Shanahan in blue and white

I would love to see Shanahan finish his career with the leafs at the right price , he would be great in a young dressing room.

HockeyAustralia 08-01-2009 02:38 AM

Yeah I reckon, just like when The Young Pittsburgh squad of a few years back had Mark Recci

Veteran Presence is important

cynicism 08-01-2009 05:23 AM

Isn't that what Primeau and Mayers are here for? :sarcasm:

LTL 08-01-2009 05:46 AM

I've wanted Shanny here for the last few seasons but at the moment we're stacked on veteran forwards.

ugotmybeef* 08-01-2009 07:05 AM

This is not a retirement home.

More and more it seems it is, many fans would like us to sign any free agents, for each bum player that is put on waivers a thread pops out "should we claim x?".

Mayers, Primeau, Kaberle, Blake, Hagman, Ponikarosvky, Beauchemin, Toskala........thats enough "veteran" talent for the locker room.

Why waste another roster spot on a vet that gives you nothing on the ice. Signing a 40 year old takes away a spot from a 22-23 year old.

Which is extremely annoying!

Down Goes Brown 08-01-2009 08:09 AM

Better plan: sign him, let him lead by example for four months, then flip him to a contender for a pick at the deadline.

I too thought we were past the country club phase for this franchise.

this would be the worst idea since bringing in Ron Francis. why would burke expend all that cap space on a guy who has every potential to give you a below average effort on the ice. the leafs have to go after forwards who are starting to peak/peaking, and not declining.

Shanny wouldn't be a big cap hit at this stage in his career.

That said... I want the forward spot open to younger players.

TheLeastOfTheBunch 08-01-2009 09:19 AM

No thanks

Taking away a roster spot from a kid is not worth a 5th round pick imo.

Burke could sign anybody really. He's proved that, with getting Primeau and all these guys. If he likes a sucka, he gets him. No matter what our rear ends think. Burke has a master plan.

Doesn't seem like Burkie is terribly concerned with that based on his moves this offseason. What kid did you have in mind, exactly?

TheFuture1 08-01-2009 11:49 AM

Well he does live in Toronto...I would know since my good buddy is tapping his daughter hah...I'll find out if he's interested ;)

Sure, but which kid's spot would Shanahan be taking?

The Leafs only have a handful of young forwards on the bubble this year, and if they all turned out to be worth an NHL roster spot then you can always demote a guy like Primeau. It would be a nice problem to have.

Tlusty, Hanson, and Stalberg seem to be the only hopeful wingers going into camp. I'm guessing Tlusty has a spot.

That's strange since Shanny only has three children. All under the age of 10.

Right you are

Quote:

Shanahan married Catherine Janney (ex-wife of former St. Louis linemate Craig Janney) on July 4, 1998; they have three children - twins Maggie and Jack were born on November 23, 2002, and daughter Catherine Rosaleen was born on October 16, 2004.
The oldest ones, the twins are not even 7 years old yet.
