Jagr Back to the Rangers?

I stumbled across this article yesterday. Not sure what board policy is about sharing links and stuff so I'll just post the majority of it in quotes:

Quote:

When Jaromir Jagr and the New York Rangers parted ways in early July of last year, it wasn't under the greatest of terms; Jagr wanted a multi-year deal to continue to play in New York while Sather would only offer one year. Jagr, who once said that he would like to finish his NHL career as a Ranger, packed his bags and headed over to Russia where he signed a two year/$20 million contract with Omsk Avangard of the Kontinental Hockey League.
A long shot and a crazy idea, but I think it's worth talking about.

Callahan on the fourth line? :(. Enver Lisin fine, let him play the top line in Hartford but Cally....I mean if i could get Jagr for 1 year 2mil....I'd do it in a heartbeat but damn...

Callahan on the 4th line for one season really wouldn't be bad and if Tortorella rolled 4 lines he would get a decent amount of playing time as well as power play/ penalty kill time. And if there are any injuries on the top 6 he steps right up into that.

not a big fan of his lines at all!

The Rangers have close to 8 mil in cap space?

NHL Numbers has us at just over $7.7 million.

Id doo a flip backwards if JJ came back... forget about the "C" on the chest or anything else... just to see 68 back in blue would make my day... one of my fave Rangers all-time... just love JJ!

Banks3rdLineCenter 08-29-2009 12:45 PM

First, who wrote this article?

Second, this team does not have $8 million in cap space.

Third, I recently read an article where Jagr openly stated that he truly doesn't know if he's "good enough" to play in the NHL and that if he does return he doesn't want to be a support player. He still wants to be "the man." I'll try to find a link to that interview.

dont forget though Dubi needs to be signed... question how much of those 7.7 mil would be left to get JJ...

The article states: "The Rangers have just under $8 million in cap space left, with Brandon Dubinsky still needing to be signed and still two holes to fill on defense."

So how much do you think would be left after that?

Mjollnir9* 08-29-2009 12:48 PM

This team as constructed really has no room for Jagr. We cannot keep looking at the past. I love Jagr, he is one of my favorite players, and Rangers ever. However, he is gone. Let's be real, Tortorella and an aging Jagr are not really a great match... and Callahan on the 4th line is exactly why Jagr is not welcome.:shakehead

Yeah, that's cool, I just read the article too quickly. :shakehead ;)

-2 mil for Dubi, 1.75 for Gilroy and 1 mil for the other dman, that leaves... 3.25 million

IF...if this were to happen and I dont think its a shot at all, although id love to see it, I think Prospal is the perfect center to play with Jagr as he is the closest thing Jagr would have had as a playmaking center who he could mesh with since Nylander left. Then Dubi would play with Gaborik and Higgins...

Id try something like this..

Higgins-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Kotalik-Prospal-Jagr
Avery-Drury-Callahan
Brashear-Boyle-Lisin

Fitzy 08-29-2009 12:51 PM

Of course, there are a few problems;

1. Jagr isnt coming back to play on the third line

2. Jagr has a year left on his Russian contract

3. If Jagr didnt accept the one year 6 mil offer we gave him last summer, why would he take 1 year for 2-4 mil this summer?

Those lines are alright, but Kotalik was brought in for the sole purpose of playing with Drury.

Anisimov is our 3rd line center... Management has already stated so.

Quote:

“I would say that he’s got a position on the team that’s his to lose,” Rangers Director, Player Personnel Gordie Clark told NHL.com. “He’s not coming in to try out … we have our top three centers — (Chris) Drury, (Brandon) Dubinsky and Anisimov.”

I realize that, but I think Kotalik would mesh with Jagr and Prospal and I think that third line with Avery-Drury-Cally would be an incredible third scoring line/ go up against other teams top line kind of thing...

Mjollnir9* 08-29-2009 12:55 PM

...I really do not see him accepting a diminished role, or anything less than 4 mil per. I know we are all going crazy waiting for the season to start, but we cannot look to the past for future solutions. Also, to bail on his contract with KHL does not seem likely. That is a ton of money for a short season. Hmmmm, the fact that we have a little cap space both intrigues, and frightens me. We all know Sather cannot not spend money.

For one more year of Jagr, Id deal with Anisimov getting another year in Hartford and also be the 1st option for injury, etc.

To get Jagr we would have to wait till next year. Which I think will be worth getting him on a 1 year contract. However, the salary cap will have to go up. If that damn salary cap stays the same I don't know how they can pay Jagr and Staal and Girardi.
Even if you trade Roszival because your rookies played well you still might come up short. You need the salary cap to jump then it would be a different story.

With another year left on his contract I don't know why we're even discussing this. That being said, I really doubt that he'd come back because (unlike chelios) he knows when his body isn't up to the task anymore.

With 7.7 left in cap space I expect that we'll sign dubi and a FA dman and then leave the rest untouched rather than blow it on an ailing jagr. One or two years of a past-prime jagr has got to be worth less than ensuring that we have the cap room to keep staal here for a very long time.
