Grachev unlikely to return to Brampton

Anyway, Hey guys,

Brock from OHL Prospects here. I don't have any confirmed information about Grachev at this time, and didn't mean for the blog to read as it did. What I meant to say, was that it's widely rumored in Brampton that Grachev won't be back. Rumored was meant to be in place in the article, but as a typo was left out. Sorry to get your hopes up.

To give you a little more information, many Brampton fans seem to think Grachev is as good as gone, especially with it being a rebuilding season in Brampton. On the flipside, the Battalion do have an import spot open with defenceman Alex Eriksson signing in Sweden next year, rather than playing his OA year in the OHL. So it could go either way.

Personally, I can't see the Rangers sending Grachev back. Brampton will be rebuilding this year without Hodgson, McCollum, and more than likely Matt Duchene. What more would Grachev have to prove at the OHL level? A similar player in a similar situation, Kings prospect Andrei Loktionov HAS informed the Spitfires he won't be back to play in the OHL and will play in the AHL (if he doesn't make the NHL). The Spits dropped his rights, so that is official. Considering that Loktionov was less effective as a player than Grachev last year, (IMO), I can't see the Rangers doing something different in this situation. Grachev is pro ready, a complete player who got better and better as the season went along. He needs to take that next step, and there is a reason Battalion fans don't expect him back.

Until then, I'll try to get something official from Brampton management on the Grachev situation. Since they haven't dropped his rights yet, anything can happen though.

Sorry to steer you guys in the wrong direction though with a typo! Hope you guys keep visiting the blog and I'll continue to post scouting reports for you guys in your prospects section.

Was looking for some confirmation/news about Grachev's future. The writer of the blogs knows his OHL hockey. He has some other tidbits about Werek and Stajcer.

THN rated the prospects in their fantasy magazine.94 points for Gaborik.

1-Evgeny Grachev
2-Michael Del Zotto
3-Ryan McDonagh
4-Matt Gilroy(THN projects him with 45 points this season for the Rangers)
5-Artem Anisimov
6-Bobby Sanguinetti
7-Chris Krieder
8-Derek Stepan
9-Ethan Werek
10-Ivan Baranka

I would swap out Baranka with Bourque or Sauer.

So Brampton is missing Hodsgon, Duchene, and now Battleship? Ouch.

Levitate 08-24-2009 09:18 AM

Not surprising, but good to see confirmation. I imagine he starts in the AHL and hopefully earns a callup, then taking a full time spot next season in place of someone like Higgins or Prospal.

WhipNash27 08-24-2009 09:21 AM

It would be nice if he could earn a spot on the team from day 1, but the fact is that there is just no space on the roster at this point.

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want Higgins in the lineup.

Grachev will take Prospal's place.

Not saying that I wouldn't want him, but he's on a one year deal and will be an UFA next year. He may be gone whether the Rangers want to keep him or not

Higgins is an UFA after this year. There's a good chance we'll lose him given our cap situation and next year's pending RFAs.

nyr2k2 08-24-2009 09:48 AM

I would definitely take 45 points from Gilroy.

45 points would be a Zunov-like rookie season and would mean Gilroy will be a first pairing D, maybe even an All-Star. I would be satisfied if he got 30 points.

Which would have lead the Rangers in D scoring last year.

That's true. Hopefully he has as good a season as we suspect he will.

Being back home, playing well, could persuade him to sign long term.

Although, he will command a steep contract. I really wish we signed him longer then one year.

The 45 point prediction for Gilroy is lunacy

30 is possible though if he gets a lot of PP time

Oh yeah, I totally agree. The THN prediction is absurd. Again.

The inclusion of Baranka as a top-10 prospect is likewise absurd.

no way Gilroy tops even 30 points. If he plays a good amount of games...he'll be good for 20 - 25 points. That is respectable for a rookie offensive-defensemen.

Gilroy will get 30 points. People talked about him being in Calder consideration before the NCAA finals, now he won't get 30 points?

He has to make the team first off. Winning the Hobey Baker doesn't mean he's a sure-thing right off the bat. He could very well end up in Hartford for all we know. Don't get me wrong...I'm a fan of his. I saw him play twice last year here in Vermont, and he was fantastic. Great skater, and has great vision. He made some sick moves manning the point on the PP. How well that translates to the NHL still remains to be seen. I'm pulling for him big time.

DutchShamrock 08-24-2009 12:38 PM

I didn't even realize that Grachev was AHL eligible.

grachev would not take prospals place and he wouldnt take higgins spot.

most likely he'll be battling enver lisin for a spot on the roster

Levitate 08-24-2009 01:02 PM

We were talking about next year

He wasnt drafted from CHL, so he can play in AHL even when he's 19.

They aren't paying him almost 2 mil to play in Hartford. Unless he shows up to camp drunk and tells Torts he's a chicken****er, he'll make the team.
