GAME PREIVEW
Season Series: This is the second of six meetings between L.A. and Phoenix this season. The Coyotes won the season-opener for both teams, 6-3 in L.A. on Oct. 3, thanks to a pair of goals from Radim Vrbata, including the game-winner.

Big Story: Expectations for each team grow by the day, or rather by the win, which makes this one of the more intriguing matchups of a full Saturday slate. The Kings salvaged six of 12 possible points on their recent six-game road trip and then came home Thursday night to beat Dallas, 5-4 in overtime, helped by Anze Kopitar's first career hat trick. The Coyotes have won four in a row, including two in OT and one in a shootout, to rise to the top of the Pacific Division.

Team Scope
Kings: Even with the controversy surrounding the recent benching of Alexander Frolov, there are good vibes around this team and a sincere belief that they are a serious contender. However, they are having some minor issues with their goaltending that must be solved. Jonathan Quick, recently tabbed the clear-cut No. 1 by coach Terry Murray, gave up four goals on 21 shots to Dallas on Thursday. He's given up 12 goals in his last four games. With a back-to-back this weekend, we could see both Quick and Erik Ersberg.

Coyotes: No goaltending worries here. Ilya Bryzgalov has been the one of, if not the NHL's best netminder so far this season. Among No. 1 goalies entering Friday's action, he was first in goals-against average (1.26), save percentage (.946) and shutouts (2). His six wins have him tied for second with four others. And it's not as if Bryzgalov is beating slouches either. He's allowed a combined eight goals in wins over L.A., Pittsburgh, San Jose, St. Louis, Boston and Detroit. He gave up only one goal in a loss to Columbus.

Who's Hot: Kopitar is sizzling in Hollywood with six points in the last three games to give him 16 for the season, putting him high up on the NHL leaderboard. Ryan Smyth has continued his torrid start with five more points in the last three games to give him 14 for the season. Dustin Brown has six points in the last four games. … There's arguably nobody in the NHL playing his position better than Bryzgalov right now. Shane Doan reversed his cold start by picking up five points in the last three games, including three assists in the win over Boston last week. Adrian Aucoin has four points in the last three games, including a goal and an assist in Thursday's win over Detroit. Matthew Lombardi has a point in each of the last three games.

Stat Pack: Kopitar and Smyth have recorded at least one point in nine of the Kings' 10 games this season. … The last time the Coyotes won six of their first eight games was 2000-01. The franchise, dating back to its days in Winnipeg, has done it only one other time (1982-83). … Through 10 games last season the Kings were 3-6-1. … Frolov had two assists Thursday night after being scratched by coach Terry Murray in the game before.

Puck Drop: "We've got a long way to go," Doan said. "It's important for us to have a good start to give the fans something to talk about."

NHL GAMES TODAY

Hey great GDT! Thanks for putting it up. Games against Coyotes make me more nervous than any other team. Too bad they didn't start JLB. I've been dying to see a game with him against us. Oh well.

In regards to the goaltending, I was thinking about this the other day. We really didn't get to see Quick until the middle of the season. Maybe he's a bit of a slow starter. I'm sure he'll rip it up as the season goes on. Seems like he just needs to simplify things and believe in himself. Never seems to have a problem taking responsibility so that's good.

Here's to a win tonight!

Reaper45 10-24-2009 02:13 PM

You have the 2nd line listed as the 3rd. Other than that, great job.

KopitarFAN 10-24-2009 02:14 PM

Kings lead 3-0 after 2, only to lose 4-3 in OT.

We win tonight if we play an angry, physical game, with fights, face washes, and general hostility. The Coyotes are a soft, skating team that has won with great goaltending by Ilya (yeah...remember, when Dean decided not to pick him up from waivers? Grrrrrrr). Get in Ilya's face, force the Coyotes to play our game and we kick the crap out of them tonight.

northernKing 10-24-2009 02:31 PM

HUGE GAME! We need to win because it seems we only beat PHX when nothings on the line but draft positions!

I don't think any of us (including me) ever got that story completely right. From my understanding, the Coyotes, at the time, were lower than us in the standings and had first dibs on waiver pickups. They claimed Ilya before Dean ever had a chance.

Maybe I'm wrong.

riznat 10-24-2009 03:31 PM

Looking forward to seeing Parse for the first time.

Not looking forward to playing the yoterboats :(

Kopi, do your thing! Quick - get back to form.

Simmonds - Knock someone out :yo:

Oh and Drewiske, I love you but please no hooking/holding penalties tonight. Seem to be getting into a bad habit of taking those the last few games.

The Kings were pretty far down the waiver order at the time Bryz was waived, somewhere between 10 and 12. For all we know they probably put in a claim.

Order at the time was:
Washington
Buffalo
Edmonton
Phoenix
Florida

Pregame action:

Quote:

As the Los Angeles Kings look over the faces on the Phoenix Coyotes’ bench, they will see two things. First they will see the Western Conference’s second best team. This will be but a fleeting image.
The lasting picture in their minds will be a much harsher one, the visage of humiliation.
The Kings lost their season opener to the Coyotes in a performance so awful, one would have thought TWA had been resurrected to sponsor the game.
The rest of the story at :http://lakingsnews.com/2009/10/24/pr...ge-on-coyotes/

I just hope the Kings don't try and match the Coyote's speed game. They have to play their game and not get caught up trying to play the Yotes game.

JPFT 10-24-2009 04:03 PM

Do you guys put your clock back an hour as well?

GO KINGS GO!!!!

You're wrong, purely out of principal.

Also, Burke was offering a 2nd rounder for him and I am almost certain Dean turned it down.

Huge game for Quick.

Absolutely...his lauded resilience will be put to the test in the wake of that atrocious 3rd period against the Stars.

This will also be a big game for the Kings in general, provided they go into the final frame with a lead. What happened on Thursday has happened in almost every one of the Kings' wins so far this season and I hope they'll be motivated to prove they can competently close out a game after coming so close to having their last W snatched away.

At the same time, every other GM in the league turned him down as well.

Ollie Weeks 10-24-2009 06:26 PM

Opening night just plain sucked. Phoenix curse be damned, we`ve got this one.

But did Burke offer the Ilya to the kings for a second?

I honestly believe that one of the main reason Ilya was waived was to keep him from ending up in LA.
