown line. It just makes too much sense. Not to mention that Smyth/Stoll are former teammates. Heading into training camp, I see the roster as such:

Frolov - Kopitar - Williams
Smyth - Stoll - Brown
[ ] - Handzus - Simmonds
[ ] - [ ] - [ ]

Greene - Doughty
Johnson - Scuderi
O'Donnell - [ ]

Quick
Ersberg

The blanks are up for grabs in camp and I think it would take an amazing camp to unseat one of the already filled spots above.

whats with your Eaves hard on?

FYI, Smyth has been moved to center from time to time, least he was used as one at times when he was with the Oilers. With that said, Stoll is the #2 center. His point production should improve next season. I think he needs a setup man on his wing and Frolov should be playing along with Stoll and Brown while Smyth should be on the top line with Kopitar and Williams.

I agree but I also think it is possible we might see Purcell on the second line with Brown playing LW and Frolov playing with Handzus and Simmonds again.

don't worry, we'll be able to see all of the above and possibly even in 1 game. and as soon as we see one that clicks *boom* we'll have something different.

It will be Stoll but I really want to see what Purcell can do in that spot too. He may get a couple chances there throughout the season and if he produces, he could stick. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

Hold the phone, did I just agree with Kurrillino?:amazed:

I agree.
Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Frolov-Stoll-Brown

Smyth and Brown both like to go to the net, and I just don't see that aspect being needed by 2 guys on the same line.

Johnny Utah 07-24-2009 03:10 PM

Yeah Rich Hammond pretty much guessed the top 6 in a blog earlier this summer...

Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Frolov-Stoll-Brown
Purcell-Handzus-Simmonds
Ivanans/Clune-Lewis/Richardson-Zeiler/Westgarth

As does Williams.

You may not remember but Stoll and Frolov played on a same line towards the latter part of the season and they didn't gel at all whereas, we already know that Kopi and Fro have some chemistry. If anything, Brownie and JW may switch. But my money's on Smyth/Stoll/Brownie

LAX attack* 07-24-2009 03:25 PM

If we have Purcell up for the whole year, playing on the PP with Stoll, I'm pretty sure that Stoll will get at least 50, if not 60 points.

I would much rather have Smyth and Brown playing with Stoll than Purcell

I must be. No other explanation.

Well who plays on the 1st PP if not Smyth?

there is plenty of room for Purcell on the PP next year

Defgarden 07-24-2009 05:20 PM

I don't think there's a HUGE hole at second line center. Either Stoll or Handzus should be comparable to most team's 2nd liner. Yes, there are options for upgrade, but a 60 point and defensively responsible effort plus good faceoffs would be fine. If they can't hit that mark, well, then we'll have options.
