Dickson Co. Schools Closing October 19

For those that aren't familiar with my home county's budgetary battles, this should get you up to speed. Basically, the county is trying to strong-arm the school system into coughing up money from its rainy day fund so they can fill a $2.8M budget shortfall. If they don't pass the budget by 10/1, the state revokes the school system's funding, and they'll only have enough money to run the schools until 10/19. The alternative is raising property taxes for the second year in a row (maybe longer, I don't know).

I have to say, I find it really disheartening that the county has seen fit to screw up their budget despite significant property tax hikes and is now trying to force the schools to cough up the money to help them cover their shortfall.

Why should the school system have to cover the shortfall, especially if the school system has built in and properly saved for a 'rainy day' fund while the county didn't or wasn't able to do so?

This statement could start a huge political debate. Its all about the mindset.

I'm not looking to start a political debate, and I'd be woefully uninformed for several reasons, one of which is I've not lived in the USA since 2006.

That is... impressively depressing, how far they're willing to go to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Perhaps the schools can pay it on the condition that the school officials who were sensible enough to run their finances in a sane manner get put in charge of county budgeting from now on? ;)
(yeah, yeah, wishful thinking. :( )

That's right, those socialist institutions should be shut down so they can't rob me of my tax money :sarcasm:

A big reason we decided to live in Williamson County was the schools. They're excellent, and make it worth the added cost of living. One of those things you don't appreciate until you're in a different situation.

jstreet 09-23-2009 12:19 PM

so what are all those kids supposed to do?

Not really sure, but they're freaking out about this.

It was always my personal dream to find a way to not have to go to school, so I guess I'm somewhat envious. I've got a parent working in the school system, though, so she'll be out of a job.

Same with us and Rutherford County (which won best in State).

–as long as one participates in an honors or AP program...

If not, I recommend dual enrolling during junior and or senior years.

I was a Cougar as well, and my mother works at Oakmont Elementary.

The County Commission did not pass a budget tonight. The state pulls their funding of all county projects tomorrow.

Suck it I guess. The teachers and staff are screwed. The students can go to another school.

The nearest schools are almost an hour away in McEwen, and I don't think they're equipped for that many extra students.

The faculty are lining up jobs elsewhere or have money saved up to weather the proverbial storm. Not sure what the teachers are doing.

This is Dickson County we're talking about here ... They've got 2 Private Schools in all of Dickson County, one is an all boys school (Bilandy Academy) and the other is United Christian Academy ... Home Schooling may be the only option ... ouch indeed
