Franson called up...10-16-09

Who is going to the bench?

And why not Sulzer?

I haven't followed Sulzer enough to answer that question.

Going to the bench will almost assuredly be Klein.

I could see several possibilities regarding pairings:

Suter/Weber
Hamhuis/Franson
Bouillon/Laakso

Suter/Weber
Hamhuis/Bouillon
Franson/Laakso

Suter/Weber
Hamhuis/Laakso
Bouillon/Franson

The first option allows the first two pairings to operate the two power play units respectively (assuming Suter rejoins Weber on the first unit again).

The second option puts the most inexperienced defensemen together in an effort to hide both and limit their minutes. This is probably unlikely for an entire game.

The last option let's Laakso move up to Hamhuis since he has more NHL experience and is a little better defensively than Franson.

Both the first and third options I've presented could certainly morph into the second option as a game wears on. This is exactly what happened in the first couple of games. Bouillon moved up to play with Hamhuis while Klein, and especially Laakso, saw much less time on the ice.

Klein on his way to a well-deserved seat in the press box...

TMI 10-16-2009 12:24 PM

Let's just hope Franson doesn't make Klein look like Weber...

Panopticon 10-16-2009 12:51 PM

Wow, the rumors were true. I hope you guys are right that it's Klein who sits. He'd deserve it. I can't believe they called up Franson instead of Sulzer, though. They really must've been disappointed at Sulzer during camp. Maybe they're hoping that Franson will help the 2nd PP unit...

I'd like to see Hamhuis-Laakso, Bouillon-Franson on ES, then Hamhuis and Franson on the PP.

What I've seen of Franson, this is entirely possible. The key is to play Franson the right amount in the right situations and against the right players and you can make him look good even.

EDIT: Any chance that they'll go with 7 d-men? Rotate Laakso and Franson on ES, and give Franson some PP chances?

They really need to think hard about splitting up Weber - Suter ... the other kids need some much needed help, and it probably wouldn't hurt putting Suter with Franson & Shea with Laakso ... just saying

I wouldn't be against this at all. In fact I'd like to see them try it for a game or two. I just don't think it will happen.

No, Trotz will not dress 7 defensemen. Not the time to go really nontraditional with the lineup. The team showed life last night, gives them something to work with...

jstreet 10-16-2009 03:46 PM

good, Klein doesnt deserve to sniff the ice right now

Enoch 10-16-2009 05:21 PM

Good. I like this decision, and i am interested to see how Franson does in NHL competition....fighting for a roster spot....

If he drops his gloves again, he better not let up until the linesmen come in. It was painful to watch him allow Kulda to get up twice and then give up and put his face out there to get popped...:sarcasm:

... but I guess he can't be much worse than Klein... can he?

No, Klein has lowered that bar so low lately...I don't think it'd be possible to play much worse...

Hamhuis INJURED...

Quote:

But now comes word that the Preds will be without defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who suffered an upper-body injury Thursday and will be sidelined against the Capitals.

It’s not immediately clear how long Hamhuis will be sidelined for, but his injury is the reason defenseman Cody Franson was recalled from Milwaukee on Friday. Franson and the Admirals had just arrived in British Columbia when Nashville gave him the news Thursday night, so Franson spent Friday traveling all the way across the continent and was schedule to arrive in D.C. late Friday night.

Ewww, well our 2nd pair BETTER be Laakso and Boullion while they are not playing great they are better than Klein.

token grinder 10-17-2009 12:08 AM

can suter and weber play all 60 minutes?

the backstrom line is gonna have a field day since they have last change

Panopticon 10-17-2009 02:49 AM

Oh ****. Now they have to split up Suter and Weber. If the Caps roll their lines like they did last game (AO on a different line than Backstrom and Semin), just playing Suter and Weber a lot won't do much good. And they can't pair Klein with either rookie or the rookies with each other. Or at least I really really hope they won't.

I have a bad feeling about this, indeed...

OpenWheel 10-17-2009 03:00 AM

For a team that has been talked about for several years about being loaded with top end defensive prospects, we sure seem weak on the back end. :( I can only hope the prospects hurry up and develop...

Although pre-season I said I didn't even want to bring in a vet, I wanted a total youth movement, both forwards and defense. So watch out what I wish for I guess. I didn't know Sulzer wasn't good enough yet to stick, or that Klein wasn't going to improve.

TMI 10-17-2009 03:25 AM

I grabbed my keyboard fully prepared to say something insightful about our team defense, and then I remembered it was just one game out of the last four... not to mention those games included only two goals and we lost all four.

If we're disciplined we can contain them, but we probably still lose (though possibly respectively) due to the complete lack of offense. If we can't be disciplined we are going to get schooled, and will likely face another 5-6 goal loss...

Can this get any worse? The only thing that could be worse is Rads comes back and gives Arnott a bear hug into the boards.

dulzhok 10-17-2009 01:36 PM

Injuries were bound to happen... Something that Poile has failed to grasp for the history of this franchise.

It's not bad luck, it's something that every team has to deal with. Some are prepared, some aren't.
