Now with Gonchar out of the picture for awhile...

Do you think they will go after a PMD (puck moving defensemen) to help keep their winning ways alive?

Toronto could offer Tomas Kaberle. Yes he does have a NTC, but he has looked frustrated this year and may be convinced to waive his NTC (most likely by Nonis)

What kind of deal could Pittsburgh offer Toronto if they were infact interested?

Thoughts?

Cheers

With Goligoski and Letang, the Penguins are quite able to handle the loss of Gonchar for the 4 to 6 weeks; especially with Skoula as the most likely replacement.

Trxjw 10-21-2009 12:55 PM

Goligoski and Letang are more than capable of running the points. I don't think they'll be looking for any outside help.

shureshot66 10-21-2009 12:56 PM

extremely doubtful. gonchar's out until basically thanksgiving (probably a bit longer), and they're going to make a deal for a guy of kaberle's stature? what are they supposed to do salary cap-wise when gonchar comes back?

letang and goligoski are still there. obviously the team will suffer in gonchar's absence, but trading for kaberle makes zero sense.

Psycho Papa Joe 10-21-2009 12:56 PM

Unless he's out for the year and playoffs, the Pens really don't have enough insentive to overpay for Kaberle, which is what would end up happening. They have internal depth that should allow them to whether the storm, as long as Gonchar is healthy for the playoffs. Like others have said, this is a month or two at most so no need for Kaberle.

robr00 10-21-2009 01:01 PM

Hypothetically, of course,
How about something like:

To Pens:
Kaberle

To Leafs:
1st
2nd
Tangradi or Goligoski

Even hypothetically, the Penguins wouldn't do this.

Hypothetically no.

Contract wise and with the pens cap situation. I wouldnt trade goligoski for kaberle straight up.

1st and 2nd rounders are practically 2nds and 3rds considering the penguins look like they could easily finish 1st overall and possibly repeat.

So really... you have a 2nd + 3rd + solid prospect for a legit #1 PMD. Thats fair value, IMO.

Modo 10-21-2009 01:07 PM

Pens have no need for Kaberle.

At all.

The Pens have a legit #1 PMD and in 4-6 weeks they can have him back for nothing.

Value...fine maybe...but it would be a retarded trade for the Pens to make in the real world.

i think many many many real NHL GMs would agree with you.

take out the Pens cap and add any cap. Kabs is a solid player with a decent contract, but what GM would move a prospect with the promise of Gogs for kaberle?

if it was last year and Gog's had yet to see NHL duty yet, yes. but not now that he is fitting right in fine.

SomeDude 10-21-2009 01:20 PM

It was only a matter of time before these kind of threads started popping up.

If the Pens didn't trade for defensive help when Gonch and Whitney were out for a significant amount of time last year, they sure as heck aren't going to now. We'll be fine for a month or so while he heals, and if the team falls apart without him, it just makes Shero's decision on re-signing him that much easier.

TheBrokenRib 10-21-2009 01:22 PM

Pens won't be trading any assets away for a patch player on the back end. They played without Gonchar before. They will be fine.

Big McLargehuge 10-21-2009 01:35 PM

He's only out 4-6 weeks early in the season and we have two guys far above average PMDs as it is and Martin 'never played less than 78 games in a season before this year' Skoula is our 7th defender.

Looking outside for help is highly unlikely. If Gonchar was out for the season, then maybe, but even then I'd doubt it.

leafsfan2 10-21-2009 01:39 PM

First , Penguins do not need Kaberle and second of all Leafs can't afford to trade Kaberle, dumb idea.

danishh 10-21-2009 01:51 PM

they need someone with more puck poise than kaberle to replace gonchar.

IMO. Leafs need to trade Kaberle to do this rebuild properly. He could bring back the most quality assets in a deal.

Kaberle has more puck poise than Gonchar.

If i asked my Pens fan buddy that question, I think hed be rolling on the ground laughing at me.

GKJ 10-21-2009 02:22 PM

Gonchar is out 4-6 weeks. Not 4-6 years.

Naaah, Burke would likely just go out and deal 'em as soon as he got 'em anyway.

NYR94 10-21-2009 02:49 PM

Not every injury needs to be remedied by a trade. Gonchar will be back. Letang and Goligoski are more than capable.

InCoggNito 10-21-2009 02:57 PM

The Pens Are going to be just fine. They have a great defense even without Gonchar. They have skoula ready to go and Letang and Goose can handle themselves very well for 4-6 weeks.
